Broad-based risk-off session. Every major index fell more than 1.5%, the Dow led losses at -2.19%, and the VIX pushed back above 20 for the first time in weeks. The damage concentrated in the speculative end of the market: AI infrastructure, small modular nuclear, and fintech names dropped 7–14%, while gold (+2.1%) and crude (+2.5%) rallied.

Breaking News & Macro Events

Fed Holds at 3.50%–3.75% With Three Hawkish Dissents — CNBC

The FOMC concluded its July 28–29 meeting by holding the target range steady on a 9–3 vote, with the Cleveland, Minneapolis, and Dallas presidents dissenting in favor of a hike. Chair Kevin Warsh paired the hold with a sharply higher inflation projection, lifting the PCE forecast to 3.6% from 2.7%. The combination — no move, but a materially worse inflation outlook and visible internal pressure to tighten — was read as the Fed acknowledging it may be behind the curve. Equities sold off through the afternoon and the 10-year drifted higher to 4.62%.

Oil Rallies on Renewed US–Iran Tensions — ChemAnalyst

WTI gained 2.5% to $84.76 and Brent 3.3% to $90.73 as US–Iran military tensions reignited and Strait of Hormuz shipping risk returned to the tape. Roughly 20% of seaborne oil transits the Strait, so even headline risk carries an outsized inflation premium — an unhelpful development on the same day the Fed raised its own inflation forecast.

Japan Earthquake Halts Chip Equipment Production — TradingKey

A 7.1-magnitude quake in Japan on July 28 forced the evacuation of TSMC’s Kyushu facility, and Tokyo Electron halted plant operations on July 29 for safety inspections. Renesas also suspended its Kumamoto operations. With Tokyo Electron a critical node in the global lithography and etch supply chain, the outage compounded an already-weak semiconductor tape. TSM fell 5.1%.

Trump Announces Tariffs on 60+ Trading Partners — Daily Caller

Temporary 10% duties were replaced with 10–12.5% rates covering more than 60 countries including China, Canada, Mexico, the EU, India, and the UK, effective late July. Estimated household cost is roughly $900 annually. The timing layers a fresh goods-price impulse onto the Fed’s revised inflation path.

Watchlist

Dividend Stocks

  • 52W Range: $844.06 — $1,096.50
  • News: Costco heads into Q4 with valuation in focus — Q3 net sales rose 11.6% YoY to $69.15B; Kirkland Signature momentum and executive membership growth support sentiment. One of only a handful of green names on the day.

NKE — Nike Inc. ($43.22, +0.56%)

  • Earnings: 2026-09-29 (62 days away) — est. EPS $0.45 on $11.4B revenue
  • Ex-Dividend: 2026-05-31 (passed) | Yield: 3.81%
  • 52W Range: $40.00 — $80.17
  • News: Down roughly 31% year to date with Greater China revenue off 17% and Nike Direct off 9%. Management guides to low-to-mid single-digit declines for the next three quarters. Sell-side average target sits near $51 — a wide gap between price and consensus that reflects genuine disagreement on the China turnaround, not conviction.

PFE — Pfizer Inc. ($25.15, -0.32%)

  • Earnings: 2026-08-04 (6 days away) ⚠️ — est. EPS $0.68 on $14.4B revenue
  • Ex-Dividend: 2026-07-23 (passed) | Payable 2026-08-31 | Yield: 6.81%
  • 52W Range: $23.11 — $28.75
  • News: Pfizer’s 7% dividend under cash-flow scrutiny ahead of earnings — consensus EPS of $0.68 is down from $0.78 a year ago. Full-year guidance is $59.5–62.5B revenue and $2.80–3.00 EPS, with no buybacks planned. The FDA granted priority review to Talzenna+Xtandi. A 6.8% yield with declining earnings is the entire debate in one line.

UPS — United Parcel Service ($104.56, -1.52%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-27 (90 days away) — est. EPS $1.73 on $22.1B revenue

  • News: Q2 beat with raised full-year outlook — EPS of $1.76 topped $1.67 estimates and revenue of $22.83B beat $21.86B. Management says the restructuring is bearing fruit and the company is through the worst of its operational disruption.

Growth Stocks

AAPL — Apple Inc. ($338.19, -0.90%)

  • Earnings: 2026-07-30 (1 day away) ⚠️ — est. EPS $1.89 on $109.0B revenue
  • 52W Range: $201.50 — $342.89 (within 1.4% of 52W high) ⚠️
  • News: Apple crosses $5 trillion market cap — the milestone landed July 28, but the more consequential story is a storage chip shortage that has driven $100–$1,000+ price increases across iPads and Macs. Apple reports tomorrow, and it held up better than almost anything else in tech today.

