Breaking News & Macro Events

Divided Fed holds rates steady as three presidents dissent for a hike — CNBC

The FOMC left the target range at 3.50%–3.75% on July 29 in a 9–3 vote, with Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari and Lorie Logan all dissenting in favor of a quarter-point increase — the first time since September 2016 that three policymakers dissented in the same direction. Chair Kevin Warsh told reporters he “asked for a good family fight and I got one,” pledging action if inflation demands it. The long end reacted immediately: the 30-year yield jumped 12bp to 5.21%, its highest in 19 years. Markets that entered 2026 pricing cuts are now pricing the opposite tail. Treasury yields keep climbing as Fed officials float hikes — CNBC

The 10-year finished Friday at 4.745%, up 8.2bp, extending the post-FOMC backup. Rising crude on Middle East supply risk is adding to the inflation-risk premium embedded in the long end. Equities rallying into higher long-end yields is an uncomfortable combination that usually resolves one way or the other.

Yen surges on suspected Japanese intervention; BOJ holds at 1% — CNBC

USD/JPY collapsed from 163.30 to roughly 158.0, a ~3.3% two-session yen surge, after what market sources describe as yen-buying intervention during New York hours Thursday — Japan’s first such move in three months. The MOF has neither confirmed nor denied it. The yen had touched 163.99 a week earlier, its weakest since November 1986. The BOJ then left policy at 1% on Friday, the highest since September 1995, after June’s 25bp hike. (Reuters instant view)

Oil whipsaws as Iran threatens response to fresh U.S. strikes — CNBC

The U.S. launched a heavy wave of strikes on Iran late Wednesday in retaliation for attempted attacks on U.S. forces; the IRGC has threatened escalation. Crude sold off Thursday on a Saudi proposal for a naval coalition to protect Strait of Hormuz shipping, then recovered Friday with WTI +1.08% to $84.49 and Brent +1.22% to $90.12. This conflict has whipsawed energy markets since February.

Hyperscaler capex guidance reframes the AI trade — Yahoo Finance / Reuters

Microsoft posted its largest single-day gain on record (+15.5% Thursday, to $451.10) on its quarterly print, while Apple fell 7.4% Friday. Across Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and Alphabet, 2026 capex guidance now sums to roughly $720–745 billion. The market is paying up for cloud revenue acceleration and, so far, tolerating the spend that produces it.

100% pharma tariff takes effect; Mexico increase delayed 90 days — Wiley Tariff Tracker

A 100% Section 232 tariff on patented pharmaceutical products and APIs took effect July 31 for listed companies, with a reduced 15% rate for the EU, Japan, Korea, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and the UK. Separately, the planned August 1 increase of Mexico’s reciprocal tariff to 30% was delayed 90 days. Relevant to PFE ahead of Tuesday’s report.

  • News: Nike is restructuring China online distribution, ending sales through Topsports/Pou Sheng in favor of its own channels plus Tmall, JD.com and Douyin from January. China revenue has contracted roughly 30% since 2021. The stock is grinding along its 52-week low with the turnaround still unproven.

PFE — Pfizer Inc. ($25.01, +0.40%)

  • Earnings: 2026-08-04 (4 days away) ⚠️ | Consensus EPS $0.68, revenue $14.4B

  • News: Two things collide Tuesday: a consensus EPS of $0.68 against $0.78 a year ago, and a ~6.8% yield whose cash-flow coverage is under scrutiny. The 100% pharma tariff effective today adds a second variable to guidance.

UPS — United Parcel Service ($104.22, -1.00%)

  • Ex-Dividend: 2026-05-17 (passed) | Yield: 6.23%

Growth Stocks

AAPL — Apple Inc. ($308.91, -7.35%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: Reported 2026-07-30 after the close | Next: 2026-10-29
  • 52W Range: $201.50 — $344.57
  • Results: Record June quarter — revenue $109.4B, +16% YoY, net income $29.8B, diluted EPS $2.02 vs. roughly $1.89 expected. iPhone revenue ~$54.3B (+22%), Mac ~$10.4B (+29%); Services and Greater China came in soft. (MacRumors)
  • News: Analysts split after the beat — the selloff is entirely about the September quarter: guidance of 9–11% revenue growth implies ~$113B against consensus near $115B, alongside lower gross-margin guidance and warnings of worsening supply constraints. Beating the quarter and guiding under it is the one combination this market does not forgive.

