Breaking News & Macro Events
Oil prices climb as doubts grow that the Strait of Hormuz will open soon — UPI
The day’s dominant macro story. Talks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz stalled after Iran hardened its terms — Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is not in direct talks with Washington and reiterated demands that the US lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports and compensate for war damages. WTI settled about 5% higher at $82.16 and Brent at $87.70. With a chokepoint premium now rebuilt into crude, energy costs move back to the center of the inflation conversation two days before CPI.
Senate passes bill granting broad tariff authority — Fortune (2026-08-08)
The Senate approved the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2026 in an 86–11 vote, with House approval expected. The bill grants discretion to impose tariffs of up to 100% on trading partners, working around court rulings that blocked earlier executive orders. A durable legislative basis for tariff policy is a different risk profile than executive action that markets had learned to discount.

Notable Voices
Tech Awakens: Tom Lee Makes His August Call — Tom Lee, Fundstrat (2026-08-09)
Lee sees the S&P 500 reaching 7,900–8,000 by the end of August, pointing to deleveraging, earnings running more than $15 ahead of estimates, cooling inflation expectations, and continued AI momentum. He frames the last 8–10 weeks as base-building, arguing the longer the consolidation the larger the eventual breakout.
Dimon warns on record margin debt and hidden leverage — Jamie Dimon, CNBC (2026-08-06)
Margin debt is at all-time highs, Dimon warns, with additional off-balance-sheet leverage sitting in SPVs and securitizations. He flags underpriced geopolitical and fiscal risk — Ukraine, the Middle East, US–China — and says he would not be a buyer of equities or long-dated Treasurys at current levels, while conceding high leverage does not automatically imply systemic risk.
Druckenmiller’s portfolio skips megacap tech — Stanley Druckenmiller, The Motley Fool (2026-08-08)
The roughly $3B, 65-position book is conspicuously underweight the Magnificent Seven, holding only Amazon. He has been accumulating Sea Limited after a 77% decline, buying ahead of projected 22% EPS growth.
ARK adds to Block, SpaceX, NVIDIA and Circle — Cathie Wood, ARK Invest (2026-08-09)
ARK bought roughly $21M of Block and $2.3M of SpaceX in early August, adding to NVIDIA and Circle. Wood maintains a long-term bitcoin target of $1.25M within five years despite ARKK’s year-to-date underperformance.
Market Outlook
A 5% surge in crude on stalled Strait of Hormuz talks knocked the major indices off Friday’s record close, though the damage was superficial — the S&P 500 gave up just 0.06% and sits 0.5% from its high. What matters more than the magnitude is the composition: gold up 2.45%, the 10-year at 4.70%, the dollar firmer and VIX up 3.76% is a geopolitical risk-premium trade, not a growth scare, and it arrives 48 hours before a July CPI print that now has a fresh energy input to contend with. Beneath the surface the market is drawing sharp lines — TSMC posted record July revenue up 44.7% on AI demand and still closed lower, Intel fell 4% for raising equity into strength, and the speculative nuclear complex was repriced hard, with Oklo down 8.1% and NuScale down 6.5% as analysts cut targets on widening losses and rising cash burn. That combination suggests investors are no longer paying for AI adjacency alone; they are asking which balance sheets actually convert the theme into cash. Wednesday’s CPI and NVIDIA’s August 26 print are the two catalysts that will decide whether this consolidation resolves the way Tom Lee expects or validates Dimon’s warning about leverage, and near-term the Hormuz headline flow warrants closer attention than anything on the earnings calendar.