AMZN — Amazon.com Inc. ($226.65, -2.32%)

  • Earnings: 2026-07-30 (1 day away) ⚠️ — est. EPS $1.82 on $196.4B revenue
  • 52W Range: $196.00 — $278.56
  • News: Flat into the Q2 print with AWS growth at a 15-quarter high — AWS grew 28% last quarter and the AI chip business now runs at roughly $20B annually. The offset: 2026 capex guidance raised to $200B, which is exactly the kind of number the market punished today.

CRCL — Circle ($61.36, -4.36%) ⚠️

GOOG — Alphabet Inc. ($335.76, +0.26%)

HIMS — Hims & Hers Health ($25.00, -14.39%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-08-10 (12 days away) ⚠️ — est. EPS $0.11 on $730.1M revenue
  • 52W Range: $13.74 — $70.43
  • News: FTC, Utah, and California sued Hims & Hers over data privacy, alleging it improperly shared health data with Meta and Snap and made subscriptions unreasonably hard to cancel. The company denies the allegations after what it describes as a three-year investigation. Worst single-day move on the watchlist.

INTC — Intel Corporation ($81.88, -6.47%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-10-22 (85 days away) — est. EPS $0.39 on $16.4B revenue
  • 52W Range: $18.97 — $142.35
  • News: Chip rout and tariff fears hit Intel — Q2 revenue of $16.1B rose 25% YoY and beat guidance, with Q3 guided to $16.3B, yet the stock has given back more than 40% from its $142 high. Weak Samsung results dragged the whole sector.

META — Meta Platforms ($585.61, -1.97%)

  • Earnings: 2026-07-29 (today, after close) ⚠️ — est. EPS $7.40 on $60.3B revenue
  • 52W Range: $520.26 — $796.25
  • News: Reports Q2 today alongside paid Meta AI tiers at $7.99 and $19.99 per month, plus reported talks to lease $10B of compute to Anthropic over two years. 2026 capex guidance sits at $125–145B. Down roughly 26% from its 52-week high.

MSTR — Strategy ($93.33, -3.63%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-07-30 (1 day away) ⚠️ — est. revenue $124.5M
  • 52W Range: $81.81 — $414.36
  • News: Strategy sold 5.4M shares for $544.5M during July 20–26 per an SEC filing, its fifth consecutive week without bitcoin purchases, lifting USD reserves to $3.75B. The company holds 843,775 BTC and expects an $8.32B digital asset impairment in tomorrow’s Q2 report. Down roughly 77% from its 52-week high.

NNE — Nano Nuclear Energy ($14.88, -7.29%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-08-12 (14 days away) ⚠️ — est. EPS -$0.24
  • 52W Range: $15.20 — $60.87 (new 52-week low) ⚠️
  • News: Selected by AFWERX for an SBIR Phase I contract on July 27, with the KRONOS MMR program in formal NRC review. Good news, no price response — the entire small-nuclear complex was liquidated today regardless of company-specific developments.

NVDA — NVIDIA Corporation ($190.01, -3.86%) ⚠️

OKLO — Oklo Inc. ($36.84, -7.76%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-08-07 (9 days away) ⚠️ — est. EPS -$0.18
  • 52W Range: $37.80 — $193.84 (new 52-week low) ⚠️
  • News: DOE approved the Groves Reactor Documented Safety Analysis, advancing Oklo to its final pre-startup phase, and the company joined a $200M federal nuclear initiative. The stock is down roughly 41% YTD and 56% over six months. A genuine regulatory milestone bought it nothing today.

RKLB — Rocket Lab USA ($58.60, -8.01%) ⚠️

SMCI — Super Micro Computer ($25.70, -9.95%) ⚠️

SMR — NuScale Power ($7.59, -8.00%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-08-05 (7 days away) ⚠️ — est. EPS -$0.13 on $11.9M revenue
  • 52W Range: $7.21 — $57.42 (within ~5% of 52W low) ⚠️
  • News: Down roughly 85% with revenue collapsing from $8M to $0.6M quarterly. The Fluor exit and a $507.4M ENTRA1 payment are the acute headwinds; the absence of firm commercial contracts is the structural one. Q2 lands August 5.

SOFI — SoFi Technologies ($15.25, -8.96%) ⚠️

TEM — Tempus AI ($41.55, -3.37%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-07-30 (1 day away) ⚠️ — est. EPS -$0.15 on $379.5M revenue
  • 52W Range: $40.77 — $104.32 (within 1.9% of 52W low) ⚠️
  • News: Agreed to acquire the remaining 87.85% of Personalis for $1.6B at $16.25 per share — a 28% premium to the 30-day VWAP, structured as stock with a cash option. A large all-stock deal announced with the shares near a 52-week low is an expensive way to buy growth.

