| S&P 500 | 7,745.06 | -40.70 | -0.52% |
| NASDAQ | 26,644.91 | -84.25 | -0.32% |

Broad but shallow selling — every major index finished lower, yet the composition was unusual: semiconductors actually led, while the pressure came from energy costs and the long end of the curve. Volatility rose off a low base rather than spiking.

Oil rises and the 30-year yield hits its highest level in decades as US-Iran tensions resurface — Yahoo Finance
A memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran expired Monday, reviving concern that the conflict could reignite. Brent pushed above $90 after President Trump said he did not see the war ending soon, with added focus on potential tolls on the Strait of Hormuz. The 30-year Treasury yield closed at 5.31%, its highest since June 2007, while the 10-year finished at 4.72% — a move driven by debt and supply anxiety rather than a growth scare. Energy-driven inflation risk plus a rising long end is the least comfortable combination for equity multiples.
Nvidia will back up to $105 billion in financing for an OpenAI data center in Ohio — CNBC
Nvidia, OpenAI, and SB Energy announced the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus, an 8-gigawatt Ohio complex that SB Energy will build and own and OpenAI will lease for 20 years. Initial capacity is 4.25 GW with an option for 3.75 GW more; the first 800 MW is targeted for 2028. The site will run exclusively on Nvidia GPUs — as many as 1.5 million chips, which Nvidia framed as roughly $150–200 billion of potential revenue per generation deployed through 2030. It is also another instance of the vendor-financing structures that drew analyst scrutiny last week: Nvidia is guaranteeing the financing for its own end demand.
New 50% Section 338 tariffs on select Canadian goods take effect Wednesday — MLT Aikins
Three proclamations signed July 20 invoke Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, imposing an additional 50% tariff on a range of Canadian imports effective 12:01 a.m. ET on August 19. Coverage centers on motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, and dairy, but extends to cement, plywood, furniture, and clothing. USTR puts exposure near $20 billion, about 5.2% of the $382 billion the US imported from Canada in 2025. The duty applies regardless of CUSMA eligibility and is assessed on entry date, not ship date.

- 52W Range: $38.86 — $80.17 (just 0.6% above its 52-week low) ⚠️
- News: Nike falls to a fresh 52-week low as China weakness overshadows its wholesale rebound — the immediate trigger was rival On Holding’s FY2026 sales guidance of $4.390–4.503B against roughly $4.490B consensus, which rattled the whole athletic-footwear group. Nike is now down more than 51% from its 52-week high.

- Note: Most of today’s decline is mechanical. The $1.64 dividend is about 1.6% of Friday’s close, so the ex-dividend adjustment accounts for roughly two-thirds of the -2.37% move. (dividend detail)

- 52W Range: $49.90 — $159.47 (53.2% below high)
- News: Shares climbed on renewed optimism about stablecoin-sector growth and Circle’s position as a primary beneficiary. Still less than half its 52-week high.
GOOG — Alphabet Inc. ($341.45, -0.61%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-28 (72 days away) | Est. EPS $3.00 on $127.0B revenue

$66B) and American Express ($51.3B). About 60% of the added shares came via a $10B private placement directly from Alphabet in June.
HIMS — Hims & Hers Health ($28.61, +1.63%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-09 (84 days away) | Est. EPS $0.09 on $730.1M revenue
- 52W Range: $13.74 — $65.30 (56.2% below high)
INTC — Intel Corporation ($103.49, +0.97%)

- 52W Range: $22.78 — $142.35 (27.3% below high)
- News: Intel upsized its common stock offering to $20 billion at $95 per share on August 10, raising the deal from $15B after the order book reportedly drew about $100 billion in demand. Net proceeds were roughly $19.7B for general corporate purposes including capex. The stock now trades above the offering price.

- Earnings: not scheduled
- 52W Range: $0.62 — $1.75
- News: Luna agreed on June 26 to be acquired by Ascend Parent, LLC, an affiliate of TJC, L.P., for $1.39/share in cash. The deal is expected to close in H2 2026 subject to stockholder and antitrust clearance. The stock trades on the OTC Expert Market and did not print a bar today — its last quote is Friday’s, and the ~6% discount to the deal price is ordinary merger-arb spread rather than news.
META — Meta Platforms ($568.97, -3.54%) ⚠️
- Earnings: 2026-10-28 (72 days away) | Est. EPS $6.97 on $63.3B revenue
- 52W Range: $520.26 — $790.80 (28.1% below high)
- News: Shares fell as a unified case brought by attorneys general from 29 states moved toward oral arguments, alleging Meta illegally collected children’s data and built features designed to encourage addictive behavior in minors. Meta has said potential damages could reach $1.4 trillion; the states have cited roughly $200 billion as more likely. Pinterest fell in sympathy, and the overhang compounds a capex guide of $130–145B that cut quarterly free cash flow to $784 million with buybacks frozen a third straight quarter.
MSTR — Strategy ($97.68, +4.99%) ⚠️
- Earnings: 2026-10-29 (73 days away) | Est. EPS $12.63 on $129.1M revenue
- 52W Range: $81.81 — $367.57 (73.4% below high)
- News: Strategy sold 3.46 million MSTR shares between August 10 and 16 for about $333.7 million net and bought no bitcoin, leaving holdings flat at 840,447 BTC. Proceeds went to STRC preferred dividends ($52.4M), STRC repurchases ($132.2M), and the USD reserve, which rose to $4.8 billion. Selling common to defend the preferred stack rather than accumulate BTC is a genuine change in posture.
NNE — Nano Nuclear Energy ($19.59, -0.36%)
- Earnings: 2026-08-12 (reported)
- 52W Range: $14.71 — $60.87 (67.8% below high)

