Labor market faltered in September as jobs increased by just 29,000 — CNBC

Nonfarm payrolls rose a seasonally adjusted 29,000 in September against a Dow Jones consensus of 84,000, and the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2% from an expected 4.1% — though the BLS attributed the rise largely to an influx of new entrants into the labor force. Wage growth slipped to its lowest annual rate since May 2021.

The internals were narrow. Health care added 17,000 jobs, construction 11,000 and manufacturing 9,000, while government shed 17,000, temporary help services lost 11,000 and information services dropped 10,000 amid ongoing concern about AI’s effect on white-collar hiring. Financial activities fell 7,000.

The weakness sits oddly against the rest of the macro picture: the Commerce Department this week revised Q1 and Q2 GDP growth up to 2.5% and 2.2%, and the Atlanta Fed is tracking Q3 at 3.7%. “For the Fed, this number should be the nail in the coffin for an October hike,” wrote Thomas Simons, chief U.S. economist at Jefferies, who noted that August’s strong print “was nothing more than a rebound from very weak hiring in June and July.”

Traders now see little chance of a Fed rate hike in October — CNBC

Market-implied odds of a quarter-point hike at the October 27–28 FOMC meeting collapsed to 17% on CME’s FedWatch tool, down from roughly 36% a week ago. On Kalshi the move was starker: 18%, against nearly 70% a week earlier. Odds that the Fed simply holds jumped to 82.8%.

The repricing began midweek, when core PCE — the Fed’s preferred gauge — came in at 3.0% for August versus a 3.3% consensus. The jobs report finished the job. “This report strengthens the case for the Federal Reserve to remain patient,” said Vanguard senior economist Adam Schickling. “The labor market has not deteriorated sharply, but there is also little evidence that it has meaningfully strengthened.”

December is a different story. FedWatch still prices above 75% odds of a hike at the final meeting of the year, and Kalshi 65%. Navy Federal chief economist Heather Long called the labor market “stable” and said she does not expect the Fed to be dissuaded from moving in December, adding that wage growth at a five-year low “is being wiped out entirely by inflation.”

Europe’s leaders rush to release diesel from stockpiles — MarketWatch

European governments are moving to release diesel from strategic stockpiles as a fuel-price shock works its way through the economy ahead of the U.S. midterms. WTI fell a second straight session to $91.49, down 1.5%, though Brent diverged and closed slightly higher at $102.84.

Market Outlook

Equities took a weak labor print as good news, with the NASDAQ leading a broad advance of 1.19% and the VIX sliding 6.6% to 15.31 as October hike odds fell from roughly 36% to 17% in a week. The more revealing move was in the bond market: the 10-year initially slumped on the 29,000 payroll miss but closed four basis points higher at 5.28%, within a whisker of its 52-week high — a signal that with headline CPI tracking near 3.7% and crude above $90, the long end is more worried about inflation than about growth. That divergence is the thing to watch, because the equity rally is leaning on a Fed pause that the December curve still prices at better than 75% odds of a hike. Beneath the index level, dispersion remains extreme: NVDA, TSM and AAPL are all within roughly 2% of 52-week highs while the small-cap nuclear complex, SOFI and now Nike sit at or near 52-week lows — Nike’s close of $33.87 is its weakest in at least a decade. Wednesday’s September CPI is the next real test, and a headline print that confirms the 3.7% consensus would put meaningful pressure on the pause narrative that carried stocks today.
