Breaking News & Macro Events

Trump strikes deal with Putin to supply Russian diesel to U.S. and global markets — CNBC

Stocks reached their highs of the day after President Trump said Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel, followed by 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons thereafter, with a further 3 million tons contingent on the state of Russia’s refineries. Diesel has been the tightest corner of the energy complex: Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries forced Moscow to ban diesel exports, while Iranian and Houthi attacks have constrained Middle Eastern capacity. The announcement capped crude’s advance into the close and is the single clearest reason the tape finished at session highs.

Hurricane Isaias disrupts U.S. oil production in Gulf of Mexico, threatens refineries — CNBC

Isaias strengthened into a dangerous Category 3 hurricane tracking toward the U.S. Gulf Coast, shutting in offshore production and putting refineries in its path at risk. The storm lands on a fuel market already stretched thin by the wars in Eastern Europe and the Middle East — a genuine two-sided risk against the Russian diesel headline above.

Verizon posts worst day since 2002 as SpaceX U.S. network plans whack cell provider stocks — CNBC

SpaceX’s agreement to buy a nationwide spectrum portfolio sent Verizon down more than 9%, on track for its worst session since July 2002, with AT&T and T-Mobile dragged along. Deutsche Telekom fell 7% in Europe. A satellite operator buying terrestrial spectrum is a structural repricing of carrier competition, not a one-day headline.

Fed officials see another hike coming, but no sign as to when, minutes show — CNBC

Minutes from the September 15–16 meeting, released Wednesday, showed officials expect a further increase without committing to timing. This is a tightening Fed, not an easing one — context that matters for every rate-sensitive line below.

Consumer sentiment slides to second-lowest on record

The University of Michigan’s preliminary October index came in at 46.3, down 3.7% from September and the weakest since May’s all-time low in data going back to November 1952; economists had expected 47. The current-conditions index fell 12.2% to 44.7. One-year inflation expectations rose to 4.7% and the five-year to 3.5%, both the highest since May. Survey director Joanne Hsu noted sentiment “dropped steeply” among lower-income consumers and those with smaller stock portfolios.

Americans’ debt problems are flashing a warning not seen since the Great Recession — CNBC

The Fed’s triennial Survey of Consumer Finances, released Friday, found families “more likely to be behind on their financial obligations than at any point since the 2010 survey.” Wealth disparities narrowed somewhat; the ability to service debt deteriorated significantly.

Trump appoints committee to investigate statements by the Fed’s Lisa Cook — CNBC

A renewed push against a sitting governor after the Supreme Court blocked the first removal attempt. Separately, Treasury Secretary Bessent hired Judy Shelton, whose Fed nomination the Senate previously blocked, as a counselor. Fed-independence risk is a slow burn, but it is building.

Junk bonds are ‘flashing yellow’ — CNBC

High-yield spreads have widened. Worth watching alongside the AI-linked debt being absorbed by credit markets.

  • Earnings: 2026-11-09 (31 days)
  • 52W Range: $13.74 — $65.30
  • News: The watchlist’s biggest mover, and notably not driven by a company announcement. Coverage attributes the move to heavy bullish options positioning, with added interest from reports that Oscar Health’s CEO has been courting Hims for a new drug marketplace. Worth flagging the other side: multiple investor-rights firms have active securities class actions against the company, with a lead-plaintiff deadline in early November. Treat a 10% move on flow rather than fundamentals with appropriate skepticism.

  • 52W Range: $32.89 — $142.35

  • Earnings: 2026-10-27 (18 days)
  • 52W Range: $14.88 — $32.73
  • News: Modest bounce off a weak base.

TEM — Tempus AI ($70.93, +2.38%)

  • Earnings: 2026-11-03 (25 days)
  • 52W Range: $40.77 — $101.56
  • News: Rose after Bank of America raised its price target; the stock caught both the healthcare and the AI bid.

TSM — Taiwan Semiconductor ($453.31, -1.02%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-15 (6 days) ⚠️
  • 52W Range: $266.82 — $487.47
  • News: Fell for a second session despite reporting September revenue of NT$511.86 billion, up 54.6% year over year (down 0.6% from August). Year-to-date revenue is up 41.1%. Blockbuster fundamentals meeting a seller’s tape is the cleanest illustration of this week’s AI de-rating — and the Oct 15 earnings call is now the sector’s swing factor.

UNH — UnitedHealth Group ($379.30, +2.25%)

  • Earnings: 2026-10-13 (4 days) ⚠️
  • 52W Range: $255.97 — $461.62
  • News: Rose on the 2027 Medicare Advantage star ratings release — but read this one carefully. The clear winner was Humana, which surged about 15% after disclosing that 95% of its MA members will be in four-star-or-better plans in 2027, up from just 20% in 2026 and well ahead of J.P. Morgan’s 60–70% expectation. UnitedHealth’s own ratings were reported as roughly flat-to-slightly-lower, alongside Aetna and HCSC. The gain looks like relief that the release contained no negative surprise — Piper Sandler publicly defended the stock on the news — rather than an improvement in UNH’s own scores. Tuesday’s earnings report is the real test.

A note on the nuclear basket: NNE, OKLO and SMR all sit within 5% of 52-week lows on the same day, with OKLO down roughly 82% from its high and SMR down 87%. This is no longer a pullback in a hot theme; it is a completed round trip, and it deserves to be treated as a separate question from the AI-datacenter trade it was once bundled with.

Gold did the day’s real work, adding more than 1.5% to close above $4,200 — corroborated by GLD’s +1.57%. Crude finished close to unchanged after a volatile session: the Trump–Putin diesel announcement capped the advance just as Hurricane Isaias threatened Gulf supply, leaving WTI near $92 and Brent just above $104. The crude ETFs read slightly firmer (USO +0.42%, BNO +0.55%) because of roll effects; the move is best described as flat. Elsewhere on the curve, the 30-year sat at 5.61% and the 2-year at 4.78% — a yield structure that still has the long end at 24-year highs.

Market Outlook

Friday was a relief rally with a specific trigger: software and megacap tech led the tape back from Thursday’s AI-driven slide, and the Trump–Putin diesel deal pushed the indexes to session highs into the close, leaving all three averages positive for the week. What it means is harder than it looks — the bounce came alongside the second-lowest consumer sentiment reading on record, one-year inflation expectations at 4.7%, a Fed whose own minutes point to another hike, long-dated yields at 24-year highs, and a Fed survey showing household debt delinquency at its worst since 2010. That is a market being carried by a handful of large-cap earnings stories while the macro floor quietly softens, and the divergence between TSMC’s 54.6% revenue growth and its falling share price suggests investors have begun paying for AI results rather than AI narratives. The nuclear names on this watchlist sitting at 52-week lows are what the end of that repricing looks like. Next week decides a great deal: September CPI lands Wednesday and PPI Thursday, with UnitedHealth and the big banks opening earnings season on Tuesday — a hot inflation print against this yield backdrop warrants genuine caution.
