Breaking News & Macro Events

Tim Cook’s last day as Apple CEO; John Ternus takes over tomorrow — 9to5Mac

Today marks Tim Cook’s final day as Apple’s chief executive after 15 years. Hardware engineering chief John Ternus, 50, becomes CEO effective September 1, 2026. Cook stays on as executive chairman of the board, where Apple says he will handle “certain aspects” of the company including engagement with policymakers worldwide. The succession was confirmed publicly back in April, which is why a leadership change of this magnitude moved the stock only -0.95% — the market has had four months to price it. Ternus joined Apple in 2001 on the product design team and has run hardware engineering since January 2021.

U.S. strikes Iranian rocket launchers on the Strait of Hormuz, crude jumps — NBC News

U.S. forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island on Sunday — the first American strikes on Iran since late July. CENTCOM said Revolutionary Guard forces were observed preparing to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the strait. Iran retaliated overnight against U.S. bases in Jordan and the UAE. Roughly a fifth of global seaborne oil transits Hormuz, which is why a two-launcher strike priced like a much larger event: Reuters reported Brent spiking $2.22 to $90.32 late Sunday.

Crude held most of the gain into the close — WTI +3.35% to $86.19 — but Brent gave nearly all of it back, finishing at $88.46, up just 0.41%. Energy equities followed the futures rather than the headlines: Exxon +2.73%, Chevron +2.14%.

AI capex anxiety hits the hyperscalers again — FX Leaders

Alphabet (-2.07%) and Amazon (-2.42%) were the day’s worst mega-cap performers, and the driver was spending, not geopolitics. Alphabet has guided 2026 capital expenditures to $175–185 billion and Amazon has flagged roughly $200 billion, with combined hyperscaler capex now above $450 billion for the year — against monetization that investors increasingly see as lagging the buildout. Sundar Pichai’s raised capex forecast already knocked the stock last week; a reported delay in YouTube revenue recognition added to the pile today.

Meta settles state child-safety claims for $17 billion — NPR

Announced August 26, Meta will pay just over $17 billion over 10 years to settle claims brought by 29 states in 2023 alleging it deliberately designed Facebook and Instagram to hook children, misled the public about harms, and improperly collected data from users under 13. CNN puts the all-in figure near $18 billion once other states and territories are included. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers approved the deal. The product mandates matter as much as the money: a cumulative two-hour daily cap across both apps that teens can only lift with parental permission, a “night mode” blocking feed, stories, and reels between midnight and 6 a.m., and muted notifications during school hours. Meta closed -1.04%.

  • 52W Range: $49.90 — $159.47
  • News: The day’s biggest watchlist move, and notably not a crypto-beta story — Bitcoin rose only +0.83% while Coinbase fell -1.40% and IBIT -1.33%. Standing catalysts include final OCC approval for Circle National Trust (among the first federal bank charters for a stablecoin issuer), the acquisition of 680+ IBM blockchain patent families, and the Arc public mainnet launch scheduled for September 16. No confirmed same-day catalyst for a 10% move — treat the gap as unexplained.

  • News: A genuine divergence — the stock rose nearly 4% while Bitcoin added just +0.83% and crypto-linked peers Coinbase (-1.40%) and IBIT (-1.33%) both fell. That decoupling from the underlying asset is the notable fact; no verified same-day catalyst.

US Dollar (DXY)99.44-0.24-0.24%

Two things stand out. Gold finished flat — a Middle East escalation that lifts crude 3.35% and does nothing for gold is the market declining to price systemic risk. And Brent badly lagged WTI, holding only +0.41% after touching $90.32 overnight, which compresses the Brent-WTI spread to about $2.27 and hints the supply fear is being read as regional rather than global.

Notable Voices

Tom Lee: August will end on a strong note, but the market might see a correction after — Tom Lee, Fundstrat, CNBC (2026-08-27)

Lee expected August to close strong and cautioned that a correction could follow the month’s end. The first half of that call landed — the S&P finished August up 2.62% — which makes the second half the more interesting question as September opens.

Dan Ives on the next leg of the AI trade — Dan Ives, Wedbush Securities, Yahoo Finance (2026-08-27)

Ives pointed to hyperscalers (Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon) and software names (Palantir, CrowdStrike) as the next beneficiaries of AI capital deployment, citing enterprise demand accelerating around 20% and characterizing the stage as “the AI party goes to 4 a.m.” Worth reading against today’s tape, where the market punished exactly those hyperscalers for the spending Ives frames as the opportunity.

Market Outlook

Equities closed the final session of August modestly lower, with the Dow’s -0.70% and a 9-of-11 sector decline masking a tape that was really about crude: WTI jumped 3.35% to $86.19 after U.S. strikes on Iranian rocket launchers near the Strait of Hormuz, and Energy (+2.03%) and Technology (+0.39%) were the only sectors to finish green. The composition matters more than the direction — a geopolitical supply shock that lifts energy, leaves the VIX at 14.92, and does nothing for gold is being priced as an inflation problem rather than a growth scare, a reading the 10-year yield at 4.76% reinforces. Underneath the headlines, the AI capex debate did more damage to index heavyweights than Iran did, with Alphabet -2.07% and Amazon -2.42% on renewed scrutiny of roughly $450 billion in combined hyperscaler spending against monetization investors see as lagging. August still finished up 2.62% on the S&P 500 and 3.93% on the NASDAQ, which validates the month-end strength Tom Lee flagged and sharpens his warning about what comes next. Friday’s August payrolls report is the week’s hinge: with the FOMC’s September 15–16 meeting carrying a Summary of Economic Projections and energy costs freshly reflating, a hot wage print would compress the easing path this market has been leaning on.
