Breaking News & Macro Events
Consumer Confidence Falls to a 12-Year Low — CNBC / The Conference Board
The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index dropped 6.7 points to 81.9, its lowest reading since 2014. Economists polled by Reuters had looked for 89.2. The Present Situation Index fell 7.9 points to 109.3; the Expectations Index fell 5.9 points to 63.6, a third consecutive monthly decline.
Two details stand out. For the first time since the question was introduced four years ago, more respondents described their family’s finances as “bad” than “good,” and net views of current business conditions turned negative for the first time since September 2024. The Conference Board noted that write-in references to prices — oil and gas in particular — hit new highs.
JOLTS job openings reinforced it: 7.097 million in August against expectations of 7.228 million.
Weak Data, Higher Yields
Here is the day’s real puzzle. Demand data came in soft, and the long end sold off anyway. The 30-year Treasury yield closed at 5.59%, up 3bp, after touching 5.62% intraday — its highest since 2002. The 10-year added 2bp to 5.26%.
Soft consumer data would normally pull yields down. It didn’t. And the consumer’s stated grievance — fuel costs — was actively resolving today, with crude down almost 4%. When the long end rises through weak demand data and falling energy prices, the pressure is coming from term premium and supply, not from the growth outlook. That is a harder problem for equities than a simple inflation scare.
Crude Gives Back the Hormuz Premium — CNBC
November WTI fell -3.83% to $89.05 as Middle East supply came back online. Flows through Hormuz reached a seven-day average of 13.2 million bpd — about 77% of the 17 million bpd that transited before the US–Iran war, per Kpler — and Saudi Arabia resumed East-West pipeline exports.
This completes the round trip flagged yesterday: Monday’s 4% geopolitical spike faded intraday, and today the premium came out entirely.
Anthropic’s IPO Prospectus Leaks — Fortune / Reuters
A leaked prospectus obtained by Reuters put 2025 revenue at $4.59 billion, up roughly 1,088%, against a GAAP net loss of $41.97 billion (from $8.31 billion in 2024) and an operating loss near $8.06 billion. The filing discloses about $518 billion in future cloud and compute commitments, and notes that nearly 25% of revenue came from two customers. Expected valuation tops $2 trillion.
The prospectus also warns that the technology could pose a “catastrophic or existential risk to humanity” — unusual language for a risk-factors section.
It landed alongside news that OpenAI shelved GPT-6.1 Astra, a model slated for an October debut, after it fell short in internal alignment testing. Safety chief Saachi Jain confirmed the decision to the Wall Street Journal.
Two frontier labs signaling caution on the same day is a genuine sentiment event. Notably, the AI hardware complex barely flinched — NVIDIA -0.72%, TSMC +0.90%. The jitters stayed in the narrative and out of the tape.

Dividend Stocks
COST — Costco Wholesale ($924.59, +0.18%)
- Earnings: 2026-12-10 (72 days away)
- Dividend: Yield 0.64% | last ex-div 2026-07-23
- 52W Range: $844.06 — $1,096.50
NKE — Nike Inc. ($35.84, -1.51%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-01 (2 days away, after close) ⚠️ — consensus $0.43 EPS on $11.3B revenue. Nike confirmed a 1:15pm PT release with a 2:00pm PT call.
- Dividend: Yield 4.51% | dividend payable 2026-09-30
- 52W Range: $35.22 — $76.97 (within 2% of the 52-week low) ⚠️
- Setup: Short interest sits at a record 87 million shares. Yesterday’s bounce off the low gave way today, and the stock goes into Thursday’s print at the bottom of its range with the most crowded short base in its history — a combination that makes the reaction more violent than the number itself warrants, in either direction.
PFE — Pfizer Inc. ($28.72, 0.00%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-03 (35 days away)
- Dividend: Yield 5.99% | last ex-div 2026-07-23
- 52W Range: $23.62 — $29.21 (within 2% of the 52-week high) ⚠️
- Unchanged on the day, still pinned near the top of its range. The dullest name on the list keeps winning by not participating.
UPS — United Parcel Service ($93.93, -0.34%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-27 (28 days away) — consensus $1.63 EPS on $22.1B revenue

