Breaking News & Macro Events

Fed Chairman Warsh warns on inflation at Jackson Hole — CNBC

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh used his first Jackson Hole address to call inflation “concerning,” saying summer readings that came in better than expected do not tell him underlying trends have meaningfully improved: “We must be confident that underlying inflation is moving to our objective, clearly and at sufficient speed.” He described the economy as at “full employment,” removing the labor-market justification for near-term easing.

Warsh declined to offer forward guidance or a reaction function, adding that “we should not indulge a regime in which market participants are looking primarily to the Fed for their next trade.” PBS framed the remarks as signaling stubborn inflation may ultimately require rate hikes. The cross-asset reaction was internally consistent with a hawkish repricing: the 10-year yield rose to 4.72%, the dollar index gained 0.5%, gold fell more than 3%, and the longest-duration equity risk was hit hardest.

Meta agrees to $17 billion child-safety settlement with 47 states — NPR (Aug 26)

Meta agreed to pay up to $17.1 billion over 10 years to 47 states, DC, and several territories, ending a federal trial in Oakland that had barely begun. Beyond the payment — the largest tech penalty of its kind — Meta accepted structural product changes: under-18 users capped at two hours per day on Facebook and Instagram, platform access blocked midnight to 6 a.m., and notifications limited during school hours. The engagement constraints, not the cash, are the item with long-run revenue implications.

US imposes 50% tariffs on $20bn of Canadian goods — Al Jazeera (Aug 22)

Trade talks lapsed at the August 22 deadline and 50% tariffs took effect on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods. Canada has signaled retaliatory tariffs of 15–50% on more than 700 American products effective September 8. Relevant here mainly as an inflation input — it pushes in the same direction as Warsh’s stated concern.

  • 52W Range: $196.00 — $287.20
  • News: No company-specific catalyst surfaced today. The move looks like continued post-earnings momentum and a rotation bid into mega-cap quality — Q2 net sales rose 20% to $200.6B with AWS up 37% to $42.2B, its fastest growth in 18 quarters (CNBC, Aug 3) — rather than fresh news.

CRCL — Circle ($87.14, -7.53%) ⚠️

HIMS — Hims & Hers Health ($28.84, -8.91%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-09 (73 days away) — est. EPS $0.09 on $730.1M revenue
  • 52W Range: $13.74 — $65.30
  • News: Second leg down on the Visa problem. Hims was enrolled in Visa’s Acquirer Monitoring Program after July chargebacks in its weight-loss subscription business breached acceptable levels (Bloomberg, Aug 21); weight-loss memberships account for 75% of disputes, and the company must hold its dispute rate under Visa’s 1.5% threshold for three straight months to exit. It already fell 8% on August 24. This compounds a late-July FTC action over billing and cancellation practices.

META — Meta Platforms ($578.02, +1.21%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-28 (61 days away) — est. EPS $6.93 on $63.3B revenue

NNE — Nano Nuclear Energy ($17.97, -6.60%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: last reported 2026-08-12
  • 52W Range: $14.71 — $60.87 — down 70% from the high

  • 52W Range: $164.07 — $236.54
  • News: Nvidia paused its “AI Compute Partnership” financing program for smaller cloud providers less than two months after launch. Prospective partners objected to Nvidia seeking influence over which customers could use the systems, and internal staff flagged regulatory and antitrust risk. Note the reported reaction to this headline was about -1.5%; the remaining decline came from the broader duration selloff.

  • 52W Range: $40.77 — $104.32
  • News: Still under pressure from the $1.5B all-stock acquisition of Personalis announced earlier in August, targeting the minimal residual disease cancer-testing market. Concerns center on dilution, the 28% premium, and a long path to synergies; the deal is expected to close in late 2026 or early 2027. Morgan Stanley has defended the logic, noting ~80% of Personalis clinical volume already runs through Tempus channels.

Precious metals took the brunt of the hawkish repricing: gold fell 3.2% and silver 4.4%, the sharpest moves on the board. Energy was effectively unchanged, so this was a rates-and-dollar story rather than a commodity-demand one.

Gold and crude percentages are derived from liquid ETF proxies (GLD -3.24% and IAU -3.23% for gold; USO -0.24%, BNO -0.44%), which agree with each other. The front-month futures series carried duplicated volume across Aug 26–27 and understated gold at -2.27% while overstating Brent’s decline at -1.59%. FX is priced from hourly bars.

Notable Voices

When Dan Ives names the next AI winners, does his own fund already own them? — Dan Ives, 24/7 Wall St (Aug 27)

Ives named Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Palantir, and CrowdStrike as the next tier of AI winners, citing roughly 20% demand acceleration at hyperscalers. His framing remains that this is early innings — fewer than 5% of US enterprises have strategically deployed AI — and that “the AI party goes to 4am.”

Druckenmiller warns Bessent’s Treasury is undermining the only fiscal disciplinarian the US has left — Stanley Druckenmiller, 24/7 Wall St (Aug 26)

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Druckenmiller criticized the Treasury’s $40B long-dated bond buyback program as suppressing the bond market’s fiscal signal. His argument: a 5.5% 30-year yield is not a crisis but “an invoice” for the deficit, and muting that signal removes the last real constraint on fiscal policy. Pointed timing given today’s move in yields.

Cathie Wood deploys $1.4 billion across AI infrastructure — Cathie Wood, The Motley Fool (Aug 28)

Wood shifted roughly $1.4B in ARK’s flagship ETF away from application-layer software toward AI infrastructure — Nvidia, Cerebras, CoreWeave, and Cloudflare — on the thesis that falling model costs compress software valuations while infrastructure captures the spend.

Cramer’s stock-picking playbook: one name stands out — Jim Cramer, CNBC (Aug 26)

Cramer argued that pessimism has created opportunity in beaten-down data center infrastructure names, singling out Micron on AI memory demand, and pointed to consumer resilience at Home Depot and Airbnb as evidence the bearish macro case is overstated.

Market Outlook

Today was a quiet tape hiding a violent rotation: the S&P slipped just 0.25% while the Russell 2000 fell 1.39% and the speculative complex — Tempus down 9.4%, Hims 8.9%, Circle 7.5%, Strategy 7.3%, and the entire nuclear cohort 4.6–6.6% — was repriced wholesale. The proximate cause is not a mystery. Kevin Warsh’s first Jackson Hole address called inflation “concerning” and declared the economy at full employment, and every asset class confirmed the read: the 10-year at 4.72%, the dollar up half a percent, and gold off more than 3%. That combination is the signature of rate-cut expectations being withdrawn, and it lands hardest on long-duration, cash-flow-negative equity — which describes most of the day’s losers far better than any of their individual news items does. What warrants attention is that mega-cap tech absorbed the flow rather than fighting it, with Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, and Meta all closing green on no fresh catalyst of consequence: this is a quality rotation inside the AI trade, not an exit from it. The September 4 nonfarm payrolls report is now the market’s next real test — with a Fed chair who has publicly removed the labor market as a reason to ease, a strong print may be read as hawkish rather than reassuring.
