Breaking News & Macro Events

Brent oil jumps more than 4% as U.S. reportedly sends third aircraft carrier to Middle East — CNBC

Crude was the day’s real story. Brent settled at $102.31, up 4.4%, while WTI rose 2.7% to $92.87, on a report that the U.S. is deploying a third carrier strike group to the Middle East by late November. The move compounds existing supply stress: Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries have pushed Moscow to ban diesel exports, Iranian and Houthi attacks have hit Middle East refining capacity, and tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen to its lowest level since May. This is a genuine supply-and-geopolitics repricing, not a positioning quirk.

ISM Manufacturing PMI holds at 54.5 for September

The September ISM Manufacturing report came in at 54.5%, down a tenth from August’s 54.6% — a ninth consecutive month of expansion. Steady-as-she-goes manufacturing gives the Fed little reason to soften its stance.

Brent’s front-month contract rolled from November to December at month-end. The figure above compares the December contract against its own prior close; a naive front-month comparison would misstate the move in both directions.

Tom Lee says “buckle up” for a strong Q4 — Tom Lee, Fundstrat via Benzinga (2026-10-01)

Lee’s argument is pattern-based: since 1935, every instance where the S&P 500 posted a Q2 gain of roughly 14%+ followed by a positive Q3 has produced a positive Q4 — six occurrences, six hits. 2026 fits, with Q2 up 14.87% and Q3 up 2.03%. His summary was characteristically compact: “Buckle up. 4Q looking good.” He offered no specific index target.

Market Outlook

The indices finished effectively unchanged, but that calm masks a meaningful repricing underneath: crude jumped 2.8–4.4% on a reported third U.S. carrier deployment to the Middle East, layered atop Russian refinery outages and the thinnest Strait of Hormuz traffic since May. An energy shock arriving while the 10-year sits at 5.24% and the Fed has been tightening — funds rate up to 3.75% in September — is an uncomfortable combination, since it pressures headline inflation precisely when the market wants evidence the hiking cycle is ending. Equity leadership reflected that unease: defensives and AI infrastructure held up while richly valued growth names like Tempus AI (-6.6%) absorbed the damage, and ISM manufacturing at 54.5 gives the Fed no reason to blink. Tomorrow’s September payrolls report at 8:30am ET is the week’s hinge — consensus looks for roughly 84–90K with unemployment steady at 4.1%, and a hot print would collide awkwardly with oil’s move. Energy’s path from here warrants closer attention than the flat index closes would suggest.
