Oil prices surge above $94 after U.S. strikes Iran in Hormuz — Yahoo Finance
Renewed U.S. military action against Iranian positions in the Strait of Hormuz sent crude sharply higher, with WTI closing up 5.46% at $90.73 and Brent up 5.15% at $95.22. The strikes reverse a partial normalization in energy prices that followed the collapsed June 17 U.S.–Iran memorandum, which unraveled after Iran demanded sanctions relief and an end to the naval blockade before reopening the waterway. The IEA has already cut its 2026 global supply forecast to 102 million barrels per day, a 4.3 million bpd year-over-year decline. Equities sold off across the board while the energy complex rallied — a classic supply-shock rotation.
September Fed decision is now a coin flip as rate hike odds increase post-Warsh — CNBC
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole keynote — in which he said underlying inflation trends have not “meaningfully improved” and the Fed has “work to do” — has repriced the September 15–16 FOMC meeting toward a hike. CME FedWatch has shown odds in the 56–66% range for a 25bp increase, while Kalshi traders put it near 48%. The Hormuz-driven energy shock is the direct mechanism: sustained crude above $90 makes the disinflation path considerably harder to argue.
Canada to hit US with retaliatory tariffs as trade war escalates — Al Jazeera
Following 50% U.S. tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods effective August 22, Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs on $27.6 billion of U.S. imports take effect September 8, at rates of 15%, 25%, or 50%. Targets include steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, with C$7.5 billion pledged to support affected Canadian workers and businesses. The escalation lands one week before the FOMC decision, adding a second supply-side inflation channel to an already complicated setup.
Global bond selloff pushes 10-year yield to a new 52-week high
The 10-year Treasury yield closed at 4.80%, up 4bp and above its prior 52-week high of 4.75% set on July 31. The move is not isolated to the U.S. — Japanese 10-year yields reached 3% and European sovereigns weakened in tandem. Higher long-end yields compress valuations for long-duration, high-multiple equities, which is precisely where today’s worst watchlist damage landed.

- News: Crypto stocks slide as Bitcoin and Ethereum hold flat — Today’s drop is rate-driven rather than company-specific: the 10-year breaking to new 52-week highs compresses high-beta, high-multiple valuations, and Warsh’s hawkish turn stalled the digital-asset rally. Gives back a chunk of yesterday’s +9.65% session.

- 52W Range: $13.74 — $65.30
- News: FTC sues Hims and Hers, stock falls — The slide extends a compounding regulatory overhang. The FTC, joined by Utah and Los Angeles County, sued over subscription, cancellation and privacy practices, including data sharing with Meta and Snap. Separately, Bloomberg reported on August 21 that Visa enrolled the company in its Acquirer Monitoring Program after weight-loss subscription chargebacks breached acceptable levels in July; Hims must hold its dispute rate under Visa’s 1.5% threshold for three consecutive months to exit.

- Earnings: 2026-10-29 (58 days away) — est. EPS $12.63 on $129.9M revenue
- 52W Range: $81.81 — $365.21

Funding came from selling 4,531,421 shares for $602.8 million in net proceeds, with the balance directed to STRC buybacks, STRC dividends and cash. The equity dilution plus rate-driven crypto weakness explains today’s underperformance.

- 52W Range: $14.71 — $60.87

- 52W Range: $36.61 — $193.84 (5.2% above 52-week low)
- News: No significant company-specific developments. Down roughly 80% from its 52-week high — the long-duration, pre-revenue profile is exactly what a rising 10-year punishes hardest.

It advances the stated goal of cutting prior-authorization volume 30% by 2026 and directly answers sustained criticism from patients, physicians and lawmakers. Best defensive performer on the watchlist.

Worth noting the unusual pairing: crude spiked on a live military escalation while gold fell 2.84%. When the safe-haven metal drops nearly 3% into a geopolitical shock, the rates channel is doing the driving — rising real yields are decisively outweighing the haven bid.
Notable Voices
The markets could rally ‘very strongly’ if the Fed holds rates in September — Tom Lee, CNBC (2026-08-31)
Fundstrat’s Tom Lee argues the setup is asymmetric: if the Fed declines to raise rates on September 16, equities could rally “very strongly,” implying much of the recent drawdown is hike-anticipation rather than deteriorating fundamentals. He sees crypto — Ethereum in particular — as the asset with “the most FOMO in Sept and into year-end.” Today’s tape, where rate-sensitive and high-beta names took the worst of the damage, is consistent with his read that positioning is the dominant variable into the meeting.
Market Outlook
Renewed U.S.–Iran hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz drove crude up more than 5% and pushed the 10-year Treasury yield to 4.80% — a new 52-week high — sending all four major indices lower, with the Russell 2000 (-1.23%) and NASDAQ (-1.03%) absorbing the most damage and the VIX jumping 9.52% off a low base. The mechanism matters more than the magnitude: this is a supply-side energy shock arriving two weeks before an FOMC meeting where hike odds already sit near a coin flip, which is why the pain concentrated in long-duration and high-beta names — CRCL -6.35%, MSTR -6.06%, OKLO -5.03%, SOFI -4.64% — while defensives like UNH and PFE finished green. Gold falling 2.84% into a live geopolitical escalation is the tell that rising real yields, not risk aversion, are setting the tone. Nike’s break to a fresh 52-week low and a decade-plus trough, against Apple’s +2.61% on the Ternus succession, underscores how sharply the market is currently discriminating between idiosyncratic stories and macro beta. Friday’s August payrolls report is the most important catalyst on the calendar — with July prints already showing a 23,000 job decline, a soft number colliding with $90 crude would hand the Fed a genuine stagflationary dilemma just nine days before it has to decide.
