Overnight Developments
Iran offers to reopen Strait of Hormuz within seven days if US eases military pressure — Kyodo News (via SBS)
A senior Iranian government official told Kyodo that Tehran has proposed, through a mediator, to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week if Washington takes initial steps to reduce military pressure — specifically moving toward ending the blockade of Iranian ports and halting operations around the strait. The stated goal is to revive stalled end-of-war negotiations. The same official ruled out a Pezeshkian–Trump meeting on the sidelines of this week’s UN General Assembly, so a quick handshake is off the table. No US response yet.
Crude broke sharply lower on the report at roughly 04:00 ET, one discontinuous step on a volume spike across every contract month. Against Monday’s settlement, November WTI is -3.2% to ~$89.40 (from $92.37) and November Brent is -2.7% to ~$97.60 (from $100.34). This extends the Hormuz-driven slide that took WTI below $100 last week — Monday’s alert covered improving tanker traffic; today’s move is a formal diplomatic offer, which is a different and larger signal. Gold barely moved (-0.4%), so this is an oil story, not a broad risk-off/on rotation.
Affected sectors: Energy (producers, refiners, oilfield services), Airlines & Transports (fuel-cost relief), Shipping/Tankers, Defense.
Futures & Pre-Market
Changes are measured against Monday’s settlement, using the December contracts (the front-month roll is complete).
| Index | Futures | Change |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,843.50 | +0.13% |
| NASDAQ | 30,833.00 | +0.16% |
| DOW | 52,647 | +0.33% |
Equity futures are essentially flat after Monday’s surge to record highs — the Hormuz offer is being priced in oil, not in stocks, at least so far. SPY/QQQ/DIA pre-market bars confirm the same picture (+0.1% / +0.1% / +0.3%).
Watchlist Movers
No watchlist name is moving more than 3% pre-market. The largest moves, all on thin pre-market volume:
- RKLB +2.6% — follow-through, not a new catalyst; the most recent coverage is Monday’s, on Saturday’s 96th Electron launch and Cantor’s initiation. Nothing dated today.
- MSTR -1.4% — tracking bitcoin, which is down about 1.2% since Monday’s US close.
- NKE +1.0%, GOOG +0.7%, AMZN +0.6% — modest bids in line with the Dow-led tone.
- TSM -0.7% — the only large-cap tech name in the red.
International Markets
Japan is closed for a three-day holiday stretch (Respect for the Aged Day, bridge holiday, Autumnal Equinox), so there is no Nikkei read today. Hang Seng +0.2% and Shanghai flat (+0.1%). Europe is modestly higher with the DAX +0.5%, Euro Stoxx 50 +0.4%, and the energy-heavy FTSE lagging at +0.2%.
What to Watch at Open
Watch whether energy weakness stays contained or bleeds into the broader tape — with crude down 3% overnight on Iran’s conditional Hormuz offer and equity futures flat, the open will tell us if this is sector rotation or a new leg for the rally. Any US response to Tehran’s proposal during UN General Assembly week is the swing factor for oil from here.
