Overnight Developments
Micron, SoftBank and ASML slide as Wall Street chip rout spreads — CNBC
A semiconductor sell-off that began on Wall Street Monday widened into Asia and Europe overnight. The trigger: China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) announced progress over the weekend on a new memory-chip architecture that packs more data into less space. CXMT is China’s leading rival to Micron, SK Hynix and Samsung, and while analysts broadly still see it trailing the US and Korean leaders, the news landed on a market already nervous about AI financing and stretched valuations.
Per CNBC, SK Hynix plunged more than 10% and Samsung Electronics shed 7.4% — both to their lowest levels since August. SoftBank Group sank 8.5% and Tokyo Electron dropped 7.2%. In Europe, ASML fell 3.3% in early trade, with STMicroelectronics and Infineon both down about 5%. UBP’s Vey-Sern Ling framed it as positioning rather than fundamentals: “Investors are jittery and looking for excuses to take profit on AI-related stocks that have outperformed this year, especially memory stocks.”
Affected sectors: Semiconductors, AI infrastructure, Technology
UnitedHealth tops estimates and raises full-year outlook — CNBC
UnitedHealth reported Q3 2026 revenue of $112.7 billion, adjusted earnings of $4.69 per share ($4.56 GAAP), and raised its full-year adjusted outlook to at least $20.50 per share. The medical cost ratio came in at 88.4% against roughly 89.9% expected — the number that has punished insurers for two years. CFO Wayne DeVeydt cautioned that medical costs “continue to be elevated versus historical norms” and flagged the No Surprises Act dispute process as adding at least 100 basis points to total medical costs.
Affected sectors: Managed Care, Healthcare
Futures & Pre-Market
| Index | Futures | Change |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,847.50 | -0.13% |
| NASDAQ | 30,717.00 | -0.59% |
| DOW | 52,185.00 | +0.14% |
This is a rotation, not a broad risk-off. The Dow is green, small caps are firm (IWM +0.26%), and the damage is concentrated in one place: the semis. SMH is -1.84% pre-market, and it is doing nearly all the work in that NASDAQ number.
Watchlist Movers
Pre-market volume is thin, so treat these as indicative:
- UNH +2.29% — Q3 beat and raised guidance (above)
- SMCI -2.81% — AI server hardware caught in the chip sell-off
- RKLB -1.96% — no confirmed catalyst
- OKLO -1.83% — no confirmed catalyst; high-beta nuclear name
- INTC -1.22% — semiconductor complex
- NVDA -1.00% — semiconductor complex
- TSM -0.83% — semiconductor complex
For scale on the epicenter: Micron is -3.84% pre-market after falling 3.9% Monday.
International Markets
Asia split sharply along sector lines. The Nikkei fell 1.82% to 67,777 in its first session back after Monday’s Health-Sports Day holiday, dragged down by SoftBank and the chip equipment names. But Hang Seng rose 0.30% and Shanghai gained 0.10% — China’s market took the CXMT news as good news for China. Europe shrugged it off at the index level: FTSE 100 +0.62%, DAX +0.35%, even as their chip constituents fell hard.
What to Watch at Open
Watch whether the chip weakness stays contained to semis or bleeds into the broader AI trade — SMH is down 1.8% while the Dow is up, and that divergence is the whole story this morning. UNH’s beat gives healthcare a bid that may partly offset tech drag on the S&P.
