| S&P 500 | 7,773.95 | +51.23 | +0.66% |
| NASDAQ | 27,477.31 | +286.45 | +1.05% |

A quiet, upward-drifting Monday with a wide spread between the NASDAQ (+1.05%) and the Dow (+0.18%). Volatility stayed subdued — the VIX held near 15.5 even as it ticked higher, which is the market’s way of saying the gains were real but nobody is paying up for protection.
Breaking News & Macro Events
Intel Slides as TSMC Explores Terafab Tie-Up — Investing.com
The story that set up this morning’s gap played out through the close, and it was the cleanest trade on the board. TSMC is reportedly exploring a partnership on Elon Musk’s Terafab project in Texas — the venture where Intel had been the sole named manufacturing partner since April. The proposed structure would hand TSMC ownership and operation of the facility, with Terafab as anchor customer. Musk characterized the talks as early: “Just discussions, but something may come of it.”
The same report carried a second blow: Susquehanna estimates Intel continued losing CPU share in Q3, with laptop share down 3.9% q/q to 68.1% against AMD’s 3.1% gain, and desktop share falling to roughly 76% — the lowest in the firm’s study since Q2 2023.
The market priced it as a direct transfer. INTC closed −2.63% (recovering meaningfully from −4.26% in pre-market) while TSM gained +2.75%. Worth noting what did not happen: the broader semiconductor complex barely moved, with the PHLX Semiconductor Index up just +0.27% and AMD down 0.34% despite being the named beneficiary of the share-shift data. This was repriced as a company-specific foundry story, not a sector call.
ISM Services Slips Below Expectations
The September ISM Services PMI, released this morning, came in at 54.9 against a consensus near 55.0 — a marginal miss that kept the index comfortably in expansion territory. It was not enough to move the rate narrative on its own, and markets largely looked through it.

- Earnings: 2026-11-03 (29 days away)
- 52W Range: $40.77 — $104.32
- The day’s biggest mover by a wide margin — and we could not identify a same-day catalyst. No company press release was issued today. The two most recent items are the extended Recursion data license (announced September 20, replacing up to $84M in discretionary fees with $42M committed over three years) and FDA clearance for its ECG-MR cardiac AI product (September 28). Both predate the move. Treat this one as unexplained rather than reaching for a narrative.
TSM — Taiwan Semiconductor ($485.80, +2.75%)

- 52W Range: $266.82 — $487.46 (within 5% of 52W high) ⚠️

- Earnings: 2026-10-13 (8 days away) ⚠️
- 52W Range: $255.97 — $461.62
- First watchlist name to report. Up 48% from its 52-week low but still 18% below the high.
A note on the crypto-linked names
CRCL (+2.52%) and MSTR (+2.76%) both closed solidly higher while Bitcoin fell 0.77% to roughly $85,811 and Ethereum slipped 0.46%. This same divergence appeared in pre-market and persisted all session, so it is not a thin-tape artifact. The obvious explanation — a crypto bid — does not hold. We don’t have a verified cause, and we’d rather flag it as unexplained than invent one.
Commodities & FX
| Asset | Price | Change | % Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | $4,167.50 | +$5.20 | +0.12% |
| WTI Oil | $89.19 | −$1.92 | −2.11% |
| Brent Oil | $100.20 | −$2.05 | −2.00% |
| EUR/USD | 1.1223 | −0.0027 | −0.24% |
| USD/JPY | 157.97 | +0.04 | +0.03% |
| 10Y Yield | 5.31% | +0.03 | +3 bp |
| US Dollar (DXY) | 102.15 | +0.22 | +0.22% |
Crude extended its slide for a third straight session, with WTI down a further 2.11% to $89.19 — a meaningful move that drew little attention on an equity-focused day. Gold was effectively flat. The dollar firmed modestly as the euro weakened.
Market Outlook
Equities ground higher on a thin news day, with the NASDAQ’s +1.05% lapping the Dow’s +0.18% on the back of large-cap tech and a single clean semiconductor rotation — TSMC’s reported move on Intel’s Terafab role sent TSM +2.75% and INTC −2.63% without disturbing the broader chip complex, which closed up just 0.27%. That narrowness is the day’s real signal: this was idiosyncratic repositioning rather than a broad risk-on impulse, and a VIX still pinned near 15.5 suggests the market sees nothing on the near horizon worth hedging. Beneath the index-level calm, though, the dispersion is widening — Tempus AI ran +9% with no identifiable catalyst, the crypto-linked names rallied against a falling Bitcoin, and the small-modular-nuclear complex (OKLO, SMR, NNE) continues to grind near 52-week lows, all of which warrants attention from anyone assuming the tape is as quiet as the headline numbers imply. With September CPI pushed out to October 14 and the FOMC still 22 days away, this week offers little macro to trade. Watch Wednesday’s FOMC minutes for any shift in the committee’s tone, and then UnitedHealth on October 13 and TSMC on October 15 — the first watchlist earnings of the season, and the point at which this market stops drifting on narrative and starts repricing on numbers.
