Breaking News & Macro Events

The Economy Is Booming, So the Market Indexes Fell — The Motley Fool

Good news was bad news. S&P Global’s flash composite PMI jumped to 58.4 in September, the highest since July 2021, with new orders at their strongest since March 2022 and input prices spiking to 66.4. Bonds sold off hard: the 10-year yield reached 5.087% intraday (last seen July 2007) and the 5-year crossed 5% for the first time since 2007. Futures now put October rate-hike odds above 73%, up from 55% a day earlier. Rate-sensitive small caps took the brunt, with the Russell 2000 down 1.8%.

US S&P Global Composite PMI came in at 58.4 in September — FXStreet

Manufacturing printed 57.0 (Aug 53.9, consensus 53.5) and services 58.7 (Aug 54.6, consensus 56.0). S&P Global’s Chris Williamson said output is growing at the fastest pace in over five years, pointing to roughly 5% annualized growth and a 4% gain for Q3 as a whole. That is the growth backdrop the Fed hiked into on September 16, and today’s data makes another move in October the base case.

Layered on the rates shock, President Trump said he faces “a big decision” on Iran between negotiations and military action ahead of Xi Jinping’s state visit tomorrow. Expiring November Brent squeezed +5.1% to $103.64 while WTI rose 3.3%. The MBA 30-year mortgage rate moved to 7.12% from 6.97%. McDonald’s fell 4.8% after setting long-term growth targets.

Google faces UK push to put AI assistants on Android, Chrome choice screens — Reuters

The UK Competition and Markets Authority published strengthened proposals requiring Google to show a search-provider choice screen on Android setup and Chrome first-open, re-prompt annually, and admit qualifying AI assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity) to those screens. Consultation runs to October 9 with a final decision expected by year-end. Alphabet was the worst large-cap tech performer today (see GOOG below).

Notable Voices

Jamie Dimon says hyperscaler AI spending could hit $1 trillion next year — Jamie Dimon, CNBC (2026-09-21)

The JPMorgan CEO estimates hyperscaler AI capex has more than doubled from roughly $300B last year to $700B this year and could reach $1 trillion in 2027. He frames it as a genuine growth impulse that is also adding to inflation, which dovetails with today’s PMI input-price spike and the bond market’s reaction.

‘Shall we repeal the law of economics’: Howard Marks on the economy, the deficit and more — Howard Marks, CNBC (2026-09-22)

The Oaktree co-chair argues that pushing down long-term borrowing costs by fiat won’t work while inflation, a deficit near 6% of GDP, and heavy capital demand keep pushing yields up. He puts net interest costs above $1 trillion this year and calls for fiscal discipline and revenue measures. A day later the 10-year traded through 5.1%.

Market Outlook

The tape delivered a textbook “good news is bad news” session: a blowout flash PMI (composite 58.4, the strongest since 2021) sent the 10-year through 5.1% for the first time since 2007 and pushed October hike odds above 70%, dragging the S&P 500 down 0.75% and the Russell 2000 down 1.8% while gold fell 1.7% and the dollar firmed. The damage was concentrated in duration-sensitive corners of our list — six watchlist names dropped more than 3%, led by HIMS (-6.7%), OKLO (-4.0%) and GOOG (-3.6%), the last of those on an AI-rotation story toward Meta rather than the macro. A crude rally into the Iran “big decision” and the expiring November Brent contract squeezing to $103.64 add an inflation impulse the Fed cannot ignore, and Howard Marks’s point that yields respond to deficits and capital demand, not wishes, looks prescient tonight. Near term, Costco’s report tomorrow after the close and the Trump–Xi summit in Washington are the catalysts to watch; further out, the September 30 PCE print will determine whether a 5%-plus 10-year is a ceiling or a way station.
