Oil surges as US–Iran strikes intensify around the Strait of Hormuz — CNBC

Crude was the day’s dominant story. WTI climbed steadily through the US session — from $96.28 in early trading to $103.05 at the close — for a 6.60% gain, while Brent added 6.61% to $108.35, its highest level since May. US officials reported that Iran attempted to attack Navy ships after targeting an aircraft carrier with ballistic missiles; Iranian state media said a US missile struck a small oil tanker near Kharg Island, and Iran-backed Houthi militants attacked several energy facilities in Saudi Arabia. With the conflict now in its seventh month, Goldman Sachs has flagged the risk of crude pushing above $120 a barrel if attacks on shipping continue.

Piper Sandler splits the nuclear sector, and the whole complex sells off — 24/7 Wall St.

Analyst Dimple Gosai initiated coverage across small modular reactor developers with deliberately divergent ratings — Oklo a Buy at $55, X-Energy a Sell at $9 — arguing that financing structure, not reactor technology, determines which developers actually build a first plant and win customers. The market focused on the bearish half: every name in the group fell roughly 5%, including the one that got the Buy.

Intel slides as Piper Sandler starts coverage at Neutral — Yahoo Finance

The same firm initiated Intel at Neutral with a $110 target, saying the stock’s recent advance leaves little near-term room to run. The call landed on top of profit-taking from a parabolic move earlier in the week driven by an unconfirmed report that Intel could raise selected PC processor prices by 10%.

Gold falling 1.98% on the same day crude jumped 6.6% and the 10-year yield rose 11 basis points is the tell that this was a supply-shock repricing, not a flight to safety.

Market Outlook

Equities logged a fourth straight decline as a 6.6% crude spike — WTI to $103.05, Brent to $108.35 — pulled the inflation debate back to the center of the tape, with the S&P 500 off 0.58% and the VIX up 8.38% to 17.84. The composition of the move warrants attention: the 10-year yield rose 11 basis points to 4.94% while gold fell 1.98%, a combination that reads as a supply-shock repricing rather than a flight to safety, and energy equities conspicuously failed to capture the crude move at all. Small caps and rate-sensitive growth bore the damage — the Russell 2000 fell 1.04%, and Piper Sandler’s split initiation across the nuclear complex knocked Oklo down 6.32% and NuScale 5.55% on a financing-structure argument rather than anything operational. Apple’s 3.56% post-event gain and TSMC’s 53.3% August revenue growth suggest the AI hardware cycle remains intact beneath the macro noise, but the dispersion between those winners and the broad decline suggests caution about reading today as anything like risk appetite. Tomorrow’s August CPI print at 8:30 a.m. ET lands six days before an FOMC meeting carrying a fresh dot plot — a narrow window in which an oil-driven inflation impulse could reset rate expectations.
