Breaking News & Macro Events
Oil slides as US–Iran talks point toward a Hormuz reopening — Transport Topics
Crude snapped a two-day rally on reports that Washington and Tehran are weighing a phased deal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the US blockade on Iranian ports. Front-month Brent fell 1.9% and WTI 2.0%, unwinding part of this week’s risk premium. Renewed Houthi strikes on Saudi targets, including Yanbu and Taif, keep the downside capped — this is a de-escalation trade, not a resolution.
Consumer sentiment stays near record lows even as durable goods hold up — Trading Economics
The final September University of Michigan sentiment reading came in at 48.1, up from the 47.6 preliminary but far below August’s 51.7. Year-ahead inflation expectations jumped to 4.6% from 4.0%. Durable goods orders were flat at 0.0% versus a -0.4% consensus, and core capital goods orders (non-defense ex-air) rose 1.6% against a 0.5% forecast — business capex is holding while household mood deteriorates.
Fed’s first hike since 2023 still setting the tone — CNBC
Nine days on, the September 16 decision remains the dominant macro variable. The FOMC raised the target range 25bp to 3.75%–4.00% in a unanimous vote under new Chair Kevin Warsh, and the dot plot showed 16 of 18 participants expecting at least one more increase this year. With 10-year yields at 5.18% and breakevens easing to 2.33%, the market is accepting the hiking path without repricing inflation expectations higher.

- News: Bank of America cuts Nike to Underperform — BofA’s Lorraine Hutchinson downgraded from Neutral to Underperform and slashed her target to $30 from $47, cutting FY27 and FY28 EPS estimates 11% and 12%. Her case: the turnaround is taking longer than expected, and lifestyle-category weakness is outrunning gains from new launches. The stock is sitting on its 52-week low six days ahead of earnings.
PFE — Pfizer Inc. ($28.67, +0.92%) ⚠️

- The day’s worst watchlist performer, and notably without an identifiable company-specific catalyst — traded from $94.10 down to $87.59 intraday. Worth watching whether this is stablecoin-sector positioning rather than news.
GOOG — Alphabet Inc. ($341.08, +0.61%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-28 (33 days away)
- 52W Range: $236.68 — $404.47

- Earnings: 2026-10-22 (27 days away)
- 52W Range: $32.89 — $142.35
- News: Profit-taking follows a 223% YTD run — the pullback that began mid-week extended into Friday, with no fundamental catalyst beyond the scale of the move itself. A secondary drag: Apple told Mac App Store developers they may drop support for Intel-based Macs in apps requiring macOS 13 or later. (Source dated 2026-09-24; Intel reversed to close higher that day and the selling landed today.)
META — Meta Platforms ($751.66, -3.33%) ⚠️
- Earnings: 2026-10-28 (33 days away)
- 52W Range: $520.26 — $779.82 (3.6% off 52W high) ⚠️
- News: Goldman Sachs questions hyperscaler AI economics — Goldman estimates hyperscalers need roughly $300B annually just to break even on AI capex, and $1 trillion a year to earn a meaningful return, against $800B of industry spend this year and $1.1T projected for next. Meta gave back most of yesterday’s 4.5% gain. Note the whiplash: the same capex that was bullish 24 hours ago on the “Muse” AI agent is bearish today.
MSTR — Strategy ($158.61, -1.86%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-29 (34 days away)
- 52W Range: $81.81 — $365.21

- Shrugged off the Goldman capex note that hit Meta — the picks-and-shovels trade still gets the benefit of the doubt.
OKLO — Oklo Inc. ($38.04, -0.65%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-10 (46 days away)
- 52W Range: $34.38 — $193.84
RKLB — Rocket Lab USA ($73.95, +0.46%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-09 (45 days away)
- 52W Range: $37.57 — $151.00
- News: Iridium stockholders approve the Rocket Lab acquisition — approval came with 99.6% of votes cast in favor, representing about 81% of shares outstanding. Iridium holders receive $27.00 in cash plus a collared share exchange, a notional $54.00 per share. Closing is expected by mid-2027, pending remaining regulatory approvals. Announced after Thursday’s close, which is where most of the reaction landed.
SMCI — Super Micro Computer ($43.26, +4.22%) ⚠️
- Earnings: 2026-11-03 (39 days away)
- 52W Range: $19.48 — $58.78
- News: Supermicro now shipping NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 racks — each rack pairs 72 Rubin GPUs with 36 Vera CPUs under the company’s DLC-2 direct liquid cooling stack, scaling to 1,152 GPUs per unit. Announced 2026-09-23, so today’s move looks like momentum building on the news rather than a same-day reaction. The stock is 33% above its 200-day average.
SMR — NuScale Power ($8.42, -0.59%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-05 (41 days away)

- Earnings: 2026-11-03 (39 days away)
- 52W Range: $40.77 — $104.32
- Second strong session in a row after yesterday’s 7.4% gain, with no fresh news today. The pending $1.5B Personalis acquisition — announced back in July, expected to close late 2026 or early 2027 — remains the structural story.
TSM — Taiwan Semiconductor ($450.61, -0.12%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-15 (20 days away)
- 52W Range: $266.82 — $479.00

Brent rolled its front month from November to December today, five sessions behind WTI. Continuous quotes show an apparent 7–8% Brent collapse that is entirely a contract switch — both months are listed above to make the real move visible. November Brent still carries a ~$7 premium to December as it runs into its expiry.
The yen was the day’s notable FX mover, firming 1% against the dollar and doing most of the work in the DXY’s decline.
Market Outlook
Equities closed a constructive week with the Dow up 0.93% and the VIX back to 14.87, as falling crude and signs of a phased US–Iran arrangement drained some of the geopolitical premium that has defined September. The internals were less uniform than the headline suggests: Goldman’s warning that hyperscalers need roughly $1 trillion a year to earn a real return on AI capex knocked Meta down 3.3% a day after the same spending was celebrated, while NVIDIA and TSMC held firm — the market is starting to separate the companies selling AI infrastructure from those buying it. That divergence sits uneasily alongside a consumer reading of 48.1 with 4.6% year-ahead inflation expectations, a combination that gives the Warsh Fed little room to soften its stance before October 27. Next week’s Core PCE on September 30 and the September payrolls print on October 2 will do more to set the tone than anything in this week’s tape, and a Chicago PMI consensus of 46.9 against a 51.3 prior warrants attention as an early crack in the activity data.
