Breaking News & Macro Events

Traders raise October hike odds as the 10-year touches 5.00% — Yahoo Finance

The 10-year Treasury yield rose about 5bp to 5.00%, its highest of the week, as traders increased bets on a follow-up hike at the October meeting. This is the market walking back Thursday’s interpretation of Wednesday’s 25bp hike to 3.75%–4.00% as a one-and-done adjustment. Notably, the VIX fell another 4.1% to 14.81 on the same day — the rates market and the volatility market are telling different stories about the same Fed.

Bank of Japan hikes to a 31-year high

The BoJ raised its policy rate to the highest level in 31 years, a move that supported global equities on the read that the tightening is a growth signal rather than a shock. The yen did not cooperate: USD/JPY still rose 0.55% to 156.80, a classic sell-the-news reaction that leaves the carry trade largely intact.

Crude eases as Middle East supply fears unwind — Trading Economics

Brent has come off Tuesday’s four-month high near $108.75 as the market prices in gradually increasing flows through the Strait of Hormuz and alternative export routes. Constraints are expected to persist into year-end, keeping regional production below pre-conflict averages until Q2 2027 — so this is fear draining out, not a supply glut arriving. Crude cooling is the single most helpful development for a Fed that just hiked on inflation.

  • News: UBS cut its price target to $42 from $48, keeping a Neutral rating — analyst Jay Sole’s channel checks show global sales growth deteriorating over the past three months, and UBS now expects Nike to miss fiscal Q1 2027 by roughly five cents. Separately, Kylian Mbappé departed for On Holding, a visible defection in a category Nike is supposed to own. The stock hit its 52-week low amid broad consumer-discretionary weakness. A 4.51% yield on a name making new lows two weeks before earnings is the definition of a value trap question.

META — Meta Platforms ($665.75, -2.43%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-28 (40 days away)
  • 52W Range: $520.26 — $790.80
  • News: The weakest megacap on the day, and the only one of the group to fall meaningfully. Pullback follows a strong month; no confirmed company-specific catalyst.

MSTR — Strategy ($153.92, +16.39%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-10-29 (41 days away)
  • 52W Range: $81.81 — $365.21
  • News: Bitcoin’s 6.0% jump to $81,010 drove the move, amplified by the company’s leveraged treasury structure — roughly 2.7x the move in the underlying asset. The stock remains 58% below its 52-week high, which is the whole story of what leverage does in both directions.

NNE — Nano Nuclear Energy ($15.73, -7.31%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-08-12 (reported)

  • Earnings: 2026-11-10 (53 days away)
  • 52W Range: $34.38 — $193.84
  • News: Reversed after Thursday’s +11.31% policy-driven pop. 24/7 Wall St. described the nuclear group as trading on “sector positioning rather than a company-specific problem” — a policy rally handing back gains rather than a lasting re-rating.

RKLB — Rocket Lab USA ($64.57, -4.79%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-09 (52 days away)
  • 52W Range: $37.57 — $151.00
  • News: No company-specific catalyst identified. Gave back most of yesterday’s +6.47% alongside the rest of the high-beta complex.

SMR — NuScale Power ($8.27, -8.52%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-05 (48 days away)
  • 52W Range: $7.21 — $57.42
  • News: The worst performer on the watchlist, erasing yesterday’s +8.92%. The sector piece frames Friday’s fade as evidence Thursday’s enthusiasm “was tactical.” The stock is now 86% below its 52-week high and 15% off the low.

SMCI — Super Micro Computer ($39.09, -3.12%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-03 (46 days away)

  • Earnings: 2026-11-03 (46 days away)
  • 52W Range: $40.77 — $104.32
  • News: Pulled back after a sharp multi-day rally that included yesterday’s +14.85%. The run followed CEO Eric Lefkofsky’s reimbursement commentary at the Morgan Stanley conference on September 15 and an FDA approval for a tumor-only version of its solid-tumor assay. Today was profit-taking, not new information.