AMZN — Amazon.com Inc. ($271.58, +15.32%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: Reported 2026-07-30 after the close | Next: 2026-10-29
  • 52W Range: $196.00 — $278.56 (2.5% below 52W high) ⚠️
  • Results: AWS grows 37%, revenue tops $200B — revenue $200.61B vs. $196.46B consensus, EPS $5.75 ahead of estimates, and AWS revenue of $42.2B, up 37% YoY — its fastest in 18 quarters.
  • News: The single best day on the watchlist and the largest AWS acceleration in four years. Evercore ISI called it “the breakout the stock needed.” The stock closed within 2.5% of its 52-week high.

CRCL — Circle ($62.61, -2.54%)

  • Earnings: 2026-08-05 (5 days away) ⚠️ | Consensus EPS $0.27, revenue $717.3M
  • 52W Range: $49.90 — $189.92
  • News: Shares fall despite New York trust charter — Circle secured an NYDFS limited-purpose trust charter for “Circle New York Trust,” but Bernstein cut its price target 25% to $140 ahead of Wednesday’s print. Down roughly 67% from its 52-week high.

GOOG — Alphabet Inc. ($356.65, +6.88%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: Reported 2026-07-22 | Next: 2026-10-28
  • 52W Range: $188.70 — $404.47
  • News: Friday’s move was not an earnings reaction — Alphabet reported Q2 on July 22 (revenue $119.8B, +24%; Cloud +82% to $24.77B with an $514B backlog) and the stock fell 6.8% the next day on a capex hike to ~$45B. Friday’s gain followed DeepMind’s release of next-generation embodied AI models including Gemini Robotics 2, a Freedom Capital Markets upgrade to a $400 target, and read-across from Amazon’s AWS acceleration. (Pichai’s earnings remarks)

HIMS — Hims & Hers Health ($27.77, +2.70%)

  • Earnings: 2026-08-10 (10 days away) ⚠️ | Consensus EPS $0.11, revenue $719.2M
  • 52W Range: $13.74 — $66.20

  • Executive: Chief Accounting Officer Irene Becklund disclosed on July 13 her intent to resign effective October 9, 2026.

INTC — Intel Corporation ($90.20, -1.02%)

  • Earnings: Reported 2026-07-29 after the close | Next: 2026-10-22
  • 52W Range: $18.97 — $142.35
  • News: Q2 revenue rose 25% YoY to $16.1B — its best growth in over 15 years — with non-GAAP EPS of $0.42 against a $0.22 consensus, prompting target raises to $120 from Roth Capital and Wells Fargo. The stock jumped 11.3% Thursday on the print and gave back 1% Friday. It had fallen roughly 20% over the preceding week on a sector-wide derating, so the beat mostly repaired damage rather than breaking new ground.

LUNA — Luna Innovations ($1.24, last trade 2026-07-30)

  • Earnings: Not scheduled
  • News: Luna has a definitive agreement to be acquired by TJC affiliate Ascend Parent at $1.39/share in cash (~26% premium to its 60-day VWAP), expected to close in H2 2026. The stock trades on the OTC Expert Market and is effectively illiquid — Friday produced no print, and the quote feed flagged it as delisted. Treat this position as a merger-arb stub, not a market exposure.

META — Meta Platforms ($556.71, +3.28%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: Reported 2026-07-29 after the close | Next: 2026-10-28
  • 52W Range: $520.26 — $796.25
  • Results: Q2 2026 results — revenue $60.80B, +28% YoY, ahead of the ~$60.29B consensus, but EPS missed on rising cost and legal expense, and Q3 guidance of $61–64B straddled a Street midpoint near $63.15B.
  • News: The stock fell 8.0% Thursday on the print, then recovered 3.3% Friday as investors refocused on 14% ad-impression growth and 12% higher ad pricing. Still down roughly 30% from its 52-week high — the worst relative position among the mega-caps here.

