Breaking News & Macro Events

Microsoft Jumps 15% as Azure Posts Fastest Cloud Growth Since 2022 — Bloomberg

Microsoft closed +15.5% at $451.10 after fiscal Q4 revenue of $90.0 billion (+18%) beat the $87.6B consensus, with Azure growing 43% — the fastest quarterly cloud growth since early 2022 and ahead of the ~40% expected. EPS came in at $4.81, and Microsoft 365 Copilot crossed 30 million paid seats. The read-through was immediate and broad: the semiconductor complex rallied hard, with Intel +11.3%, TSM +7.6%, and SMCI +7.9%. After Wednesday’s AI-trade de-risking, this print told the market the hyperscaler capex cycle is still accelerating, not rolling over.

Fed Holds Rates Steady as Three Officials Dissent in Favor of a Hike — CNBC

The FOMC voted 9–3 to hold the federal funds rate at 3.50%–3.75%, its fifth consecutive hold. All three dissenters — Cleveland’s Beth Hammack, Minneapolis’ Neel Kashkari, and Dallas’ Lorie Logan — wanted a 25bp hike, the first time since September 2016 that three policymakers dissented in the same direction. Chair Kevin Warsh framed it as healthy: he “asked for a good family fight, and I got one.” Markets sold off Wednesday on the hawkish split, then reversed Thursday as earnings took over the narrative. A live September hike is now genuinely on the table.

Meta Slumps as AI Capex Crushes Free Cash Flow — CNBC

Meta fell -7.95% to $539.03, within 4% of its 52-week low. Revenue of $60.8B (+28%) edged past consensus, but EPS of $6.18 badly missed the ~$7.19 estimate, dragged down by a $2.4B legal charge and $1.18B in severance from May’s headcount reduction. The bigger problem: free cash flow collapsed to $784 million as quarterly capex hit $31.1B, and Meta raised its 2026 capex floor to $135–145 billion. Q3 revenue guidance of $61–64B came in light at the midpoint. Wall Street cut price targets across the board. Meta and Microsoft reported within hours of each other and got opposite verdicts — the market is now openly discriminating between AI spend that shows up in revenue and AI spend that doesn’t.

Nuclear Stocks Soar on Holtec SMR Milestone — TipRanks

Holtec International disclosed that the NRC formally accepted its plan to dismantle and clean up the Oyster Creek site, where Holtec intends to build four new small modular reactors totaling 1.36GW. The sector took it as validation of the SMR path to powering AI data centers. NuScale (SMR) +13.3%, Nano Nuclear (NNE) +12.1%, and Oklo (OKLO) +11.5% all led the tape.

Q2 GDP (advance estimate) printed this morning at roughly 1.5%, below the ~1.8% consensus and down from 2.5% prior — a soft number that the market comprehensively ignored in favor of earnings. July CPI lands 2026-08-12, just outside the window and the single most important input to the September hike debate.

The cross-asset move is the strange part of today. Gold up 3.4%, the dollar down 0.8%, and the yen up 2.7% against the dollar — all while the 10-year yield rose four basis points after a hawkish Fed split. Rising yields alongside a falling dollar and surging gold is not the textbook reaction to three hike dissents.

Notable Voices

Software’s comeback could be the blueprint for AI stocks’ next rally — Jim Cramer, CNBC (2026-07-29)

Cramer pointed to software names surging 15–22% after ServiceNow’s results as a template for how quickly AI sentiment can flip. His argument: positive earnings surprises, not macro, drive the next leg. Thursday’s Microsoft-led tape looks like the immediate proof of concept.

“We’re in the 3rd inning of the AI revolution” — Dan Ives, Wedbush via 24/7 Wall St. (2026-07-27)

Ives stayed firmly bullish, claiming NVIDIA demand outpaces supply 12-to-1 and noting the Nasdaq 100 trades at roughly a 10% discount to its ten-year average. He flagged July tech earnings as the catalyst for hyperscalers over the next 6–9 months.

Buffett’s “playing with fire” warning is back — Warren Buffett, via The Motley Fool (2026-07-26)

The Buffett Indicator sits at a record high while Berkshire holds a record ~$397 billion in cash. Buffett’s line — that it’s “tough to find values when everybody is preferring gambling” — is a direct rebuttal to the dip-buying reflex that drove today’s session.

“Close to as good as it gets” — Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan via The Motley Fool (2026-07-25)

Dimon warned that markets are underpricing geopolitical and fiscal risk shifting “like tectonic plates.” He specifically said he would not buy 10-year Treasuries near 4.6% — a level the market revisited today.

AI spending may be hiding the biggest capital allocation mistake in history — Chamath Palihapitiya, via 24/7 Wall St. (2026-07-12)

Chamath argued that only 0–2% of recent S&P 500 earnings growth is genuinely attributable to AI productivity, and that frontier models lack durable advantages as open-source catches up. Older commentary, but Meta’s free cash flow collapse today is close to the scenario he described.

Market Outlook

Markets erased Wednesday’s hawkish-Fed selloff and closed at the highs, with the NASDAQ’s 2.78% gain driven overwhelmingly by Microsoft’s 15.5% surge on 43% Azure growth — the fastest cloud acceleration since 2022. The more instructive signal was the dispersion: Microsoft and Meta reported hours apart and moved in opposite directions by more than 23 percentage points combined, which suggests the market has stopped paying for AI capex indiscriminately and started demanding revenue attached to it. Meta’s free cash flow falling to $784 million against $135–145 billion of guided 2026 spending is the clearest expression yet of that repricing, and it warrants attention across every hyperscaler balance sheet. Meanwhile the cross-asset tape sends a muddier message — gold up 3.4% and the dollar down 0.8% alongside rising yields is not what three hawkish FOMC dissents should produce, and that divergence suggests caution about reading today’s equity strength as a clean risk-on signal. Tonight’s Apple and Amazon reports will test whether the Microsoft read-through extends across megacap tech, and July CPI on August 12 remains the decisive input for a September hike that the Fed’s 9–3 split just made genuinely live.