- News: Nvidia will backstop as much as $105 billion of financing for the OpenAI-leased Ohio campus (see Breaking News). Shares were essentially flat despite the announcement and despite semiconductors leading the tape — a notable non-reaction eight sessions ahead of earnings.
OKLO — Oklo Inc. ($43.88, -1.13%)
- Earnings: 2026-08-07 (reported)
- 52W Range: $36.61 — $193.84 (77.4% below high)

RKLB — Rocket Lab USA ($82.08, +2.28%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-09 (84 days away) | Est. EPS -$0.05 on $230.9M revenue

- News: A post-earnings giveback after last week’s surge on fiscal Q4 results and FY2027 revenue guidance of $65–72 billion. Traders are reweighing dilution from the June financing plan and an ongoing export-control review against still-strong AI server demand.
SMR — NuScale Power ($9.19, -2.13%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-05 (80 days away) | Est. EPS -$0.12 on $5.4M revenue

TSM — Taiwan Semiconductor ($430.97, +1.08%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-15 (59 days away) | Est. EPS $4.46
- 52W Range: $223.70 — $479.00 (10.0% below high)
- Note: One of the day’s stronger watchlist names, consistent with semiconductor leadership — the iShares Semiconductor ETF rose about 2.4% even as the broad indices fell.
UNH — UnitedHealth Group ($395.62, -1.52%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-27 (71 days away) | Est. EPS $4.12 on $111.5B revenue
- 52W Range: $255.97 — $461.62 (14.3% below high)
- News: An amended shareholder derivative complaint filed August 7 in federal court in Minnesota alleges years of governance and cybersecurity lapses, including inflating Medicare Advantage revenue by making members appear sicker, systematically denying post-acute care via automated algorithms, and shutting down an internal audit program that had flagged billing problems. The complaint ties the fallout to more than $277 billion of lost stockholder value between December 2024 and August 2025.

Notable Voices
Ray Dalio says today’s AI market echoes 1929 and 2000 — Ray Dalio, The Motley Fool (2026-08-17)
Dalio argues AI valuations show classic bubble dynamics, pointing to an S&P 500 CAPE ratio near 41 — above the 1929 pre-crash level. His central worry is less the technology than the accounting: paper gains are ballooning far beyond the cash actually moving through the system, which is what turns a repricing into a rout when growth expectations slip.
Berkshire Hathaway turns buyer as Buffett backs Alphabet — Warren Buffett / Berkshire Hathaway, Forbes (2026-08-15)
Berkshire was a net buyer of equities for the first time in 14 quarters, purchasing about $23.5B against $3.7B of sales. The Alphabet stake is the headline, and it sits alongside a still-enormous cash position — the posture reads as selective conviction in cash-generative quality rather than a broad risk-on turn.
Stanley Druckenmiller dumped Micron and Intel and more than 11x’d a stake in Amazon — Stanley Druckenmiller, The Motley Fool (2026-08-17)
Duquesne’s Q2 13F shows a rotation out of legacy semiconductor manufacturers and into Amazon and AMD. The tell is where in the AI stack he wants exposure: compute platforms and hyperscale demand over commodity chip supply.
“We’ve entered the AI monetization phase” — Dan Ives, Wedbush, CNBC (2026-08-14)
Ives contends enterprises have moved from experimenting to monetizing AI, which he treats as the key validation. He cites a chip demand-to-supply ratio on the order of 13–14 to 1.
Cathie Wood’s ARK is buying Coinbase on the dip — Cathie Wood, ARK Invest, The Motley Fool (2026-08-14)
Wood added to Coinbase into earnings-driven weakness, keeping it around ARK’s sixth-largest holding at roughly a 4.2% weight in ARKK — continued long-horizon conviction in crypto infrastructure despite near-term earnings softness.
Market Outlook
Equities gave back ground on a day when the pressure came from outside the equity market itself: an expired US-Iran understanding pushed Brent above $90 and helped drive the 30-year Treasury yield to 5.31%, its highest since June 2007, even as semiconductors led on Nvidia’s $105 billion Ohio financing commitment. That divergence is the story — the AI capex engine is still firing, but it is now being financed into a long end that is repricing debt and supply, and rising energy costs feed directly back into the inflation path the Fed is watching. Ray Dalio’s CAPE-41 warning and the vendor-financing structures behind the Ohio deal are two framings of the same question: whether reported AI gains are converting into cash at the pace valuations assume. With Wednesday’s FOMC minutes, the Section 338 Canadian tariffs taking effect the same morning, and Nvidia’s earnings nine sessions out, the near-term path runs through catalysts that speak to policy, input costs, and AI monetization at once. A rising long end alongside a 6.6% jump in the VIX from a low base warrants attention rather than alarm — but it leaves little cushion if any of those three disappoints.