MSTR — Strategy (MicroStrategy) ($93.28, -4.56%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: Reported 2026-07-30 | Next: 2026-10-29
  • 52W Range: $81.81 — $414.36
  • News: Q2 miss on an $8.3B unrealized bitcoin loss — a GAAP loss of $24.45/share against a consensus near +$3.07, driven entirely by fair-value accounting on the bitcoin treasury; core software revenue grew 6.9% YoY to $122.4M. Michael Saylor cited a $1 trillion AI “capital suction” among five headwinds for bitcoin. Down 77% from its 52-week high and sitting near the low.

NNE — Nano Nuclear Energy ($15.91, -4.62%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-08-12 (12 days away) ⚠️ | Consensus EPS -$0.24
  • 52W Range: $14.71 — $60.87
  • News: No company-specific catalyst surfaced for Friday’s decline; the move tracked a broad nuclear small-cap selloff alongside OKLO and SMR. Earlier in July the company won an AFWERX SBIR Phase I contract for its KRONOS MMR microreactor. Down 74% from its 52-week high.

NVDA — NVIDIA Corporation ($200.75, +2.93%)

  • Earnings: 2026-08-26 (26 days away) | Consensus EPS $2.08, revenue $91.8B
  • 52W Range: $164.07 — $236.54
  • News: No confirmed same-day catalyst; the gain tracked the broad AI complex on hyperscaler capex guidance. Recent items include Japanese industrial firms joining Nvidia’s Physical AI Coalition in late July and reports that China will permit limited H200 purchases by domestic AI firms at well under requested volumes.

OKLO — Oklo Inc. ($38.83, -5.50%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-08-07 (7 days away) ⚠️ | Consensus EPS -$0.18
  • 52W Range: $36.61 — $193.84
  • News: No single confirmed Friday catalyst. The ongoing derating centers on a pending reactor criticality milestone, zero revenue against a stretched valuation, and reported insider selling. The board appointed five internal leaders as executive officers effective July 27. Down 80% from its 52-week high and 6% off the low, with earnings next Friday.

RKLB — Rocket Lab USA ($64.95, +0.42%)

  • Earnings: 2026-08-10 (10 days away) ⚠️ | Consensus EPS -$0.05, revenue $230.9M

  • 52W Range: $19.48 — $59.40
  • News: Continued strength following the July 21 preliminary Q4 update: record fiscal Q4 orders above $60B and gross-margin guidance raised to 15–17% from 8.2–8.4%. The full print lands August 11.

SMR — NuScale Power ($8.42, -2.09%)

  • Earnings: 2026-08-05 (5 days away) ⚠️ | Consensus EPS -$0.13, revenue $11.9M
  • 52W Range: $7.21 — $57.42
  • News: Down roughly 85% from July 2025 highs, with quarterly revenue collapsing from ~$8M to $0.6M in Q1 2026. A shareholder litigation firm is investigating alleged misrepresentation of partner ENTRA1’s capabilities. Wednesday’s call is the next real catalyst.

SOFI — SoFi Technologies ($16.31, -0.97%)

  • Earnings: Reported 2026-07-29 | Next: 2026-10-27
  • 52W Range: $14.88 — $32.73
  • News: Q2 adjusted EPS of $0.12 beat the $0.11 consensus on revenue of ~$1.2B against ~$1.1B expected, with FY26 guidance raised to 32–35% revenue growth and EPS of $0.60. Shares dipped premarket on “sell the news,” rallied ~7% Thursday, and gave a little back Friday.

  • Earnings: Reported 2026-07-30 | Next: 2026-10-29
  • 52W Range: $40.77 — $104.32
  • News: Post-earnings reset — Q2 revenue of $382.5M (+22% YoY) beat and the $0.04 loss was narrower than the $0.14 expected, but growth decelerated versus prior quarters and the guidance raise read as modest.

TSM — Taiwan Semiconductor ($404.25, +0.23%)

  • Earnings: Reported 2026-07-16 | Next: 2026-10-15
  • 52W Range: $223.70 — $479.00
  • News: Down nearly 15% this month despite record AI demand — Q2 net profit rose 77% YoY to a record T$706.6B (~$22B) and FY26 revenue growth guidance was raised to “slightly above 40%.” The stock has fallen through July anyway on the sector-wide derating. Friday was a stabilization, not a reversal.

