Crude Spikes on Hormuz Impasse, Then Gives Most of It Back — CNBC

President Trump rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, and crude gapped higher overnight — November WTI was up 4.1% and November Brent 4.0% before the US open. The move faded through the session: November WTI settled at $92.87 (+0.50%) and November Brent at $105.87 (+1.49%).

That round trip is the day’s most important tell. The spike rested on a policy headline rather than a supply disruption, and it unwound almost as fast as it arrived — but not before it did real damage to the rates complex.

Yields Hit a 19-Year High, and Gold Pays for It

The 10-year Treasury yield rose 6 basis points to 5.24% — a level last seen in June 2007. The mechanism is straightforward: higher crude feeds inflation expectations, which feed Fed hike odds, which lift the long end.

Precious metals took the hit. Gold fell -3.83% to $4,155.90, its lowest close since August 4, and silver dropped -4.76% to $61.19. This was a rates-driven selloff, not a risk-appetite story — which is why it happened on a day when equities were also lower.

Fed Hike Odds Firm for October

The Fed raised its target range to 3.75%–4.00% on September 16, the first increase since 2023. Futures now price roughly 65–70% odds of another 25bp hike at the October 27–28 meeting. With oil injecting fresh inflation risk, that probability is the single most important number in the market right now.

  • News: BofA cut Nike to Underperform, price target $47 → $30 (Sept 26) — analyst Lorraine Hutchinson trimmed FY27/FY28 EPS by 11% and 12%, arguing weakness in lifestyle categories outweighs new product launches and pushing a real top-line recovery into fiscal 2028. Her FY27 numbers imply a payout ratio near 107% — earnings would not cover the dividend. Today’s +1.79% bounce is off a 52-week low, not a vote of confidence.

INTC — Intel Corporation ($116.03, -5.67%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-10-22 (24 days away)
  • 52W Range: $32.89 — $142.35
  • News: Second straight down day after a violent run — Intel ripped from roughly $92 in early September to $123 by the 25th. Apple is now letting Mac App Store developers drop Intel Mac support on macOS 13+ apps, shrinking the legacy footprint further, but the size of today’s move looks more like the long side unwinding a crowded, extended trade than a reaction to that headline.

META — Meta Platforms ($715.62, -4.79%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-10-28 (30 days away) — consensus $6.74 EPS
  • 52W Range: $520.26 — $779.82
  • News: A New Mexico jury found Facebook liable Friday for more than 43 million violations of state consumer protection law over Cambridge Analytica–era privacy claims. At up to $5,000 per violation with the AG pushing for the maximum, theoretical exposure runs past $200 billion — the judge still has to set penalties. That is a genuine overhang landing on a stock that had just rallied hard, and today was its second heavy down day.
  • Separately, Meta launched an enterprise AI platform and acquired Stilla.ai, hiring ex-MongoDB president CJ Desai as chief enterprise platform officer. The market ignored it.

MSTR — Strategy ($157.14, -0.93%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-29 (31 days away)
  • 52W Range: $81.81 — $365.21

NNE — Nano Nuclear Energy ($16.16, -4.89%) ⚠️

  • 52W Range: $14.71 — $60.87
  • News: No company-specific catalyst identified. Caught in the rate-driven nuclear selloff.

NVDA — NVIDIA Corporation ($228.86, +1.68%)

  • Earnings: 2026-11-17 (50 days away)
  • 52W Range: $164.27 — $236.54 (within 4% of the 52-week high) ⚠️
  • News: The only large-cap with a real bid today. NVIDIA’s board approved an additional $150 billion for its buyback program, bringing remaining authorization to $235 billion — the largest single buyback authorization increase ever announced by a public company, expected to run through fiscal 2028. That is roughly 4% of its $5.4 trillion market value.

OKLO — Oklo Inc. ($37.11, -2.44%)

  • Earnings: 2026-11-10 (43 days away)
  • 52W Range: $34.38 — $193.84
  • News: Down roughly 51% year-to-date. Q2 revenue of $1.2M against a $48.5M net loss.

RKLB — Rocket Lab USA ($72.19, -2.38%)

SMCI — Super Micro Computer ($41.78, -3.42%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-03 (36 days away)
  • 52W Range: $19.48 — $58.78
  • News: Sold off with the AI hardware complex despite shipping NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 racks.

SMR — NuScale Power ($7.91, -6.06%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-11-05 (38 days away)
  • 52W Range: $7.21 — $57.42
  • News: The worst performer on the watchlist, and now within 10% of its 52-week low. UBS cut NuScale to Sell, price target $10 → $6, citing long build timelines, weak customer visibility, and heavy cash burn; Pomerantz LLP has since opened a securities-fraud investigation. The fundamentals are stark — $75,000 of Q2 revenue against a share count near 365 million and a new $750M share-sale program. Down about 48% year-to-date.

SOFI — SoFi Technologies ($15.93, -3.92%) ⚠️

  • Earnings: 2026-10-27 (29 days away)
  • 52W Range: $14.88 — $32.73
  • News: Rising yields hammered rate-sensitive fintech across the board — Affirm -4%, Robinhood -2%. An insider Form 144 filing added to the pressure. Down roughly 40% year-to-date.

Notable Voices

Nvidia buyback plan a “genius move” — Dan Ives, Yorkville Ives & Co. on CNBC Closing Bell (Sept 28)

Ives called NVIDIA’s historic buyback increase a “genius move,” reading it as a statement about the company’s cash position and strategic footing at a moment when elevated yields are compressing valuations across the rest of tech.

Expect growth north of 7% over the next 3–5 years — Cathie Wood, ARK Invest on CNBC Squawk Box (Sept 25)

Wood argued the US economy is a “coiled spring” after a period of rolling recessions, expecting growth above 7% over three to five years on deregulation, lower taxes, and the AI buildout. Worth weighing against the tape: her thesis requires the long end to cooperate, and today it did the opposite.

Market Outlook

Equities fell across the board — S&P 500 -0.77%, NASDAQ -0.92% — but the index moves understate what actually happened underneath, where a 6bp rise in the 10-year to 5.24%, its highest since June 2007, did the real work. The chain ran from a geopolitical headline to the rates complex: crude spiked 4% overnight on the Hormuz impasse, faded to roughly flat by the close, and left behind firmer inflation expectations and 65–70% odds of an October Fed hike — enough to knock gold down 3.83% and to punish anything long-duration, with NuScale -6.1%, SoFi -3.92%, and the broader nuclear and fintech complexes leading the decline. The one genuine bid, NVIDIA’s +1.68% on a record $150 billion buyback increase, is itself a balance-sheet story rather than a growth story, which tells you what the market is willing to pay for right now. That a 4% oil spike could round-trip in a single session and still leave this much damage in rates suggests the market’s inflation sensitivity warrants attention well beyond the Iran headline. Friday’s September payrolls print is the next real test, with consensus at 90K against a prior 84K — a hot number would make the October hike close to a settled question.
