| S&P 500 | 7,641.16 | -66.82 | -0.87% |
| NASDAQ | 26,067.17 | -263.92 | -1.00% |

| VIX | 16.01 | +1.12 | +7.52% |
Losses broadened as the day went on, and the Russell’s underperformance alongside a 7.5% VIX pop marks this as a genuine de-risking session rather than a rotation.
Breaking News & Macro Events
Walmart’s 10% Plunge Weighs on All Three Major Indexes — The Motley Fool
Walmart beat on revenue, beat on earnings, raised full-year guidance — and fell 9.2% to $103.84, its worst session in years. The problem was the composition: US comparable sales grew just 2.6% against a 3.7% consensus, the slowest pace since late 2020, and Q3 adjusted EPS guidance of $0.62–$0.64 implies a flattening earnings trajectory. Management also said it will cut prices to defend share. When the country’s largest retailer says it has to discount to hold traffic, that reads across to every consumer name — and it was the single largest drag on all three major indexes today. Trump Threatens Iran With Economic ‘D-Day,’ Oil Jumps — CNBC
The administration vowed unprecedented economic pressure on Iran, including a blockade of Iranian ports and tankers and secondary sanctions on third-country entities that assist. Crude responded immediately — WTI +2.8%, Brent +2.2% — pushing an energy-price impulse into an economy where core PCE is still running above 3%. This is the least convenient kind of oil rally: supply-driven, not demand-driven.
Treasury’s Bond Buyback Relief Rally Fades — Bloomberg
Treasury doubled its debt buyback program from $2B to $4B on Aug 19 (effective Sept 9 through Nov 4) after 30-year yields touched their highest since 2007. It bought one day. Yields reversed today: the 10-year back to 4.696% (+4.3bp) and the 30-year to 5.237% (+4.3bp), giving back most of Wednesday’s relief. The intervention moved the price, not the problem.

Methodology note: the continuous futures contracts for gold, silver, WTI and Brent again posted duplicated volume on Aug 18–19 — a contract-roll artifact that makes their prior closes unusable. Percentage changes above are taken from the liquid ETF proxies (GLD +0.34%, IAU +0.34%, SLV +2.75%, USO +2.77%, BNO +2.24%) and applied to the current futures level. FX changes are measured from end-of-session spot values, since the daily FX bars carry a stale close. Equity and index changes were recomputed from daily bars after the quote feed’s previous_close field again returned incorrect priors.
Yesterday’s story was gold, crypto and a falling dollar all pricing the same monetary trade. Today the dollar stopped falling and gold went flat — but crypto kept going and oil joined in. That’s a different mix: the metals-plus-crypto bid narrowed to just crypto, while energy added a genuine cost-push element.
Notable Voices
Right Now We Are Hostage to the Bond Market — Jim Cramer, CNBC (Aug 17)
Cramer argued that rising rates and bond volatility are capping equity upside regardless of underlying economic strength. Three sessions later, a 4.3bp backup in the 10-year alongside a failed Treasury intervention took 704 points off the Dow — the framing held up better than most calls made on a Monday.
Market Too Negative, Buying Opportunities Emerging — Jim Cramer, CNBC (Aug 18)
The contrarian counterpoint: sentiment is overly pessimistic against resilient data, with strength beneath the surface in consumer spending, travel demand and Home Depot’s best quarter in five years. Walmart’s 2.6% comps print is the first hard data point to cut against this thesis — and Home Depot itself fell 2.9% today.
Tom Lee’s Favorite Buy Ideas Heading Into the Fall — Tom Lee, Fundstrat, CNBC (Aug 20)
Lee stayed constructive, framing the current move as consolidation and pointing to S&P 500 upside toward 8,400–8,800 following a summer-into-fall drawdown. That target implies roughly 10–15% above today’s 7,641 close, which tells you how much of his case rests on the drawdown ending soon.
Market Outlook
The Dow shed 704 points in a broad de-risking session where every index finished lower and the VIX jumped 7.5%, with Walmart’s 9.2% post-earnings collapse doing outsized damage to both the index and the entire consumer complex. Two pressures converged unhelpfully: Walmart’s 2.6% US comps miss — the slowest since late 2020, accompanied by a plan to cut prices to defend share — undercut the resilient-consumer story at the same moment the Iran escalation pushed crude up nearly 3% and the 10-year back to 4.70%, erasing Wednesday’s Treasury-buyback relief. Softening real demand alongside a fresh energy-cost impulse, with core PCE still running 3.3% against a 3.63% funds rate, is the configuration that leaves a central bank with the fewest good options, and the fact that money moved into bitcoin and out of duration rather than into Treasuries suggests investors are reaching that conclusion themselves. Small caps and the pre-revenue nuclear names taking the worst of it — hit by Truist’s target cuts on top of the yield move — is the signature of a market repricing long-duration risk rather than rotating within it. Next Wednesday stacks the July core PCE print against Nvidia’s Q2 report, with Jackson Hole and Chair Warsh’s Thursday remarks immediately behind — a three-day window that will either validate the stagflation framing or break it, and positioning into it warrants caution.
