A broad, low-drama advance. The Dow posted its best session in about a month and the S&P 500 its strongest day since Aug. 4, while the VIX slid back to 14.32 — the market’s fear gauge went the opposite direction from the headlines. Breadth was tilted toward large-cap tech: the Russell 2000’s +0.51% badly lagged the NASDAQ’s +1.40%.

Breaking News & Macro Events

NVIDIA to acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 billion — NVIDIA / TechCrunch

NVIDIA confirmed in a Thursday SEC filing that it will buy the open-source AI platform Hugging Face for $12,930,300,000, its second-largest acquisition on record after the $20 billion Groq asset purchase in December. Hugging Face hosts roughly three million models, one million applications and half a million datasets, serving over 18 million developers. Jensen Huang committed to keeping the platform open and framework-neutral. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027 — a bid to own the developer layer of AI, not just the silicon underneath it.

Yen jumps to one-month high as intervention watch intensifies — CNBC

The yen strengthened roughly 2% Thursday, touching 156.15 per dollar at one point and reaching its strongest level since Aug. 3, reversing a month of gradual decline. Two forces drove it: rising bets on Bank of Japan rate hikes — BOJ board member Hajime Takata left the door open to an outsized move and back-to-back hikes — and continued vigilance over official intervention. Japan spent a record ¥15.4 trillion ($98 billion) supporting the currency between July 30 and Aug. 26. A firmer yen and softer dollar were part of what let US equities rally.

Iran launches retaliatory strikes on Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain — Al Jazeera

Following US strikes on southern Iran that killed 11, Iran fired roughly 25 ballistic missiles at Jordan and Kuwait plus two dozen drones at Bahrain, Kuwait and Erbil on Sept. 1–2 — the heaviest US–Iran exchange in over a month, amid an intensifying standoff over the Strait of Hormuz. Jordanian air defenses engaged 13 missiles and intercepted 10; there were no American casualties. Note the market’s verdict: WTI rose only 0.76% and the VIX fell nearly 6%. Investors are treating this as a contained risk premium rather than a supply event — a positioning that would unwind quickly if Hormuz transit were actually disrupted.

Canada’s counter-tariffs on 700+ US products take effect Sept. 8 — Government of Canada

Canada will impose tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% on more than 700 US-origin products next Tuesday, covering C$27.6 billion (~$19.9 billion) of goods to match new US duties dollar-for-dollar. The 50% band hits steel, aluminum, furniture and clothing; 25% covers cheese, appliances and some seafood; 15% covers electronics and tools. This is a dated, scheduled catalyst five sessions out — one of the few known trade-policy events on the near calendar.

Only headlines independently verified against a primary or major-outlet source are linked below. Tickers without a linked story had no verifiable market-moving news today — price and calendar data are complete for all 22.

Dividend Stocks

COST — Costco Wholesale ($925.41, -0.37%)

  • Earnings: 2026-09-24 (21 days away)
  • Ex-Dividend: 2026-07-23 (last) | Yield: 0.63%
  • 52W Range: $844.06 — $1,096.50
  • News: August sales rise 9.9% to $23.70B — comps +8.4% (US +9.0%), digitally-enabled sales +17.9%. Full fiscal 2026 net sales of $297.3B, up 10.2%. Operationally excellent; the stock still finished lower, and it sits 15.6% below its 52-week high.

NKE — Nike Inc. ($38.77, +1.24%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-01 (28 days away)
  • Ex-Dividend: 2026-08-31 (passed) | Payable 2026-09-30 | Yield: 4.29%
  • 52W Range: $37.97 — $76.97 (within 2.1% of 52W low) ⚠️
  • The turnaround story remains unrewarded — shares trade at roughly half their 52-week high, and the 4.29% yield is now doing the heavy lifting for holders.

PFE — Pfizer Inc. ($28.81, -0.62%)

  • Earnings: 2026-11-03 (61 days away)
  • Ex-Dividend: 2026-07-23 (last) | Yield: 5.93%
  • 52W Range: $23.58 — $29.09 (within 1.0% of 52W high) ⚠️
  • An unusual combination worth noting: a near-52-week-high price and a 5.93% yield. Pfizer has quietly been one of the watchlist’s better performers.

UPS — United Parcel Service ($103.50, +0.49%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-27 (54 days away)
  • Ex-Dividend: 2026-08-16 (last) | Payable 2026-09-02 | Yield: 6.37%
  • 52W Range: $82.00 — $122.41
  • Highest yield on the watchlist at 6.37%, sitting 15.4% below its 52-week high — the market is pricing real doubt about the payout’s runway.

