AI infrastructure stocks slump on calls for an AI slowdown — CNBC

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a weekend essay, “We Must Pace the Frontier,” arguing the industry “must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models.” Sam Altman and Elon Musk backed him; President Trump pushed back against regulation. The market read it as a threat to the AI capex cycle, and the damage was concentrated in the hardware supply chain: the SMH semiconductor ETF fell -4.75%, SOXX -5.63%, Micron -5.25%, Intel and Applied Materials more than -4% each, and Nvidia about -3%. Notably, the large-cap AI consumers went the other way — GOOG +3.06% and META +2.71% — so this was a supply-chain de-rating, not a market-wide risk-off day.

Oil spikes on Saudi pipeline shutdown, then fades — TheStreet via Yahoo Finance

Fresh attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and a drone strike prompted Saudi Arabia to temporarily shut its East-West pipeline, the main bypass around Hormuz. Brent surged more than 3% toward $106 in early trading after gaining nearly 9% last week, then gave back most of the intraday move. Settle-to-settle, WTI finished +1.79% at $101.84 and Brent +1.54% at $106.22. Oil is at four-month highs two days before a Fed decision where the market is already leaning toward a hike.

10-year yield touches a multiyear high above 5% ahead of the Fed — CNBC

The 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.01% intraday, its highest since October 2023, before easing to close at 4.96%. Per Fundstrat, CME FedWatch odds of a 25bp hike on Wednesday jumped to roughly 85% from 59% a week earlier after Friday’s inflation report, and Treasury Secretary Bessent announced $6 billion in longer-dated bond buybacks to lean against the move. The current target range is 3.50–3.75%.

Notable Voices

Stocks tumble as the 10-year yield edges close to 5% — Tom Lee, Fundstrat (2026-09-13)

Lee is taking the other side of the 85% hike odds: he expects the Fed to hold, and argues a “face-ripper” rally could follow if it does. His favored trades remain crypto, energy, downstream AI beneficiaries (Magnificent Seven, software), Ethereum, and small caps. Fundstrat’s Mark Newton expects relief in bonds and crude within 3–5 days but flags weakening breadth in consumer discretionary, healthcare, and financials.

From Industrial Revolution to AI Revolution: why global GDP growth could double — Cathie Wood, ARK Invest via 24/7 Wall St. (2026-09-14)

Wood argues five converging platforms — AI, robotics, energy storage, blockchain, and multi-omic sequencing — could at least double real global GDP growth from its ~3% historical trend. She cites Nvidia’s 106% revenue growth and Tesla’s 1.48 million active FSD subscriptions as evidence the technologies are already monetizing. Worth reading against today’s tape: the market just repriced the AI hardware chain on the opposite premise.

Market Outlook

Monday was a narrow selloff dressed up as a broad one: the S&P 500 slipped -0.48% while the VIX jumped +7.95% to 17.10, and nearly all the damage sat in semiconductors and AI hardware (SMH -4.75%) after Dario Amodei’s call to slow frontier AI development drew public backing from Altman and Musk. The tell that this is a supply-chain de-rating rather than a growth scare is that GOOG (+3.06%) and META (+2.71%) rallied on the same news, while crude settling higher on the Saudi pipeline shutdown and a 10-year yield that kissed 5.01% intraday kept the macro backdrop tight. With CME FedWatch pricing roughly an 85% chance of a 25bp hike, Wednesday’s FOMC decision is the whole week: a hike into $100+ oil and 5% yields would test the AI-consumer names that held up today, while a hold would vindicate Tom Lee’s contrarian call and likely spark a sharp relief bid in the very names that sold off. Retail sales land the same morning, so watch whether consumer data gives the Fed cover in either direction.
