Breaking News & Macro Events
Higher rates could be needed to avoid an ‘inflationary mindset’ taking hold, says Fed’s Hammack — CNBC
Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, a voting member of the FOMC, said Monday that tighter policy may be required to bring inflation down. “When feasible, I generally think it’s preferable to make smaller adjustments, and to do so relatively quickly, rather than to wait and risk needing a larger course correction,” she said in prepared remarks to the National Association of Business Economics. The comments follow September meeting minutes in which officials signaled they could vote to raise rates again without indicating timing. With the target range already lifted to 3.75%–4.00% at the September 16 meeting, the market is now pricing a Fed that is tightening rather than easing — an unusual backdrop heading into Wednesday’s CPI print.
Saudi Arabia says drones and missiles still targeting kingdom as Iran-backed Houthis step up attacks — CNBC
Saudi Arabia reported continued drone and missile strikes after more than a dozen people were killed in Houthi attacks on civilian infrastructure, including Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport. Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the US, Canada, France, Germany and Japan have all issued travel warnings, and the Saudi aviation authority extended its suspension of airport operations. Iran’s foreign ministry said it was still reviewing a US response to its proposal for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. This is the proximate driver of today’s move in crude, and the reason energy risk premium is rebuilding. The FAA separately warned US airlines of safety risks over Saudi airspace.
Microsoft to rely more on homegrown AI chips, reducing dependence on Nvidia — CNBC
Microsoft unveiled its third-generation Maia AI accelerator and said it will make Maia its primary architecture for serving AI inference requests, eventually deploying multiple gigawatts of the chips. The next-generation Maia 300 enters production in 2027. This is the most concrete move yet by a hyperscaler to displace Nvidia silicon in its own fleet, and it weighed on the AI hardware complex today — NVDA, TSM and SMCI all finished lower.
Intel, Broadcom CEOs warn capital crunch could become AI’s biggest bottleneck — CNBC
Speaking at the DBS Asia Future Forward Conference in Singapore, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said financing could become a bigger obstacle to AI expansion than shortages of semiconductors, memory or electricity: “[What] I think might be the biggest constraint is capital.” Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan echoed the point, citing the rising cost of capital and questions over whether heavy AI investment will generate sufficient returns. Coming from two suppliers who benefit directly from the buildout, this is a notable shift in tone — and it lands in the same week the Fed is signaling it may tighten further.
NuScale Power sinks 7% as nuclear names give back a month of ground — 24/7 Wall St.
The small-modular-reactor complex sold off hard across the board. All three nuclear names on the watchlist — OKLO, SMR and NNE — closed at fresh 52-week lows, unwinding the rally that followed Google’s reactor deal earlier in October. The sector now sits 76%–88% below its 52-week highs.
Meta debuts Muse Wonder AI model in latest test of users’ willingness to pay — CNBC
Meta launched Muse Wonder, which it calls its most advanced model for powering digital assistants. Access requires a Muse app subscription at $20 or $100 per month. Meta AI chief Alexandr Wang said the model, codenamed “Watermelon,” was built so personal and professional agents don’t stumble on real-world tasks like booking reservations. The release underscores Meta’s push to build AI revenue outside its core advertising business, and META was the watchlist’s best performer today.

Brent above $106 and WTI above $93 reflect a rebuilding geopolitical risk premium rather than a demand surprise. Gold eased despite the geopolitical backdrop, which is consistent with a firmer dollar. Separately, Zelenskyy accused Russia of violating the newly declared energy ceasefire as drone attacks continued, and Trump defended his diesel agreement with Putin against bipartisan criticism.
Market Outlook
Today was a quiet index print hiding a loud rotation: the Dow rose while the Nasdaq fell, as a hawkish Fed voice, a hyperscaler moving away from merchant silicon, and two chip CEOs warning about the cost of capital all landed in the same session. The common thread is financing — Hammack arguing for faster tightening, and Hock Tan naming capital rather than chips or power as the AI buildout’s binding constraint, point at the same pressure, and the speculative long tail felt it first: the small-modular-reactor names all closed at 52-week lows while large-cap quality and the Dow absorbed the day comfortably. Crude’s climb toward $93 on the Saudi airport attacks adds a supply-side complication the Fed cannot offset with policy, and the market’s willingness to pay up for Meta’s new subscription AI model suggests investors are still discriminating between AI stories with revenue attached and those without. Breadth warrants attention here — the bull market just turned four, and leadership is narrowing as the cost of capital rises. Wednesday’s September CPI is the week’s hinge: a hot print against a Fed already signaling it may hike again would reprice the entire curve, with UnitedHealth tomorrow, the big banks midweek and TSMC on Thursday arriving to test whether earnings can carry what multiples no longer can.