UNH — UnitedHealth Group ($414.40, -1.68%)

  • Earnings: Reported mid-July 2026 | Next: 2026-10-27
  • 52W Range: $234.60 — $461.62

Notable Voices

Wall Street’s top AI bull says the revolution is only in the third inning — Dan Ives, Wedbush Securities, 24/7 Wall St. (2026-07-28)

Ives reiterated that the AI trade is in its “third inning,” citing Nvidia chip demand outpacing supply 12-to-1 and arguing the industry is roughly 15% through total AI capex. He expects hyperscaler-led mega-caps to outperform in the second half as earnings validate the buildout. This week’s AWS and Cloud prints are the first real test of that claim.

Fundstrat’s Tom Lee expects the choppy stretch to end within days — Tom Lee, Fundstrat, PrimeXBT via CNBC (2026-07-29)

Lee maintains an S&P 500 target of 8,400–8,800 by year-end on falling valuations and strong earnings. He simultaneously warns of a possible 10–20% drawdown between August and October tied to the new Fed chair’s inflation framework and the SpaceX share lockup expiry. Both halves of that call matter given Friday’s yield move.

Large AI model valuations could be a “mathematical mistake” — Chamath Palihapitiya, Benzinga (2026-07-27)

Palihapitiya argued that assigning large terminal value to the model layer is a mistake, since rivals now match published performance within weeks — a commoditization cycle compressed from years to months. He places the durable value in the application layer above and the infrastructure layer below the foundation models, a warning aimed at Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s IPO valuations.

ARK keeps buying Meta through the capex anxiety — Cathie Wood, ARK Invest, The Motley Fool (2026-07-28)

Wood’s funds have been adding Meta (roughly 34,080 shares, ~$18.4M recently) even as hyperscaler names stagnated on payoff-timeline worries around ~$630B of collective 2026 AI capex. It fits her position that AI-bubble fears are overblown and this capex cycle is the most powerful on record.

Sentiment has “turned vicious” as red-hot stocks become nightmares — Jim Cramer, CNBC Mad Money (2026-07-30)

Cramer said psychology is driving the tape more than fundamentals right now. On Friday he called Amazon’s quarter a standout on AWS monetization and attributed Apple’s drop largely to DRAM and memory costs squeezing margins against hyperscaler competition for the same supply.

In 12 words, Dimon issues a warning — Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase, The Motley Fool (2026-07-30)

Dimon repeated that he would not buy the broad market or long-dated Treasurys at current prices, saying risks are “shifting below the surface like tectonic plates” — Ukraine, the Middle East, U.S.-China, rising military spending and widening deficits. He calls the economy “close to as good as it gets,” which is a compliment and a warning in the same sentence.

The wisdom at 80: Howard Marks on AI, uncertainty and thinking differently — Howard Marks, Oaktree Capital, AdvisorAnalyst (2026-07-30)

Marks said he has materially softened his AI-bubble skepticism, calling AI’s trajectory “beyond comprehension.” On cycles, he reads markets as “warm” across most indicators — elevated valuations, strong PMIs, above-target inflation — with credit spreads the lone cautionary signal.

Market Outlook

Friday was a mega-cap earnings tape and very little else: Amazon’s 15.3% surge on 37% AWS growth and Alphabet’s 6.9% gain carried the S&P 500 and NASDAQ higher while the Russell 2000 closed down 0.5% and Apple shed 7.4% on soft September-quarter guidance. That divergence is the story — the market is paying a premium for demonstrated AI revenue acceleration and punishing anyone who guides below it, with roughly $720–745B of combined 2026 hyperscaler capex now the price of admission. Underneath the rally, the macro backdrop turned less friendly: the 10-year rose 8.2bp to 4.745% and the 30-year hit a 19-year high of 5.21% after three Fed presidents dissented in favor of a hike, and the yen’s ~3.3% intervention-driven surge is a reminder that currency stress can force positions to unwind faster than fundamentals change. Equities rallying into a rising long end warrants attention, because one of those two signals is usually wrong. The August 7 payrolls report is the next catalyst that can settle it — a hot print against a committee already carrying three hawkish dissents would make the September 15–16 FOMC considerably more interesting than the market is currently pricing.
