Overnight Developments

A broad, synchronized risk-on move across every major region. Three drivers, in order of weight:

Oil retreats below $100 on Hormuz supply recovery — Yahoo Finance

Front-month WTI is down ~3.2% to $92.98, extending a multi-day slide as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz picks up and diplomatic prospects improve. Falling crude is the cleanest inflation-relief signal available right now, and it is doing the heavy lifting for equities. Affected sectors: Energy (negative), Tech, Consumer, Financials (positive)

US–China trade optimism ahead of Thursday’s Trump–Xi summit — Yahoo Finance

Treasury Secretary Bessent described preliminary talks with his Chinese counterpart as “very successful” and floated a new US–China AI dialogue centered on national-security concerns. The presidents meet Thursday, Sept 24, with Jensen Huang and Sam Altman among the tech executives attending a dinner with the Chinese president. This is the most direct tailwind for semis and AI infrastructure. Affected sectors: Semiconductors, Tech, Manufacturing

Bitcoin clears $84,000

BTC trades at $84,511, up ~5%, after breaking $80,000 on Friday. That single fact explains the two largest watchlist movers this morning. Affected sectors: Crypto, Fintech

The counterweight: the Fed hiked 25bp on Sept 16, moving the target range to 3.75%–4.00% (confirmed via FRED). Traders are pricing the possibility of further hikes and bond yields are rising. Today’s rally is happening despite a hawkish Fed, not because of one — which makes it more fragile than the breadth suggests.

S&P 5007,766.50+0.70%
NASDAQ30,249.25+1.11%
DOW52,493+0.80%

Note: Friday was September quad-witching expiry. These quotes are the December contract measured against Friday’s December settle. Continuous front-month feeds (ES=F/NQ=F/YM=F) are mid-roll this morning and are understating the move by roughly half — cross-checked against SPY +0.67%, QQQ +0.96%, DIA +0.81% in pre-market trade.

Watchlist Movers

  • MSTR +5.55% — Bitcoin above $84k; the stock already jumped ~16% Friday as BTC cleared $80,000
  • INTC +5.43% — no verified Monday-specific catalyst; extends a strong run (+18.5% over ten sessions) on AI/semi momentum and US–China summit optimism
  • CRCL +4.66% — moving with the broader crypto/stablecoin complex alongside bitcoin strength
  • SMCI +3.45% — AI server/infrastructure beta; no confirmed fresh company news
  • NNE +3.05% — nuclear/AI-power sector bounce after a weak stretch (−4.1% over five sessions)
  • SMR +3.02% — same nuclear bounce; also down over the prior five sessions, so this is a rebound rather than a new catalyst

Reported reasons for INTC, SMCI, NNE and SMR that circulated this morning traced back to April 2026 announcements (the Intel–Google AI partnership and Musk’s Terafab project) and did not survive date-checking. Treat these four as sector beta unless news confirms otherwise at the open.

International Markets

Asia and Europe rallied in unison: Nikkei +1.44%, Hang Seng +1.18%, Shanghai +0.91%, DAX +1.14%, FTSE 100 +0.97%. Gold slipped 0.90% to $4,385 and VIX sits near 15 — the risk-premium unwind is showing up everywhere at once, which is consistent with the oil and trade-diplomacy story rather than a single-market idiosyncratic bid.

What to Watch at Open

Watch whether crude keeps sliding — this entire rally is built on oil-driven inflation relief colliding with a Fed that just hiked, so a reversal in energy would pull the floor out. Semis and AI infrastructure are the highest-beta expression of Thursday’s Trump–Xi summit, and the nuclear names bouncing this morning have no confirmed catalyst behind them.
