Breaking News & Macro Events

Brent crude tops $100 as U.S.-Iran tit-for-tat strikes stoke oil supply worries — CNBC

Brent crossed $100 a barrel for the first time since July after U.S. forces destroyed five Iranian crude tankers Tuesday night in retaliation for an attempted attack on an American warship, and Iran responded by striking ten ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway carries roughly a fifth of global seaborne oil, and transits have collapsed from around 130 vessels a day to a low double-digit trickle. This is a supply shock, not a demand story — which is why equities fell while energy names and crude both rallied.

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs worth $27.6 billion take effect as trade rift deepens — CNBC

Canada’s counter-tariffs on $27.6B of U.S. goods took effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, with rates from 15% to 50% across steel, aluminum, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment and electronics. Ottawa framed it as a dollar-for-dollar answer to the 50% U.S. Section 338 tariffs imposed on roughly $20B of Canadian exports last month. The second-order effect that matters for markets is goods-price pass-through landing in the same CPI prints the Fed is about to react to.

September Fed decision is a coin flip as rate hike odds increase post-Warsh — CNBC

Markets now price meaningful odds of a 25bp hike at next week’s FOMC — CME FedWatch is near 56%, with Kalshi and Polymarket closer to 48-49%. The repricing followed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole remarks arguing that a better-than-expected summer of inflation data did not prove the underlying trend had improved. Today’s oil move pushes in the same direction.

  • 52W Range: $37.35 — $74.57 (closed at a fresh 52-week low) ⚠️
  • News: Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200 billion market-cap wipeout — Nike leaves the index on 2026-09-21, replaced by Dell, Palo Alto Networks, Arista and SanDisk. It keeps its S&P 500 membership. Passive deletion flows are a known mechanical headwind into the rebalance date.

PFE — Pfizer Inc. ($27.78, -0.04%)

AAPL — Apple Inc. ($315.34, -0.28%)

AMZN — Amazon.com Inc. ($252.40, -1.78%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-29 (50 days away)

CRCL — Circle ($92.99, -3.32%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-11 (63 days away)
  • 52W Range: $49.90 — $159.47
  • News: Circle doubles down on stablecoin payments with Tazapay acquisition — the deal extends USDC cross-border rails into Asia-Pacific and emerging markets, and Circle’s Arc blockchain network launches 2026-09-16. Today’s decline tracked broad crypto-adjacent weakness rather than company news.

GOOG — Alphabet Inc. ($328.38, -2.09%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-28 (49 days away)
  • 52W Range: $236.58 — $404.47
  • Sold off harder than the tape, plausibly as the direct read-through from Meta’s consumer AI agent launch.

HIMS — Hims & Hers Health ($27.90, -0.96%)

  • Earnings: 2026-11-09 (61 days away)
  • 52W Range: $13.74 — $65.30

INTC — Intel Corporation ($106.24, +1.69%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-22 (43 days away)
  • 52W Range: $24.05 — $142.35
  • One of the few green names on the board. Context: Intel priced an upsized $20B common stock offering at $95/share back on 2026-08-10 to fund capex and the foundry roadmap — the stock has held well above the offering price since.

META — Meta Platforms ($653.69, +6.55%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-10-28 (49 days away)
  • 52W Range: $520.26 — $790.80
  • News: Why Meta Platforms stock rallied today — Meta launched Muse, an autonomous AI personal agent, on Tuesday evening. It executes tasks end to end (booking travel, filling forms, handling payments) across iOS, Android and web, and it arrives with Meta’s first tiered consumer AI subscription at $20 and $100 a month over a free tier. Mizuho called it the start of a product cycle “not priced into shares”; KeyBanc reiterated Overweight with a $780 target. This is the first credible direct-monetization path for Meta’s AI capex, which is why the reaction was this size.

MSTR — Strategy ($132.70, -2.80%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-29 (50 days away)
  • 52W Range: $81.81 — $365.21
  • News: Strategy holds off on bitcoin purchases as it buys preferred stock — the 2026-09-08 8-K shows holdings unchanged at 845,050 BTC ($63.73B cost, ~$75,412 average). Instead the company repurchased 1.81M STRC shares for $176.3M and doubled its digital-credit buyback authorization to $2B. Bitcoin itself was roughly flat today near $78,300, so MSTR’s decline is NAV-premium compression, not a coin move.

NNE — Nano Nuclear Energy ($18.17, -6.10%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: last reported 2026-08-12
  • 52W Range: $14.71 — $60.87
  • Worst performer on the watchlist. No company-specific news surfaced for today — this looks like sector beta, with all four nuclear names lower.

NVDA — NVIDIA Corporation ($223.67, -0.91%)

  • Earnings: 2026-11-17 (69 days away)
  • 52W Range: $165.17 — $235.74
  • News: Nvidia agrees to buy Hugging Face for almost $13 billion (2026-09-03) — $11.9B to shareholders plus $1B in retention equity, closing in H1 2027. It is Nvidia’s second-largest deal ever and buys distribution to 18M developers and 3M hosted models.

OKLO — Oklo Inc. ($42.57, -1.71%)

  • Earnings: 2026-11-10 (62 days away)
  • 52W Range: $36.61 — $193.84

RKLB — Rocket Lab USA ($63.07, -4.25%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-09 (61 days away)
  • 52W Range: $37.57 — $151.00
  • No adverse company news found; recent flow has actually been constructive, with Berenberg initiating at Buy in early September. Reads as high-beta de-risking on a risk-off tape.

SMCI — Super Micro Computer ($38.93, -3.30%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-03 (55 days away)
  • 52W Range: $19.48 — $58.78

SMR — NuScale Power ($10.81, -3.31%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-05 (57 days away)
  • 52W Range: $7.21 — $57.42

SOFI — SoFi Technologies ($17.33, -3.78%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-10-27 (48 days away)
  • 52W Range: $14.88 — $32.73
  • Rate-sensitive lender into a week where the market is pricing a Fed hike — the cleanest example on this list of today’s macro doing the work.

TEM — Tempus AI ($61.28, -4.68%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-03 (55 days away)
  • 52W Range: $40.77 — $104.32

TSM — Taiwan Semiconductor ($435.36, -0.83%)

UNH — UnitedHealth Group ($393.06, -1.94%)

The 10-year’s 4.837% close is a fresh 52-week high. Gold rallying alongside a flat dollar and rising real-yield pressure is the tell that today’s bid was geopolitical hedging rather than a rates trade.

Market Outlook

Equities sold off broadly — S&P 500 -0.48%, Dow -0.77%, and a notably weaker Russell 2000 at -1.32% — as Brent vaulted past $100 on U.S.-Iran strikes in the Strait of Hormuz and the 10-year Treasury yield closed at a 52-week high of 4.84%. An energy supply shock landing six days before an FOMC meeting where markets already price roughly even odds of a rate hike is an uncomfortable combination: it lifts headline inflation exactly when Chair Warsh has signaled he wants to re-establish credibility on the 2% target, and the small-cap underperformance suggests investors are repricing rate-sensitive balance sheets rather than trimming growth exposure. That Meta could still add 6.6% on the Muse launch shows idiosyncratic AI catalysts continue to cut through a hostile macro tape, which warrants attention for anyone assuming correlations have gone to one. Friday’s August CPI is now the most consequential print of the quarter — it lands four days before the decision, and a hot headline number would make a September 16 hike close to settled.