Growth Stocks
AAPL — Apple Inc. ($329.40, -2.66%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-29 (30 days away)
- 52W Range: $243.42 — $345.34 (within 5% of the 52-week high) ⚠️
- News: The day’s clearest single-stock story. Bank of America’s Wamsi Mohan warned that Meta’s Muse shopping agent could siphon product discovery and transaction activity away from the iPhone ecosystem — while keeping a Buy rating. Separately, investors weighed reports that CEO John Ternus is considering changes to the management structure and product development process. XLK and QQQ were each down only ~0.1%, so this was company-specific, not tape.
AMZN — Amazon.com Inc. ($246.67, +0.21%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-29 (30 days away)
- 52W Range: $196.00 — $287.20
CRCL — Circle ($83.70, -2.45%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-11 (43 days away)
- 52W Range: $49.90 — $159.47
- Fourth straight decline. No fresh catalyst; last week’s CFO transition still sets the tone, and bitcoin’s flat session ($83.6K, +0.08%) offered no offset.
GOOG — Alphabet Inc. ($337.32, -0.54%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-28 (29 days away)
- 52W Range: $236.68 — $404.47
- News: EU regulatory pressure remains the live issue — Google is challenging orders requiring data sharing with AI rivals and a broader opening of Android services, on top of a €403M privacy fine.
HIMS — Hims & Hers Health ($28.70, -0.28%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-09 (41 days away)
- 52W Range: $13.74 — $65.30
INTC — Intel Corporation ($115.93, -0.09%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-22 (23 days away)
- 52W Range: $32.89 — $142.35
- Flat after yesterday’s -5.67% unwind. The crowded-long liquidation appears to have found a level.
META — Meta Platforms ($738.79, +3.24%) ⚠️
- Earnings: 2026-10-28 (29 days away) — consensus $6.74 EPS
- 52W Range: $520.26 — $779.82
- News: Meta launched Muse for Small Business, connecting its agent to Asana, Zoom, Intuit, Box, Canva and Slack — the product layer on top of the enterprise platform announced yesterday, with CJ Desai now leading the new division. The market ignored the platform announcement on Monday and paid up for the product today, recovering most of yesterday’s -4.79%. Note the symmetry: the same Muse agent that lifted Meta is what BofA used to downgrade its view of Apple’s commerce funnel. One analyst note, two stocks, opposite signs.
MSTR — Strategy ($154.67, -1.57%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-29 (30 days away)
- 52W Range: $81.81 — $365.21
NNE — Nano Nuclear Energy ($15.79, -2.29%)
- 52W Range: $14.71 — $60.87
- Third straight decline, no company catalyst. The nuclear complex continues to bleed with the long end.
NVDA — NVIDIA Corporation ($227.21, -0.72%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-17 (49 days away)
- 52W Range: $164.27 — $236.54 (within 4% of the 52-week high) ⚠️
- Gave back a fraction of yesterday’s buyback-driven gain. That it held this well through an AI-sentiment shock is the more interesting data point.
OKLO — Oklo Inc. ($37.11, 0.00%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-10 (42 days away)
- 52W Range: $34.38 — $193.84
RKLB — Rocket Lab USA ($69.70, -3.45%) ⚠️
- Earnings: 2026-11-09 (41 days away)
- 52W Range: $37.57 — $151.00
- News: The watchlist’s worst performer, moving in sympathy with a weak aerospace and defense tape — Boeing -2.57%, with Howmet and General Dynamics also lower — while investors weighed Iridium funding questions. Now below $70 for the first time in weeks, and 54% off its 52-week high.
SMCI — Super Micro Computer ($41.02, -1.82%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-03 (35 days away)
- 52W Range: $19.48 — $58.78
SMR — NuScale Power ($7.76, -1.90%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-05 (37 days away)
- 52W Range: $7.21 — $57.42
- Fifth straight decline, now 7.6% off the 52-week low after last week’s UBS downgrade and the subsequent legal probes.
SOFI — SoFi Technologies ($15.91, -0.13%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-27 (28 days away)
- 52W Range: $14.88 — $32.73
- Stabilized after yesterday’s -3.92% rate-driven selloff, despite yields rising again today.
TEM — Tempus AI ($82.58, -2.94%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-03 (35 days away)
- 52W Range: $40.77 — $104.32
- News: Down despite FDA 510(k) clearance for Tempus ECG-MR, announced Monday — an AI tool that flags undiagnosed moderate-to-severe mitral regurgitation from a standard 12-lead ECG, and the company’s fourth cleared ECG product. Recent insider sale filings and a weak session for high-multiple growth outweighed it. A clean example of good news failing to clear a high discount rate.
TSM — Taiwan Semiconductor ($456.94, +0.90%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-15 (16 days away)
- 52W Range: $266.82 — $479.00 (within 5% of the 52-week high) ⚠️
- One of only four watchlist names green today, and the only one making a serious run at its high during an AI confidence wobble.
UNH — UnitedHealth Group ($374.94, -0.76%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-13 (14 days away) ⚠️ — consensus $4.15 EPS on $111.5B revenue
- 52W Range: $255.97 — $461.62

Tech bull Dan Ives flags ‘shocker risk’ in Anthropic’s IPO leak — Dan Ives, Yorkville Ives on Yahoo Finance (Sept 29)
Ives called the existential-risk disclosures “a shocker risk relative to what I believe,” while treating them as somewhat alarmist and staying firmly bullish on the sector. His framing of the losses and commitments: “Anthropic is the heart and lungs of the AI revolution — and that goes for OpenAI as well,” with the spending representing the cost of “building out a new economy over the next 10 years.” Elsewhere he likened the buildout to “building out the Vegas Strip in 1955.”
Worth noting what that argument concedes. A Vegas Strip analogy is a land-grab thesis, not a cash-flow thesis — it defends $518 billion of commitments on the grounds that the position is worth more than the price, which is exactly the claim the tape is now testing.
Market Outlook
The indices did almost nothing — S&P 500 -0.17%, NASDAQ -0.09% — while consumer confidence printed 81.9, a 12-year low and a 7.3-point miss against consensus, job openings came in at 7.097 million, and the 30-year yield still climbed to 5.59%, its highest since 2002. That combination is the day’s signal: the long end rose through weak demand data and a near-4% decline in crude, which points at term premium and supply rather than at growth or energy inflation. Beneath the flat surface the rotation was sharp and specific — Meta +3.24% and Apple -2.66% on opposite sides of the same analyst note about Meta’s Muse agent, Rocket Lab -3.45% with a soft aerospace tape, and Tempus -2.94% despite a fresh FDA clearance, the familiar pattern of long-duration equity failing to get paid for good news. The AI narrative absorbed two real shocks — Anthropic’s leaked prospectus showing a $41.97 billion loss against $4.59 billion of revenue, and OpenAI shelving GPT-6.1 Astra on safety grounds — yet NVIDIA fell only 0.72% and TSMC rose 0.90%, suggesting the hardware complex is still trading on order books rather than on sentiment. With Core PCE tomorrow and September payrolls Friday against a 90K consensus, the question that warrants the most attention is whether a genuinely weakening consumer can pull the long end down — because today it conspicuously failed to.
