A notable detail about the shape of today’s session: the S&P gapped up roughly 1% at the open and then went nowhere. SPY opened at 761.25 and closed at 762.68, drifting in a ~2-point band for six and a half hours. The entire gain was set before the first trade — this was an overnight repricing of Wednesday’s Fed decision plus this morning’s 8:30am data, not an intraday trend.

Breaking News & Macro Events

Fed hikes 25bp to 3.75%–4.00%, its first increase since 2023 — CNBC

The FOMC met September 15–16 and voted 12–0 to raise the target range a quarter point to 3.75%–4.00%, with the new range taking effect today. The statement framed the move as supporting “a timelier return” to the 2% goal while describing economic activity as expanding at a solid pace with resilient domestic spending and robust capital investment. The accompanying statement marks the first hike of a cycle that markets had spent most of the year assuming was over.

Warsh: inflation is still too high — CNBC

The updated Summary of Economic Projections carried a hawkish tilt: 16 of 18 participants see another increase later this year, and the median year-end 2026 federal funds rate of 4.1% implies one more 25bp move. Equities sold off into Wednesday’s close on that dot plot — the S&P fell to 7,551.81 and the VIX rose to 17.71. Today reversed all of it and more.

Labor and manufacturing data undercut the hawkish read

This morning’s releases did the work. Initial jobless claims came in at 196K against a 208K consensus, continuing claims at 1.73M versus 1.78M expected, and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index printed 37.8 against a 30.5 forecast. The combination — a labor market that isn’t cracking and factory activity accelerating — let the market re-read the hike as a strong-economy adjustment rather than the opening move of a grinding tightening cycle. The 10-year yield fell about 6bp to 4.95%, snapping a multi-day climb.

Gold rallying nearly 2% into a rate hike is the odd one out. Most of that move came in the hours immediately after Wednesday’s 2pm announcement, which fits a market reading the Fed as unlikely to sustain a long tightening campaign. Crude fell for a third straight session, with Brent down from $108.75 on the 15th to $104.10 — easing one of the inflation inputs that made the hike necessary.

Notable Voices

FOMC could trigger a very big rally in equities — Tom Lee, Fundstrat, CNBC (2026-09-15)

Lee called the September meeting a “pivot point” and argued equities rally on either outcome, hold or hike. He sees the S&P clearing 8,000 and 2027 earnings reaching $425 per share against a ~$350 consensus. Filed the day before the hike — and so far the tape is cooperating.

It’s not clear to me we’ve slayed inflation — Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan, Yahoo Finance (2026-09-17)

The direct counterweight to Lee. Dimon argues persistent inflation, global deficits, and the capital demands of AI and infrastructure keep upward pressure on rates. He said he would buy neither the S&P nor long-dated Treasurys at current valuations, and named labor market strength as the indicator that matters most.

Cramer turns on the two kings of AI — Jim Cramer, CNBC, via 24/7 Wall St. (2026-09-17)

Cramer criticized Anthropic and OpenAI for calling for regulation while accelerating development. He still expects the buildout to continue and pointed to infrastructure beneficiaries — silicon, equipment, construction, and power — rather than the model developers themselves.

An economic boom Wall Street isn’t pricing in — Cathie Wood, ARK Invest, via 24/7 Wall St. (2026-09-13)

Wood argues five converging technologies could double global GDP growth from ~3% to 6%+. Relevant to today’s tape: she names energy capacity as the binding constraint, estimating data centers could consume 12% of U.S. electrical capacity by 2028 — the same thesis the House vote just put a price tag on.

Market Outlook

Markets spent Wednesday afternoon selling a hawkish dot plot and Thursday morning deciding they’d overreacted: the S&P gapped up 1.1% at the open on soft jobless claims and a strong Philadelphia Fed print, then traded flat for the entire session while the VIX collapsed 12.8% to 15.44. The composition matters more than the magnitude — the NASDAQ nearly tripled the Dow’s gain, and the leadership was in the highest-beta corners of the watchlist, with nuclear developers, AI server hardware, and a turnaround semiconductor all posting high-single to double-digit gains. That is a market treating 3.75%–4.00% as close to the ceiling rather than a waypoint, an interpretation the dot plot explicitly does not endorse. The tension worth watching is that breakeven inflation eased to 2.33% and crude has fallen three sessions running even as the Fed says inflation is too high — if that disinflationary evidence holds, the implied October hike gets harder to justify; if it doesn’t, today’s multiple expansion was borrowed against a pause that never arrives. The October 27–28 meeting is 40 days out, which leaves a full CPI and PCE cycle to settle the argument.