TSM — Taiwan Semiconductor ($434.67, +1.02%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-15 (27 days away)

A note on the oil prices above. Both crude contracts rolled today. WTI’s front month moved from October to November and Brent’s from November to December, which makes the raw screen price drop roughly $6 (WTI from $101.91 to $95.44) without oil itself falling anywhere near that much. Measured within a single contract, the expiring October WTI settled at $99.41 (-2.45%) and November Brent at $103.05 (-1.69%); the new front months fell 1.84% and 1.20%. The oil ETFs confirm the smaller move — USO fell 0.96% and BNO 0.56%. Yesterday’s digest quoted WTI at $101.26 on the October contract, so the table above is not comparable to it directly.

Notable Voices

It’s not clear to me we’ve slayed inflation — Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase, Yahoo Finance (2026-09-17)

Dimon responded to the Fed’s first hike in three years by declining to call the inflation fight over, extending a warning he has repeated for years — he labelled inflation the “skunk at the party” in his April shareholder letter. Coming from the CEO of the largest US bank the day after the FOMC, it lands as a vote for the hawkish read of the dot plot. He separately argued AI oversight “should be light touch” at the federal level, to avoid a patchwork of state rules.

This market has eerie parallels with 2018 — Jim Cramer, CNBC (2026-09-11)

Cramer’s checklist — second year of a Trump presidency, a strong preceding rally, oil above $100, the 10-year at 5%, inflation above target — is a week old and describes today’s tape precisely. In late 2018 that combination preceded a roughly 20% S&P decline from the September peak to Christmas Eve. His conclusion is not to sell everything but to trim winners and raise cash. The wildcard he flags is Fed leadership: Chair Kevin Warsh is viewed as less committed to the inflation fight than Powell was in 2018.

Short rates could top 7% — Cathie Wood, ARK Invest, ABC News (2026-09-16)

Wood argues AI is inherently deflationary through productivity gains, and that this produces “good deflation” alongside an economic boom rather than the demand-collapse kind. The counterintuitive corollary: she expects short rates to approximate nominal GDP growth, as they did during the industrial revolution, which could push them toward 7%. ARK’s framework has nominal GDP running 6–8% on 5–7% productivity growth, 1% labor force growth, and inflation between -2% and +1%. It is the most aggressive case on this list for why high rates and rising equities can coexist.

The Buffett indicator is at a record — Berkshire Hathaway valuation signal (2026-09)

The US-stocks-to-GDP ratio has reached record territory, though published readings disagree meaningfully — sources this month cite figures between 232% and 244%. Buffett’s own long-stated benchmark is that approaching 200% means investors are “playing with fire.” Berkshire closed Q1 2026 with a record $397.4 billion in cash and short-term Treasuries, up from $373 billion at the end of 2025, and remained a net seller of equities under Greg Abel. Note this is the signal talking, not fresh commentary from Buffett himself.

Market Outlook

The indices finished mixed and nearly unchanged — NASDAQ +0.39%, S&P 500 +0.17%, Dow -0.18% — but that calm surface concealed one of the sharpest rotations of the month, with the 10-year yield climbing 5bp to 5.00% as traders raised the odds of another hike in October. Beneath the flat tape, Thursday’s speculative leaders handed back nearly everything: NuScale fell 8.5% after rising 8.9%, Nano Nuclear fell 7.3% after rising 8.5%, Oklo gave back 4.2% of an 11.3% gain, and Tempus AI dropped 3.1% after a 14.9% surge, while Bitcoin’s 6.0% move to $81,010 pulled Strategy up 16.4% and Circle up 7.9%. Risk appetite did not leave the market today, it relocated — which is a more fragile condition than either broad buying or broad selling, and it is exactly what a market does when it cannot decide whether 3.75%–4.00% is a ceiling or a waypoint. The tension worth watching is that a 5.00% 10-year and a 14.81 VIX cannot both be right about the same Fed, and with Nike closing at a new 52-week low and crude easing on unwinding supply fears, the disinflation-versus-tightening argument is now being settled one sector at a time. Next week brings no CPI or PCE print, so the October 27–28 meeting will be priced mostly off jobless claims, flash PMIs, and durable goods — thin evidence for a decision this consequential.