Growth Stocks

AAPL — Apple Inc. ($328.21, +1.07%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-29 (56 days away)
  • 52W Range: $225.95 — $344.57 (within 4.7% of 52W high) ⚠️
  • News: John Ternus succeeded Tim Cook as CEO on Sept. 1 — Cook moves to executive chairman after a 15-year run that took Apple from roughly $350 billion to about $4.6 trillion. Ternus, who joined the product design team in 2001 and led hardware engineering, inherits the company at a near-record valuation. A leadership handoff this consequential landing with the stock 5% off its high says the market views it as continuity, not rupture.

AMZN — Amazon.com Inc. ($258.90, +0.98%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-29 (56 days away)
  • 52W Range: $196.00 — $287.20
  • News: FTC and 22 states sued Amazon over ad-auction practices — filed Aug. 31 in the Western District of Washington, alleging Amazon overcharged advertisers by more than $20 billion since 2019 by overriding its own auction prices, affecting 1.2 million advertisers including over 500,000 small and medium businesses. Amazon denies wrongdoing. Advertising is among its highest-margin segments, which is what makes this more than a headline risk.

CRCL — Circle Internet Group ($103.23, +16.15%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-11 (69 days away)
  • 52W Range: $49.90 — $159.47
  • News: BlackRock backs Circle’s $222M Arc token presale — the Arc Layer-1 mainnet is set for public launch Sept. 16, valuing the network at $3B, with BlackRock, DTCC, Visa, Mastercard, ICE, Standard Chartered and MoneyGram as founding validators. Arc uses USDC directly for transaction fees, removing gas-token volatility for institutional cross-border flows. Today’s move rode both the Arc news and a firm bitcoin tape.

GOOG — Alphabet Inc. ($339.08, +1.26%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-28 (55 days away)
  • 52W Range: $226.76 — $404.47

HIMS — Hims & Hers Health ($27.82, -3.24%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-09 (67 days away)
  • 52W Range: $13.74 — $65.30
  • The watchlist’s only significant decliner on a day the S&P gained 1.06% — notable relative weakness, and shares remain 57% below their 52-week high.

INTC — Intel Corporation ($91.67, +1.55%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-22 (49 days away)
  • 52W Range: $23.75 — $142.35
  • Context: Intel priced an upsized $20B common stock offering on Aug. 10 — 210,526,315 shares at $95, raised from an initially proposed $15B, netting roughly $19.7B for capital expenditures and working capital. Shares now trade below that $95 offering price, which is worth watching as a sentiment marker on the foundry buildout.

META — Meta Platforms ($610.68, +2.12%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-28 (55 days away)
  • 52W Range: $520.26 — $790.80
  • News: Meta details how it will implement sweeping teen-safety changes — following the multistate settlement announced Aug. 26 resolving claims by 51 attorneys general. Meta pays states $12.19B over 10 years, rising to as much as $17.1B contingent on TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat facing comparable enforcement. Product changes include a two-hour daily app limit, hidden likes, disabled cosmetic filters and a midnight–6 a.m. “night mode” for teens. Most default protections roll out within six months; age assurance takes up to a year. Today’s +2.12% suggests investors see the engagement hit as manageable.

MSTR — Strategy ($144.82, +17.48%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-10-29 (56 days away)
  • 52W Range: $81.81 — $365.21
  • The watchlist’s biggest gainer, tracking bitcoin’s roughly 5.5% advance to about $81,500 with characteristic leverage — roughly 3x the move in the underlying. Still 60% below its 52-week high, a reminder of how violently that leverage cuts both ways.

NNE — Nano Nuclear Energy ($17.65, +0.28%)

  • 52W Range: $14.71 — $60.87

NVDA — NVIDIA Corporation ($228.45, +1.38%)

  • Earnings: 2026-11-17 (75 days away)
  • 52W Range: $164.07 — $236.54 (within 3.4% of 52W high) ⚠️
  • News: Confirmed the $12.9B Hugging Face acquisition — see Breaking News above. The market’s read was mild approval rather than concern about the price tag, leaving shares within striking distance of a record.

OKLO — Oklo Inc. ($39.84, +0.94%)

  • Earnings: 2026-11-10 (68 days away)
  • 52W Range: $36.61 — $193.84
  • Down 79% from its 52-week high and hovering just 8.8% above its low — the nuclear-buildout trade has fully deflated on this name.