TSM — Taiwan Semiconductor ($374.67, -5.08%) ⚠️

UNH — UnitedHealth Group ($420.57, -1.15%)

LUNA (Luna Innovations) returned no price data again today — the listing status remains unresolved and the ticker should be reviewed for removal from the watchlist.

Gold and oil up, dollar down, yields marginally higher. That is a stagflation-flavored combination, not a growth-scare one — worth distinguishing, because the two call for very different positioning.

Notable Voices

Markets underestimate risks, “close to as good as it gets” — Jamie Dimon, CNBC (2026-07-21)

Dimon said he would “absolutely not” buy equities or long-dated Treasurys at current prices, describing the risk set as “tectonic” and larger than consensus allows. He cited Ukraine, China tensions, and military spending against a deficit backdrop.

AI circular financing echoes the dot-com bubble — Jim Cramer, CNBC (2026-07-27)

Cramer warned that AI capital flows increasingly resemble dot-com-era circularity and told leveraged holders of data-center exposure to exit. Two days later, NVIDIA’s reported $250B OpenAI backstop talks and SMCI’s -10% session made the point for him.

S&P 500 could reach 8,800 — after a 10–20% drawdown — Tom Lee, Fundstrat (2026-07-06)

Lee holds a year-end target of 8,400–8,800 but expects bear-market-like moves in the second half, driven partly by the Fed testing its inflation framework. He notes only 23% of fund managers are beating large-cap growth, a five-year low.

A “critical reckoning” is coming; AI model valuations are a “mathematical mistake” — Chamath Palihapitiya, CNBC (2026-07-14)

Palihapitiya argues there is no evidence AI has lifted corporate margins and that value accrues to infrastructure and application layers rather than model companies. He expects a reckoning in how the market prices that distinction.

Hard to find value; will only deploy on a big decline — Warren Buffett, TheStreet (2026-07-15)

Buffett says current volatility is “nothing” compared to the 50%+ declines he has deployed into historically, and that Berkshire’s record $397.4B cash pile will stay put through mild corrections. A -1.5% day does not qualify.

Valuations are high but “not crazy”; dispersion rewards selectivity — Howard Marks, Oaktree Capital (2026-07)

Marks frames the current market as elevated but not extreme, with widening dispersion between winners and losers punishing mistakes and creating openings for active selection. Today’s tape — UNH and GOOG green while SMCI dropped 10% — is that dispersion in practice.

Tech has 15% more upside; hyperscalers lead H2 — Dan Ives, Yahoo Finance (2026-07-06)

Ives remains constructive, arguing “we’re in the third inning of this nine-inning game relative to AI” and that hyperscalers outperform in the back half. The most bullish voice in this set, and the one today’s session argued against hardest.

AI deflation supports innovation stocks — Cathie Wood, Fortune (2026-07-08)

Wood expects AI-driven deflation to produce accelerating growth and falling rates — a framework directly at odds with today’s higher inflation projection from the Fed. She has been adding aggressively to SpaceX and holds a 2030 bitcoin base case of $730K.

Buying AI mega-caps despite a decade-flat warning — Stanley Druckenmiller, Yahoo Finance (2026-07-28)

Druckenmiller warned earlier in 2026 that markets could trade flat for a decade, yet recent filings show him adding Amazon, Meta, and Alphabet while cutting TSMC by 8.8%. Selective positioning rather than broad de-risking.

Market Outlook

The Fed held at 3.50%–3.75% but paired the pause with a PCE projection revised up to 3.6% and three dissents pushing for a hike, and the market read that combination as an admission of being behind the curve — the Dow fell 2.19%, the VIX jumped 13.5% to 20.66, and the speculative complex was liquidated wholesale, with SMCI -10%, SOFI -9%, RKLB -8%, SMR -8%, and OKLO -7.8%. What makes this more than a rate tantrum is the corroborating price action elsewhere: gold +2.1%, Brent +3.3% on Strait of Hormuz risk, and a weaker dollar alongside slightly higher yields, which is a stagflationary signature rather than a growth scare, and it arrives just as a fresh 10–12.5% tariff schedule hits 60+ trading partners. Notably, the selling ignored fundamentals entirely — Oklo cleared a DOE safety milestone, Nano Nuclear won an AFWERX contract, and Rocket Lab booked its largest-ever $266M launch award, and all three fell 7–8% anyway, which is the signature of positioning unwinding rather than reassessment. The one clean divergence worth watching is that market breakevens sit at 2.20% while the Fed now projects 3.6% PCE; that gap cannot persist, and whichever side gives way sets the direction for every long-duration asset on this list. Tomorrow brings Apple, Amazon, MicroStrategy, and Tempus reports into a tape with no risk appetite left, and how a strong print gets received will say more about this market than the print itself.
