| Index | Close | Change | % Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,818.93 | +44.98 | +0.58% |
| NASDAQ | 27,599.79 | +122.48 | +0.45% |
| DOW | 51,521.28 | +253.38 | +0.49% |
| Russell 2000 | 2,830.30 | -16.84 | -0.59% |
| VIX | 15.01 | -0.51 | -3.29% |
The S&P 500 and NASDAQ both closed at fresh record highs, and the VIX slipped back to 15.01 — a level that says the bid is calm rather than frantic. But the breadth underneath was poor. The Russell 2000 fell 0.59% and now sits roughly 8% below its own 52-week high, while the Dow — despite a respectable +0.49% — remains about 5% off its peak. Three of the four indices went up; only the two that mega-cap tech dominates made new highs.
Breaking News & Macro Events
Google Strikes ~$4.3B Nuclear Deal with Constellation, Igniting the Reactor Complex — 24/7 Wall St. / Bloomberg
The day’s cleanest trade. Google signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Constellation Energy to bring roughly 890 megawatts of nuclear capacity online, with a reported value near $4.3 billion, paired with a separate 15-year supply arrangement for another 2.7 gigawatts. Critically, the new capacity comes from efficiency upgrades at six existing reactors in Illinois, New Jersey and Pennsylvania — modernized turbines, steam generators and digital controls — not new construction. Getting more output from units already licensed and running is cheaper and dramatically faster than building, and data centers need the electrons now.
The read-through lifted the entire complex on sentiment alone: OKLO +7.17%, NNE +6.32%, SMR +4.43% on our watchlist, with Constellation itself up double digits and the Global X Uranium ETF up around 5%.
Worth being precise about what this does not change. Google contracted with an operator of existing reactors, not with any small-modular-reactor developer. As 24/7 Wall St. put it, the agreement “leaves their licensing and construction schedules where they were.” OKLO, NuScale and NANO Nuclear are still pre-revenue, still years from delivering power, and still down sharply from their highs — OKLO remains about 80% below its 52-week high of $193.84. This was a repricing of the demand thesis, not of any individual company’s timeline.
US Trade Deficit Widens to $105.6 Billion, Largest Since March 2025 — CNBC / BEA
August’s goods-and-services deficit jumped $12.7 billion to $105.6 billion, well past the $102.0 billion consensus and above July’s revised $92.8 billion. The driver was entirely the import side: imports surged $17.2 billion to an all-time high of $420.8 billion, against exports of $315.2 billion. Industrial supplies rose $9.1 billion on crude oil and nonmonetary gold, and capital goods added $6.2 billion on semiconductors and industrial machinery.
The composition matters more than the headline. Record imports of semiconductors and capital equipment are what an AI-infrastructure build-out looks like in the trade data — this is demand pulling goods in, not weakness. Markets treated it that way and looked through the miss entirely.

Another thin week, and the setup is unchanged from yesterday: September CPI does not land until October 14, which leaves Wednesday’s FOMC minutes as the only release with real power to move the rate debate before the October 27–28 meeting. With the fed funds rate at 3.75% after September’s hike and breakevens pinned at 2.36%, the minutes are the market’s one look at how divided the committee actually was.

- Earnings: 2026-10-28 (22 days away)
- 52W Range: $236.68 — $404.47
- Signed the day’s headline nuclear PPA with Constellation, but the stock barely moved — a 20-year power contract is a cost-line story for Alphabet and a survival story for everyone else in the trade.
HIMS — Hims & Hers Health ($29.47, -0.67%)
- Earnings: 2026-11-09 (34 days away)

- Earnings: 2026-10-22 (16 days away)
- 52W Range: $32.89 — $142.35
- Second straight decline, extending Monday’s -2.63% on the TSMC/Terafab report. No fresh company-specific catalyst surfaced for today’s move — this reads as continued unwinding of a stock that had run extraordinarily hard into the news.

- 52W Range: $164.27 — $243.37 (within 1.7% of 52W high) ⚠️

SOFI — SoFi Technologies ($15.76, -1.01%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-27 (21 days away)
- 52W Range: $14.88 — $32.73
TEM — Tempus AI ($71.98, -13.85%) ⚠️
- Earnings: 2026-11-03 (28 days away)
- 52W Range: $40.77 — $104.32
- The day’s biggest move by a wide margin, and no clean catalyst was identifiable. 24/7 Wall St. documented the slide without naming a trigger — no downgrade, no guidance change, no filing. The backdrop is a sustained distribution pattern: a cluster of insider sales led by CEO Eric Lefkofsky’s affiliated entities through late September, plus ARK Invest trimming its position ahead of a 5.2% drop on October 1. An unexplained 14% single-session decline in a name already under steady insider supply warrants attention.
TSM — Taiwan Semiconductor ($482.30, -0.72%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-15 (9 days away) ⚠️
- 52W Range: $266.82 — $487.47 (within 1.1% of 52W high) ⚠️
- Gave back a fraction of Monday’s +2.75% Terafab pop. Reports in nine days, sitting at the highs — the single most consequential event on the watchlist calendar.
UNH — UnitedHealth Group ($376.32, -0.60%)
- Earnings: 2026-10-13 (7 days away) ⚠️
- 52W Range: $255.97 — $461.62
Commodities & FX
| Asset | Price | Change | % Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | $4,190.60 | +$33.80 | +0.81% |
| WTI Oil | $89.80 | +$0.37 | +0.41% |
| Brent Oil | $100.99 | +$0.67 | +0.67% |
| EUR/USD | 1.1261 | +0.0007 | +0.06% |
| USD/JPY | 157.96 | +0.23 | +0.15% |

| US Dollar (DXY) | 101.85 | -0.32 | -0.31% |
Gold above $4,190 and Brent holding $100 alongside a 10-year at 5.27% is an unusual combination — hard assets and long rates are both signalling inflation persistence even as equity volatility sits at 15. Note the $11.19 Brent–WTI spread, which has been stable in the $9–11 range all week rather than being a contract-roll artifact.
Market Outlook
US equities closed at record highs on the S&P 500 and NASDAQ, but the gains were narrow — the Russell 2000 fell 0.59% and sits 8% below its own peak, meaning a handful of mega-caps carried the tape while the median stock went nowhere. The clearest signal of the day was Google’s ~$4.3 billion, 890-megawatt nuclear agreement with Constellation, which validated the hyperscaler power-demand thesis and lifted every reactor name on the board; the caution is that the deal went to uprating existing plants, so the pre-revenue SMR developers that rallied 4–7% gained sentiment without gaining a single day on their licensing timelines. Meanwhile a record $420.8 billion import month pushed the trade deficit to $105.6 billion — a figure driven by semiconductors and capital goods, which looks more like AI capex pulling goods inward than like underlying weakness. With gold near $4,190, Brent at $100 and the 10-year at 5.27%, the inflation side of the ledger still warrants caution despite a VIX at 15. Wednesday’s FOMC minutes are the only macro event with the power to move the rate debate before the October 27–28 meeting, and TSMC’s October 15 report — nine days out, with the stock 1% from its 52-week high — is the next real test of whether the AI trade can keep validating these multiples.