RKLB — Rocket Lab USA ($63.81, -0.37%)

  • Earnings: 2026-11-09 (67 days away)
  • 52W Range: $37.57 — $151.00

SMR — NuScale Power ($9.75, +1.97%)

  • Earnings: 2026-11-05 (63 days away)
  • 52W Range: $7.21 — $57.42
  • Down 83% from its 52-week high, the most severe drawdown on the watchlist.

SMCI — Super Micro Computer ($37.87, +3.18%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-03 (61 days away)
  • 52W Range: $19.48 — $58.78
  • Outperformed on the AI-infrastructure bid, consistent with the day’s NVIDIA-led tape.

SOFI — SoFi Technologies ($18.51, +3.76%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-10-27 (54 days away)
  • 52W Range: $14.88 — $32.73
  • A fintech name moving with the risk-on, crypto-strong tone rather than on company-specific news.

TEM — Tempus AI ($64.66, +4.26%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-03 (61 days away)
  • 52W Range: $40.77 — $104.32

TSM — Taiwan Semiconductor ($417.01, +0.25%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-15 (42 days away)
  • 52W Range: $230.30 — $479.00
  • Conspicuously flat given NVIDIA’s +1.38% and SMCI’s +3.18% — the foundry did not participate in Thursday’s AI bid.

UNH — UnitedHealth Group ($400.94, +0.41%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-27 (54 days away)
  • 52W Range: $255.97 — $461.62

US Dollar (DXY)98.99-0.43-0.43%

The cross-asset picture is internally consistent and worth reading together: the dollar fell 0.43%, the yen surged 1.91%, the 10-year yield eased 3bp to 4.76%, and gold pushed up 0.92% to $4,518. Falling yields plus a weaker dollar plus record-adjacent gold is not a “growth is accelerating” signal — it is a market repricing the path of policy. Oil’s modest gains keep a Hormuz risk premium in the price without pricing an actual disruption.

Notable Voices

The markets could rally ‘very strongly’ if the Fed holds rates in September — Tom Lee, Fundstrat / CNBC (2026-08-31)

Lee argues that a Fed hold at the Sept. 15 meeting, paired with softer jobs and CPI data, would fuel a “very strong” rally. He puts S&P support around 7,300–7,400 with a path toward 8,200+ by year-end, and reads the mounting bearish consensus as the setup for an upside surprise. Thursday’s +1.06% move on falling yields is directionally what his thesis predicts.

September is set up to be a strong month for stocks — Tom Lee, Fundstrat / CNBC (2026-09-01)

Pushing against September’s historical weakness, Lee forecasts strong performance and singled out Ethereum as the crypto most likely to see FOMO from September through year-end if the Fed holds, with bitcoin potentially reaching six figures.

No substantive commentary within the last three days was verifiable for Dan Ives, Chamath Palihapitiya, Cathie Wood, Jim Cramer, Stanley Druckenmiller, Howard Marks, Ray Dalio, Jamie Dimon or Warren Buffett.

Market Outlook

Equities rallied broadly Thursday — the S&P 500’s best day since Aug. 4 — but the driver was in the bond and currency markets, not the earnings tape: the 10-year eased to 4.76%, the dollar fell 0.43%, the yen jumped nearly 2%, and that combination relieved fears of a Federal Reserve hike at the Sept. 15–16 meeting. That inversion of the usual setup is the key thing to understand about this market: with fed funds at 3.63%, CPI still grinding higher, and a Fed chair focused on stubborn inflation, weak labor data has become bullish for stocks rather than bearish, which is why the VIX could fall 6% on a day featuring Iranian missile strikes on three US partners and Canadian counter-tariffs eight days out. Underneath the index gains, dispersion remains extreme — bitcoin proxies MSTR (+17.5%) and CRCL (+16.2%) surged while the nuclear complex sits 79–83% below its highs and TSM went nowhere on an AI-led day — which suggests the rally is narrower than the 1%+ headline implies and warrants attention rather than extrapolation. Tomorrow’s August employment report at 8:30am ET is the immediate test, with consensus at just +53,000 payrolls after July’s -23,000 and 103,000 in downward revisions; a number strong enough to revive hike expectations would undercut precisely the mechanism that powered Thursday’s advance. Watch whether the jobs print and the Sept. 11 CPI release let the Fed hold on Sept. 16 — that sequence, more than any single earnings result, will set the tone into quarter-end.
