Breaking News & Macro Events
Williams says Fed may not have to hike rates in 2027, at odds with traders — CNBC (Oct 13)
New York Fed President John Williams said the Fed may not need to raise rates in 2027, a view the report frames as more dovish than current trader pricing. It lands one day after Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack argued the opposite case, and two days before the September CPI print.
Higher rates could be needed to avoid ‘inflationary mindset’ taking hold, says Fed’s Hammack — CNBC (Oct 12)
Hammack warned that higher rates could be required to stop an inflationary mindset from setting in. The split between her and Williams inside a single 24-hour window is the clearest signal yet that the committee is not aligned heading into the October 27–28 meeting. September’s minutes had already shown officials expecting another hike without agreeing on timing.
IMF warns bond yields could see a ‘disorderly’ spike as debt, inflation risks worsen — CNBC (Oct 13)
The IMF cautioned that sovereign bond yields could spike disorderly as debt and inflation risks compound. With the 10-year already at 5.22%, this is a warning about the pace of a move rather than its direction.
Oil prices today: Brent, WTI gain on Middle East tensions — CNBC (Oct 8)
Crude has run hard over the past week on disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, with tanker traffic through the strait reported well below pre-conflict levels. WTI settled today at $95.07, up 6.3% from last Tuesday’s $89.44; Brent is at $106.68. Both benchmarks are in backwardation — December WTI trades below November, and January Brent below December — which is the curve shape you get from genuine near-term supply tightness rather than financial positioning. This is the single most important input into tomorrow morning’s inflation print.
The latest inflation data is expected to show price increases are accelerating — CNBC (Oct 13)
A preview of Wednesday’s September CPI report, framed around accelerating prices. Consensus looks for roughly +0.5% month-over-month on the headline and +0.2% on core.

Market Outlook
Headline indices went nowhere today, but the distribution underneath was unusually violent: UnitedHealth gapped up 5% on a beat-and-raise and closed red, and Apple set a new 52-week high intraday before surrendering the entire gain. That pattern — good news bought at the open and sold into the close — is what a market looks like when positioning is full and the next catalyst is a risk rather than an opportunity. The nuclear complex is the clearest casualty of that rotation, with NuScale, Oklo and NANO Nuclear all printing fresh 52-week lows as investors reprice pre-revenue stories against a 5.22% 10-year. Crude is the variable that ties it together: WTI up 6.3% in a week on Hormuz supply disruption feeds directly into an inflation print that consensus already expects to accelerate, while Williams and Hammack publicly disagree about whether more tightening is needed. Wednesday’s September CPI release is the only thing on this week’s calendar that matters, and with the October 27–28 FOMC exactly 14 days out, a hot number would leave the committee very little room to posture.
