A split tape. The Dow added more than 500 points and small caps led, while the Nasdaq finished essentially flat — money moved out of AI and semiconductor names and into defensives and beaten-down consumer stocks.

Breaking News & Macro Events

Wholesale prices jumped 6.3% annually in September, biggest gain since 2022 — CNBC

September’s producer price index rose 1.3% for the month and 6.3% year over year, the largest monthly gain since March 2022 and the biggest annual increase since December 2022. The monthly figure was more than double the 0.6% consensus. Energy costs drove the index, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics data showing signs of spillover into other categories — the central worry for a Fed that would prefer to look through a supply shock.

Consumer prices rose 3.7% annually in September as gas prices skyrocket — CNBC

Wednesday’s CPI set up the PPI surprise. Headline CPI rose 0.6% on the month to 3.7% annually, against Dow Jones estimates of 0.6% and 3.6%. Core CPI was tamer at 2.6% annually after a 0.3% monthly rise. Gasoline jumped 9.1% in the month and accounted for roughly half the headline gain; over the past year gas is up 34.2% and fuel oil 74.2%. Pressure was broad-based beyond energy, with shelter up 0.4%, used vehicles up 0.7% and tariff-sensitive apparel up 0.3%.

Economists: Hot PPI shows the Fed’s work is not done — CNBC

Fed officials responded to the energy-led inflation in September by approving their first interest rate hike in more than three years, a quarter point that took the funds rate to a 3.75%–4.00% target range. Thursday’s PPI feeds directly into the Fed’s preferred gauge: Wall Street now estimates core PCE rose 0.32% in September, up from 0.25% in August, which would lift the annual core rate to 3.1% from 3.01%. Fed futures on Thursday priced only a 29% probability of a hike at the October meeting but a 91% probability of at least one hike by December. “On the economic data alone, there is little reason for the Fed to hesitate,” wrote Mizuho’s Alex Pelle.

Why a $2 trillion deficit and 5% Treasury yields are becoming America’s biggest economic challenge — CNBC

Long-term yields above 5% and a roughly $2 trillion federal deficit are pushing mortgage rates toward 7.5%. CNBC traces the rise in the 10-year to the war with Iran, which began February 28 and sent oil and diesel prices sharply higher, leaving bond traders demanding more compensation for the risk of further central bank tightening. Competition for capital is intensifying as companies issue hundreds of billions in new debt to build AI infrastructure, and with the November 3 midterms likely to lock in divided government, meaningful deficit reduction looks years away.

Big pharma stocks close near all-time highs as tech selloff pushes investors toward safer bets — MarketWatch

The clearest expression of Thursday’s rotation. Defensive healthcare caught the bid that AI names lost — visible in this watchlist, where Pfizer touched a fresh 52-week high on a day the chip complex sold off.

  • 52W Range: $266.82 — $487.47 (13.4% below the high)
  • News: TSMC posted a record profit for a sixth straight quarter. Net profit rose 68.7% to NT$763.1 billion, beating the roughly NT$746.3 billion consensus. Revenue was US$46.7 billion, up 16.2% sequentially and above the high end of guidance; gross margin 66.4%, operating margin 58.7% — above the top of its own 58% guidance. EPS was NT$29.43. Q4 guidance of US$52.3–54.3 billion implies a 14% sequential rise and a 58% jump from a year earlier at the midpoint, and full-year 2026 revenue growth was raised to about 44% in USD. Capex for 2026 was reiterated at US$60–64 billion, with 2026–2028 spending set to run significantly above the prior three years. HPC was 68% of revenue; 3nm alone was 33%. Capacity is a “fierce” battleground among Nvidia, Apple and Broadcom. The stock still fell, gapping down to open at $415.17 and trading as low as $407.15 before recovering — a reminder that in this tape even a beat-and-raise in the AI supply chain is being sold.

Full-year adjusted EPS guidance was raised to at least $20.50, up from $19.50–$20.00 in July. The stock has continued to work higher in the two sessions since.

Notable Voices

Cramer: don’t give up on this market — Jim Cramer, CNBC (2026-10-14)

Cramer argued that uncertainty around inflation, interest rates and the war with Iran makes the market’s next move nearly impossible to anticipate, and warned that investors who capitulate risk missing the handful of sessions that produce most annual gains. He flagged Wednesday’s reaction as evidence of how unpredictable the tape has become — Treasury yields initially rose on the hot CPI, then reversed even as oil kept climbing. His framing of the key variable: an end to the war could send oil sharply lower and ease inflation without further Fed action.

Cramer: don’t bail on the semis — Jim Cramer, CNBC (2026-10-13)

With the VanEck Semiconductor ETF down 7.2% over six straight sessions, Cramer argued chip stocks are increasingly trading as a bloc regardless of individual fundamentals, obscuring genuine demand. He pointed to Micron’s 26 long-term take-or-pay agreements covering about 35% of revenue through 2030 as the kind of visibility the selloff is ignoring. He conceded more downside is plausible: “It’s reasonable to expect a sharp pullback after how far these stocks traveled.”

Market Outlook

Thursday delivered a textbook rotation rather than a rally: the Dow rose 1.08% and the Russell 2000 1.38% while the Nasdaq managed just 0.08%, as a September PPI print of 1.3% monthly — more than double consensus — pushed capital out of long-duration AI stories and into pharma, consumer and small-cap names. The deeper signal is that the market no longer treats this inflation impulse as transitory. The Fed has already delivered its first hike in three years, futures price a 91% chance of another by December, and the 10-year holds above 5% against a $2 trillion deficit. The discount rate applied to speculative growth has structurally repriced. That is why TSMC could beat on every line, raise full-year growth to 44% and still close down 1.8%, and why NuScale, Oklo, Nano Nuclear and SoFi all printed fresh 52-week lows intraday before violent reversals — positioning, not fundamentals, is setting prices in the high-beta complex. The intraday recoveries across those names and Rocket Lab’s halving of a 16% loss suggest buyers are engaging at washout levels, but one session of dip-buying does not undo an eight-session, 20% drawdown in a name like Intel. Attention now turns to the October 27–28 FOMC, where only a 29% hike probability is priced, and to September PCE later this month. Meta’s October 21 report is the first real test of whether megacap AI spending still earns the market’s benefit of the doubt.
