Akamai signs $11.6 billion, seven-year cloud infrastructure deal with Anthropic — Yahoo Finance

Announced at 4:01 PM ET Thursday, minutes after the close: Akamai will supply Anthropic with cloud infrastructure under $11.6 billion of contractual commitment over seven years, expandable by up to another $9 billion for a total potential commitment of roughly $20 billion. Akamai also issued Anthropic a warrant for non-voting convertible preferred representing 7.7 million shares — about 5% of shares outstanding — at an exercise price of $111.33, struck essentially at Thursday’s $110.41 close. Akamai is indicated +19.3% at $131.66 in pre-market trade.

This is the catalyst behind the Nasdaq’s outperformance. It re-rates the “AI capacity landlord” trade beyond the hyperscalers — a CDN operator just booked an AI commitment worth more than three times its trailing annual revenue, and the warrant structure hands the customer equity upside rather than cash. Affected sectors: Tech, Cloud Infrastructure, Semiconductors, AI

No new macro or geopolitical shock overnight

The Trump–Xi summit, the tariff-truce extension to January 10, and the 10-year’s push to 5.162% were all Thursday’s business and are already in the tape. No central bank surprises, no new tariff or sanctions action, and no escalation overnight. Crude is giving back a slice of Thursday’s surge — November WTI -1.8% at $92.94 and November Brent -1.0% at $105.52 — which is a modest tailwind for risk, not a story in itself.

Futures & Pre-Market

IndexFuturesChange%
S&P 5007,785.50+18.50+0.24%
NASDAQ30,924.75+158.00+0.51%
DOW51,800.00+83.00+0.16%

Tech-led and orderly. The Nasdaq is doing roughly twice the S&P’s work and three times the Dow’s — a single-name AI catalyst propagating through the complex, not a broad risk-on impulse.

Watchlist Movers

None above the 3% threshold. The watchlist is quiet and skewed slightly green:

  • NNE +2.0% · SMCI +1.6% · SMR +1.5% · INTC +1.3% · RKLB +1.3% · MSTR +1.2% · OKLO +1.2% · TSM +0.9%
  • NKE -1.8% — the weakest name, but on no overnight news. Nike’s fiscal Q1 report lands October 1; the $30 Underperform circulating in commentary is BMO’s initiation from September 9–10, not a fresh call.

The nuclear and AI-infrastructure names drifting higher together fits the Akamai read-through: more contracted AI compute implies more contracted power.

International Markets

Japan led Asia — the Nikkei closed +1.30% at 66,364.20, its first full session after the three-day holiday cluster, catching up to the US tape. Hong Kong lagged at -1.01% (24,510.09). Mainland China is closed Friday through Sunday for the Mid-Autumn Festival, with Stock Connect shut in both directions — cross-border flows are off the board today, and a week-long Golden Week break follows. Europe is firm but unhurried: DAX +0.57%, FTSE 100 +0.14%.

What to Watch at Open

The Akamai-Anthropic deal is the tape’s driver, so watch whether the bid broadens past AI infrastructure or stays penned into that one complex — a Nasdaq that holds +0.5% while the Dow lags all morning tells you this is a single-story rally, not a regime change. Two data points can interrupt it: Durable Goods Orders for August at 8:30 AM ET (consensus -0.4%) and the final September Michigan Consumer Sentiment at 10:00 AM ET, either of which could put the 10-year back on offer after Thursday’s 5.162% close.
