Breaking News & Macro Events

Brent oil touches $110 as Iran escalates Hormuz attacks, Ukraine vows to hit Russian refineries — CNBC

At least nine commercial ships have been attacked near the Strait of Hormuz since Sunday as Iran attempts to choke off crude exports through the waterway. U.S. Central Command said Iran sank the container ship GFS Pride on Wednesday; the Singapore-registered vessel’s crew was safely evacuated. Houthi militants in Yemen fired missiles and drones at Saudi Arabia repeatedly this week, and the “energy ceasefire” between Ukraine and Russia has unraveled. Brent hit a session high of $110 — its first time there since May — before closing at $109.86, a gain of 3.7% on CNBC’s reference close.

Wall Street’s fear gauge is ripping. Traders see it going even higher — CNBC

The AI-related selloff pushed the VIX above 22 intraday for the first time in four months, and the options tape suggests traders are positioning for more. One trader bought 9,200 November 20-strike VIX calls for $1.7 million and 12,500 November 23-strike calls for $1.1 million — a wager that the index closes above 23 by the third week of November.

Fed’s Warsh withholds rate signal, praises recent global tightening — CNBC

Speaking at an IMF event in Bangkok, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh declined to say whether the central bank will hike again this month. “I don’t prejudge meetings. I don’t believe in saying now what I might do at the meetings that we have in the balance of this year,” he said, restating his opposition to forward guidance. He characterized the global policy shift as “a synchronous tightening in monetary policy in most places around the world,” which means “there’s no free riders.” On AI, he was optimistic that economies using it well will grow more productive — while warning the road there will be “very bumpy.”

Wholesale prices jumped 6.3% annually in September, biggest gain since 2022 — CNBC (Oct 15)

September PPI rose 1.3% on the month and 6.3% year over year — the largest monthly gain since March 2022 and the largest annual gain since December 2022. Energy costs drove the index, with signs of spillover into other categories, and the print followed a CPI release earlier in the week that also came in hotter than expected on an annual basis.

U.S. budget deficit swells to almost $2 trillion for fiscal 2026, up 12% in a single year — CNBC

The fiscal 2026 deficit approached $2 trillion, a 12% increase year over year, against a backdrop of 10-year Treasury yields holding near 5%.

  • The day’s standout dislocation: MSTR fell 9.56% while bitcoin fell just 0.70% (to ~$81,565). That is roughly 14x the move in the underlying asset — a compression of the leverage premium, not a crypto selloff.

Notable Voices

Major earnings reports are due next week, but strong results may not be enough to quell market fears — Bob Lang, Explosive Options, via CNBC (2026-10-16)

Lang argues the market’s internals are the problem, not its earnings. “These conditions right now, where we have sort of a, some stocks are winning and some stocks are losing — it’s not a real healthy condition for the market,” he said. He sees a 5% pullback as possible by year-end and frames the longer risk as arithmetic: “We’re not going to have these strong growth rates in revenue and earnings for stocks for forever… eventually things [are] going to slow down a little bit.” His warning on rates is blunt — “if the cost of money continues to be expensive, just continue to rise, then eventually it’s going to be a backlash for the rest of the economy.”

Paul Tudor Jones, per the same report, said this week that 2027 could be a genuinely challenging year for equities, citing new equity supply from major tech IPOs and a ballooning federal deficit.

Per Bank of America, stripping out energy and technology, S&P 500 earnings growth is expected to have slowed to 7% in Q3 from 12% in Q2 — a reminder that the headline blended growth rate of 29% rests on a narrow base.

Market Outlook

Friday was a selloff with three separate engines running at once: an AI/semiconductor derating that sent the VanEck Semiconductor ETF down for a ninth consecutive session — a streak without precedent since 2006 — a geopolitical oil shock out of the Strait of Hormuz, and a rates backdrop in which 6.3% wholesale inflation has futures markets pricing the possibility of two more hikes by December. The internals deserve more attention than the index levels: a 1.09% decline in the S&P 500 masked 8-10% drawdowns across speculative AI, nuclear and crypto-adjacent names, while staples and energy closed green and small caps slipped into correction territory earlier this week. The MSTR dislocation — down 9.6% against a 0.7% move in bitcoin — is the cleanest evidence that what is being repriced is leverage and duration, not the underlying assets, and that pattern warrants attention well beyond a single ticker. Higher oil feeding into an already-hot PPI is the uncomfortable combination here, because it narrows the Fed’s room to treat energy-driven inflation as transitory. With Meta reporting Wednesday and the FOMC convening October 27-28, the next ten days will test whether strong corporate fundamentals can still outvote the cost of money.
