Stocks rose for a second day as SpaceX’s quarter pulled money back into the AI trade. Per CNBC’s live market blog, Nvidia was the Nasdaq’s biggest contributor, SpaceX itself was second after a 10% jump, and semis broadly gained about 2%. Netflix was the laggard, down more than 5% after cutting its full-year revenue and ad guidance. The VIX closed below 17 for the first time since last week’s selloff.

Breaking News & Macro Events

Meta posts Q3 revenue beat and strong guidance — CNBC

After the close, Meta reported third-quarter revenue of $64.60 billion versus $63.37 billion expected (LSEG) and EPS of $3.83, which CNBC says was not immediately comparable to the $5.75 consensus. Fourth-quarter revenue guidance is $73 billion to $76 billion, and full-year capex was narrowed to $135 billion to $145 billion from $130 billion to $145 billion, against a $138 billion Street estimate. Daily active people of 3.64 billion trailed estimates, and Reality Labs logged another large loss.

The non-financial items may matter more for the stock. Meta will create a non-voting Class C share class, distributed as a dividend in January 2027 and functioning as a two-for-one split. Headcount fell 12% quarter-on-quarter to 66,000. And the company disclosed that Zuckerberg is evaluating moving his primary residence out of California over Proposition 40, the proposed state wealth tax. Shares were trading roughly 3% to 5% higher in the first hour of after-hours trading per our quote feed, with the conference call still in progress.

SpaceX stock jumps 10% after earnings beat and Musk hints at Tesla tie-up — CNBC

SpaceX closed up 10% after reporting $14.6 billion in Q3 revenue, up 161%, against a $12.72 billion LSEG consensus, with its “Super Intelligence” AI unit growing ninefold. Musk said both SpaceX and Tesla boards have formed special committees to discuss a merger. Rocket Lab and other space names rallied in sympathy, and Cresset’s Joe Zidle told CNBC the result “suggests there is still a longer runway” for the AI trade.

Tesla then beat after the close on revenue and EPS even as automotive revenue fell 3% to $20.56 billion. The catch is in the cash flow: net income fell 29% to $787 million, capex more than doubled to $3.73 billion, and free cash flow dropped 62% to $1.53 billion. Musk called a merger “a good idea” but noted it needs a 50% vote of all Tesla shares, “quite a high hurdle.”

Meta ordered to pay $25 billion penalty in New Mexico Cambridge Analytica case — CNBC

A New Mexico judge set the penalty at $25 billion, reduced from a $219.5 billion jury-implied award, after the state won a September verdict over data-privacy misstatements. Interest accrues at 15% a year until paid. Meta’s chief legal officer said the company is “confident” it will “prevail on appeal.” For scale, $25 billion is roughly 40% of the quarter’s revenue reported hours later; the market treated it as an appeal story, since the stock finished the regular session up 0.47%.

Housing is flashing warning signs just as the Fed weighs more interest rate hikes — CNBC

Pending home sales fell 7.3% in September to an all-time low in a series going back to 2001, housing starts dropped 5.2% against a 0.4% expected decline, and single-family permits hit their lowest since 2023. The 30-year mortgage rate is 7.43%. The piece frames the Fed’s dilemma plainly: housing is in a slump while producer goods prices rose at the fastest pace since 2009, so the central bank is expected to keep hiking into weakness. Mortgage rates dipped this week for the first time in two months, but demand still fell.

Oil prices mixed as traders assess Middle East developments — CNBC

December WTI settled at $97.15, down 67 cents, and Brent at $108.82, up 3 cents, after an overnight spike faded. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said naval mines stopped three tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and set two ablaze, and Yemen’s Houthis claimed strikes on Saudi Aramco facilities at Yanbu and Shaybah. Goldman estimates the global average crude freight rate is above $20 a barrel versus $3 a year ago, with Hormuz war-risk premiums accounting for about $7 of the increase. Southwest Airlines cut its 2026 profit forecast on fuel after the close.

BlackRock’s Rick Rieder sees ‘historic’ opportunity in high-quality bonds — CNBC

BlackRock’s fixed-income CIO says investors can now build a portfolio yielding more than 7% with under three years of duration and an A- average rating, something he says only happens during a crisis, and this is not one. He favors investment-grade hyperscaler bonds, which Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Oracle have issued to the tune of $228.4 billion year to date, and is more cautious on data-center credit that is not hyperscaler-backed. He also warned rates could still move higher.

Abroad, UK inflation jumped to 3.5% in September, and markets now price a 98% chance of a Bank of England hike next month.

Notable Voices

Cramer says the recent AI sell-off echoes the lesson of the 1987 crash — Jim Cramer, CNBC (2026-10-19)

On the 39th anniversary of Black Monday, Cramer argued last week’s data-center rout looked like 1987. “Rampant, automatic selling destroyed stocks, even as the underlying companies were quite strong,” he said. He suspects a hedge-fund liquidation intensified Friday’s drop and says the job now is to separate stocks falling because the business is weakening from stocks falling because of forced sellers.

Jim Cramer: Don’t chase the AI rebound yet — Jim Cramer, CNBC (2026-10-19)

Despite being a long-term believer, Cramer laid out four conditions before getting aggressive again. “I just don’t think it’s safe to be aggressively bullish on the group until the charts improve, the hyperscalers report, the election’s in the rearview mirror, and Anthropic manages to come public.” He flagged double-top patterns in the semiconductor and memory ETFs and wants the Nasdaq back above its 50-day average. Two of his four boxes, SpaceX and Meta reporting, were checked this week.

Market Outlook

The AI trade got the earnings evidence it needed this week: SpaceX’s 161% growth lifted the Nasdaq 1.05% and dragged the VIX under 17, and Meta followed after the close with a revenue beat, a $73–76 billion Q4 guide, and capex narrowed rather than raised. That combination, demand confirmed and spending contained, is the opposite of what sank the group last week, and Supermicro’s $4 billion guidance beat says the same thing one layer down the supply chain. The macro backdrop has not improved, though: the 10-year sits at 5.15%, pending home sales are at a record low, and the Fed meets in six days with hikes, not cuts, on the table and no fresh CPI or payrolls to argue otherwise. Oil near $97 with mines in the Strait of Hormuz is the swing factor for both inflation and transports, as Southwest’s fuel-driven guidance cut showed tonight. Watch Meta’s open tomorrow as the first read on whether a contained-capex beat is rewarded, then the FOMC decision Wednesday and Alphabet, Amazon, Intel and Strategy reporting next week.
