Dow slips, Nasdaq drifts higher as oil falls, AI trade powers market — Yahoo Finance

The S&P 500 finished dead flat while the Nasdaq posted a second straight record close and the Dow slipped 0.36%, extending a divergence that has opened up between the blue-chip index and the rest of the market over recent sessions. Crude drove the tape again. Iran told Kyodo News it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if Washington takes initial steps to ease military pressure, and November WTI fell about 3% within an hour of the report around 04:00 ET. The round trip came at midday. In his UN General Assembly address, Trump said “we’ll make a deal right after the election,” pushing a settlement past November’s midterms, and Brent climbed back to about $100 before fading into the close. He also said he would support banning US diesel exports, and Treasury Secretary Bessent said he is studying whether that is feasible, with pump diesel already at a record $6.52 a gallon.

Trump says US held ‘very productive’ three-hour meeting with Iran — Al Arabiya

Later in the session Trump disclosed that envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had held a three-hour meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s delegation in New York, with Qatar’s prime minister present for most of it, and said another meeting is planned soon. Tehran’s stated conditions are the immediate lifting of the naval blockade and release of frozen assets. No agreement was reached on most disputes. For oil, this is the first direct US–Iran contact of the nearly seven-month war, and it is why crude closed lower despite the midday bounce.

Fed context: Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin said Tuesday that the “‘passing’ shocks aren’t proving to be short-lived, or one-off events,” defending last week’s hike to 3.75%–4.00% and leaving the door open to more. Williams and Jefferson also spoke today at the New York Fed’s Treasury Markets Conference.

Notable Voices

Jamie Dimon says hyperscaler AI spending could hit $1 trillion next year — Jamie Dimon, CNBC (2026-09-22)

Speaking to CNBC-TV18 at JPMorgan’s India Conference, Dimon said hyperscaler-ecosystem spending has more than doubled from about $300B last year to about $700B this year. He called that “like 1% increase to GDP each year” and said it “may add a little bit to inflation.” He warned there “may be a market correction” without being sure AI would cause it, said capital demand from infrastructure, remilitarization, and deficits may be pushing rates higher, and cautioned that inflation “may even go up a little bit.” He urged the US and China to “fully engage” on trade, AI, and security at this week’s summit.

Market has ‘all the ingredients for a face ripper’, says Fundstrat’s Tom Lee — Tom Lee, CNBC (2026-09-21)

On Power Lunch during Monday’s surge, Lee argued the rally has staying power and that positioning is set up for a sharp move higher. That has been his thesis since late August, when he called September a strong month for stocks. Today’s flat S&P 500 is the first test of it.

Market Outlook

Tuesday was a digestion day: the S&P 500 closed unchanged and the Nasdaq added 0.45% to a second straight record, as November WTI fell 2.7% to $89.86 on Iran’s conditional offer to reopen Hormuz and a first direct three-hour US–Iran meeting in New York. The intraday round trip in crude is the more useful signal. Brent recovered to about $100 when Trump pushed a deal past the midterms and then gave it back, which suggests oil is now trading headline to headline rather than on a settled view, and equities are borrowing that volatility. Barkin’s warning that “passing” shocks aren’t passing, alongside Dimon’s view that AI capex is itself inflationary, is a reminder that the Fed’s hiking bias doesn’t depend on crude alone. With AAPL, NVDA, and META all within 4.5% of their 52-week highs, the cushion is thin heading into Wednesday’s flash PMIs and Thursday’s stacked Trump–Xi summit and Costco earnings, which together will show whether this rally rests on growth or just on cheaper oil.
