Overnight Developments

Intel Slides as TSMC Explores Terafab Tie-Up — Investing.com

Published this morning at 6:40am ET. TSMC is reportedly exploring a partnership with Elon Musk’s Terafab venture, the Texas semiconductor project where Intel had been the sole named manufacturing partner since April 2026. The proposed structure would have TSMC own and operate the facility with Terafab as anchor customer. Musk confirmed talks are ongoing but early — “Just discussions, but something may come of it.”

The same report carries a second negative: Susquehanna estimates Intel kept losing CPU share in Q3, with laptop model share down 3.9% q/q to 68.1% while AMD gained 3.1% to 29.3%. Desktop share fell to roughly 76%, the lowest in the firm’s study since Q2 2023.

This lands on a stock that has been extraordinarily volatile — INTC ran from $97 on Sep 14 to $127 on Sep 24, then chopped back to $119. Affected sectors: Semiconductors, Foundry.

Nikkei Tags 70,000 for the First Time Since July

Japan closed +2.40% at 69,946.86, up 1,637 points, after briefly reclaiming the 70,000 handle for the first time in about three months. The driver is a catch-up to Friday’s softer-than-expected US employment data, which pushed investors to scale back bets on another Fed hike at the October meeting, plus a rotation back into AI names — SoftBank +~4%, Tokyo Electron +5.6%, Advantest +4.8%.

Worth keeping in proportion: this is Asia repricing Friday’s US data, not a fresh overnight catalyst for US markets. Affected sectors: Semiconductors, AI.

Backdrop: European Sovereign Stress (dated Oct 1–2, not overnight)

French 10-year OAT yields briefly topped 5% last week, the highest since July 2002, with the spread over Bunds widening to roughly 131–154bp — a post-euro-crisis high, widest since 2011–2012. This is Friday’s story rather than an overnight development, but it remains a live risk under European trading and is worth watching for spillover.

Futures & Pre-Market

IndexFuturesChange
S&P 5007,765.50-0.15%
NASDAQ30,991.75-0.23%
DOW51,386.00-0.18%

Futures are effectively flat — none are near the 0.5% threshold. Cash-proxy pre-market agrees: SPY -0.15%, QQQ -0.22%, DIA -0.13%.

Watchlist Movers

  • INTC -4.26% ($119.33 → $114.25) — TSMC/Terafab report plus Susquehanna CPU share losses. A sustained three-hour decline from the 4:00am open, not a single thin print.
  • CRCL +2.82% and MSTR +2.35% — both below the 3% alert threshold. Note the obvious crypto explanation does not hold up: Bitcoin is $86,060, -0.49% on the session and never approached $90,000. Catalyst unclear; treat these as unexplained.
  • TSM +1.04%, NKE +1.33%, NVDA +0.48% — ordinary drift.
  • AMD is -0.60%, so the market is not trading the Susquehanna share-shift as an AMD positive this morning.

International Markets

Asia strong, Europe flat. Nikkei +2.40%, Hang Seng +0.28%. In Europe, FTSE 100 +0.28% and DAX -0.06%.

Shanghai Composite is omitted — mainland China is closed for Golden Week (Oct 1–8). Any quote for it today is a stale Sep 30 print.

What to Watch at Open

Intel is the only watchlist name with a real gap, down over 4% on a credible threat to its Terafab foundry role — watch whether the semiconductor complex treats this as Intel-specific or as a broader foundry repricing, noting AMD is not catching a bid. Otherwise futures are flat and the index-level tone is quiet, so the risk today is idiosyncratic rather than macro.
