A three-times-consensus jobs beat, and the market gave back less than half a percent. Look at the internals before calling this risk-off: the Russell 2000 rose 0.25% while the Dow fell 0.51%, semiconductors led the tape higher, and the VIX ticked up only 0.22 to 14.53. This was a narrow, large-cap-led drift — not a repricing of risk.

Breaking News & Macro Events

US adds 162,000 jobs in August, blowing past the 53,000 consensus — CNBC / BLS

Nonfarm payrolls rose 162,000 in August against a consensus of roughly 53,000 — the strongest monthly gain since March — while the unemployment rate held at 4.1%. June and July were revised up by a combined 55,000. The gain was concentrated rather than broad: food service added 59,000 (against a 12,000 monthly average over the prior year) and local-government education added 42,000. Markets moved toward pricing a September hike, with reported odds around 60%, an unusual place for this cycle to be. The BLS-confirmed figure is already in FRED: total payrolls rose from 158,913k in July to 159,075k in August.

Chip tariff phase two: build in America or pay — TechTimes

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed on Sept. 3 that chipmakers building fabrication capacity in the US will receive duty-free access, while those that do not face steep import duties. Lutnick specifically cited TSMC’s $265 billion Arizona commitment as the policy working as designed. TSM rose 3.00% on the read-through. Note the asymmetry this creates — it is a subsidy to incumbents with US capacity and a tax on everyone else, and it lands with the September FOMC and CPI both inside the next seven sessions.

FTC and 22 states sue Amazon over a “secret ad surcharge scheme” — Federal Trade Commission

The FTC and 22 state attorneys general filed suit in Seattle alleging Amazon secretly inflated prices in its search-advertising auctions, extracting more than $20 billion from about 1.2 million advertisers since 2019 — nearly half of them small and medium businesses. Amazon denies wrongdoing and says its auctions lower costs. AMZN closed down just 0.29%, which tells you the market is treating this as a multi-year penalty risk rather than a threat to the advertising business itself.

  • Earnings: 2026-10-22 (48 days away) — est. $0.39 EPS on $16.4B revenue
  • 52W Range: $24.05 — $142.35
  • News: Intel surged on investment enthusiasm and a stronger-than-expected PC market. Global Equities Research’s Trip Chowdhry read Dell’s results as evidence of sharply rising demand for Intel CPUs in AI infrastructure, arguing accelerators still need host processors and pointing to the x86 installed base and Clearwater Forest. Intel also priced an upsized $20 billion equity offering at $95/share to fund capital spending — the market absorbed that dilution and bid the stock up anyway, which is the more interesting signal.

Gold gave back 0.84% and the dollar firmed slightly — the textbook response to a hot labor print. But hold that thought against the bond market: the 10-year rose all of 2 basis points, and the 10-year breakeven sits at 2.35%, up a single basis point. If the market genuinely believed a hike was coming and inflation was re-accelerating, the long end would have done considerably more than that. After Thursday’s 1.9% surge, the yen went nowhere.

Notable Voices

September is set up to be a strong month for stocks — Tom Lee, Fundstrat, CNBC (2026-09-01)

Lee argues the bearish consensus has become crowded enough to be the setup for upside, and that a Fed hold on Sept. 15 alongside softer jobs and CPI data could produce a very strong rally. Worth noting the jobs half of that thesis broke three days later — this call now rests entirely on Friday’s CPI.

Revenge of the “Magnificent Seven” — time to buy — Jim Cramer, CNBC (2026-09-03)

Cramer contends the megacap complex has underperformed long enough to be genuinely cheap, citing catalysts across Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla and framing their AI capital spending as offering real return potential.

Market Outlook

August payrolls came in at 162,000 against a 53,000 consensus, and equities responded with a shrug — the S&P 500 slipped 0.38% while small caps rose and semiconductors led, hardly the profile of a market bracing for tighter policy. The interesting tell is in rates rather than stocks: the 10-year moved two basis points and breakevens rose one, which suggests the repricing is confined to the near-term policy path rather than reflecting any change in the long-run inflation or growth view. Meanwhile the day’s biggest single-name moves — Intel up 4.72%, Super Micro up 4.62% — both traced back to one Dell earnings report rather than anything macro, a reminder that AI infrastructure demand is still setting its own agenda independent of the rate debate. With reported hike odds near 60% into a Sept. 15–16 FOMC, the gap between what futures imply and what the long end is willing to confirm warrants attention. Friday’s August CPI is now the entire ballgame — it is the last major input before the Fed decides, and it arrives after a holiday-shortened week that leaves little room to reposition.
