The AI trade reversed hard. Per CNBC’s live market blog, the Nasdaq had its worst session since June and the S&P 500 its worst since July, while the Dow finished flat and the Russell 2000 edged up. Meta fell about 7% despite its beat, AMD lost more than 8%, Micron 6% and Nvidia 4%, and CoreWeave dropped 10%. The power and nuclear names tied to data-center buildout were hit hardest: GE Vernova and Bloom Energy each fell more than 11%, Vistra more than 10%, with Oklo and NuScale down 4% and 3%. Treasurys caught the safe-haven bid, with the 10-year yield dropping more than 17 basis points to its lowest in almost a month.
Breaking News & Macro Events
Meta stock sinks nearly 7% as AI spend pushes free cash flow negative — CNBC
The market read past the revenue beat to the cash flow line: free cash flow was negative $2.12 billion for the quarter, and Meta raised the floor of its full-year capex range to $135 billion to $145 billion from $130 billion. Spreads on Meta’s five-year credit default swaps hit all-time highs on Thursday. The new non-voting Class C shares, which the filing says exist to “provide Meta the ability to finance its growth,” read to the market as a future equity raise rather than a split. Shares traded as low as $639.69, down 8.3%, before closing at $648.85, and CNBC’s Investing Club argued not to fold on the stock after the sell-off.
Chip stocks fall as supply warning deepens AI selloff — 24/7 Wall St.
The second blow came from the equipment layer. Lam Research fell 9% after record quarterly revenue of $8.22 billion was overshadowed by December-quarter guidance capped at $8.6 billion by supply-chain constraints, which CEO Tim Archer said could limit chip output through 2027 even as he called the tightness “nothing like” COVID-era shortages. The SOXX semiconductor ETF fell about 6%, with Marvell and AMD down 8% and Intel 7% in morning trading. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, speaking from GTC Berlin, told CNBC that neocloud demand is “off the charts” but capital is scarce: “The demand of the capital is much greater than the availability of the capital. That’s going to get solved.” Wells Fargo’s desk said that comment was “spooking markets and reigniting the concerns around the capital markets on the credit side.” Huang separately said he sees no sign of a 2029 memory glut, the fear that has driven the past week’s selloff in Micron, SK Hynix and Samsung.
AI debt and French bonds face a stress test — CNBC
The credit tape is where the AI worry is now being priced. Per CNBC’s FactSet analysis, CoreWeave’s five-year CDS spread reached 1,065.84 basis points on Oct. 21, Oracle’s rose to 308 bp from 141 at the start of the year, and SoftBank’s sat near a four-year high of 432 bp. France’s five-year CDS at 89.8 bp now costs more than Italy’s, with the 10-year OAT above 5%, its highest since 2002, after a weekend of mass protests. Blackstone’s Jon Gray told CNBC that CoreWeave can “find a way through” its financing pressure because the pricing of compute is up 50% and its data centers are leased below market, but the stock still fell 3.55% and is down 14% on the week. Against that backdrop, OpenAI is nearing a round of up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation led by UAE investors and Coatue, positioned as a bridge to a likely 2027 IPO.
Brent crude tops $113, highest since May, after Trump hints at action on Iran — CNBC
Brent settled up 4% at $113.17, its highest close since May 4, and WTI up 2.4% at $99.47, after The New York Times reported the U.S. and Israel have drawn up plans for a “short but intensive” strike campaign on Iran after the Nov. 3 midterms. Trump said the U.S. is not negotiating, and that “something one way or the other” will “happen fairly soon.” The State Department ordered non-emergency staff out of Saudi Arabia after a Houthi attack on Dammam’s airport killed two people, and Reuters reported Saudi Aramco told headquarters staff to work remotely. The fuel bill is already in the airline numbers: American Airlines now expects to lose $1 to $1.60 a share in 2026, the fourth major carrier to cut its outlook this month, with its Q3 fuel cost up 67.5% to $4.64 billion.
Jobless claims near the lowest since the 1960s as low-fire trend continues — CNBC
Initial claims fell to 194,000 for the week ended Oct. 17, below the 200,000 consensus and just above July’s 189,000, the lowest since 1969. The four-week average is 197,750. The contrast with hiring is stark: payrolls rose only 29,000 in September and have averaged 69,000 a month this year, and unemployment is 4.2%. Firms are not firing, but they are not hiring either, which gives the Fed no labor-market reason to pause next week.

Oil settles are from CNBC and compare December to December. Gold is the December contract’s last daily bar. Bitcoin fell about 3.3% to roughly $81,200. Gold’s 2.7% drop alongside a 19 bp Treasury rally is a liquidation pattern, not a safe-haven one: the money went to bonds and the dollar barely moved.
Notable Voices
Bill Ackman says 2027 will be an amazing year for stocks as wars, inflation ease — Bill Ackman, CNBC (2026-10-22)
The Pershing Square CEO told Squawk on the Street that the Iran and Russia-Ukraine wars, plus elevated inflation and rates, are holding back an otherwise “booming market environment.” Once the war overhang lifts, he said, “energy prices could come way down.” “We’re going to have an amazing 2027,” he added. He is unfazed by Meta’s drop, saying “you cannot look at the day one trading” of an earnings reaction, and called Netflix at 18 times earnings “a high growth utility.” CNBC notes WTI is up 72% and Brent 83% in 2026, and that gasoline accounted for over half of the last CPI increase.
Fundstrat’s Tom Lee: We’re near the end stages of the AI selloff — Tom Lee, CNBC Closing Bell (2026-10-22)
Lee’s call, per the clip’s title, is that the AI unwind is closer to its end than its beginning. CNBC’s video page carries no further summary of his reasoning, so the headline is all we can attribute.
Market Outlook
The “contained capex” story lasted one session: Meta’s negative free cash flow and a higher capex floor sent its CDS to record wides, Lam Research told the Street that equipment supply caps chip output into 2027, and Jensen Huang said out loud that the neoclouds cannot find the capital they need. Together that moved the AI debate from demand, which nobody disputes, to financing, which the credit market is now pricing at 1,066 basis points for CoreWeave and above Italy for France. The Nasdaq’s worst day since June and a 14% VIX jump say the regrossing Cramer wanted to see has not started, and the rotation into Apple, Pfizer, Costco and the Dow shows where the money is hiding. The macro backdrop gave the Fed nothing to ease with, jobless claims at 194,000 and Brent at $113 on renewed Iran strike planning, but the 19 basis point rally in the 10-year says the bond market now fears a growth scare more than another hike. Watch tomorrow’s flash PMIs for the first October read on activity, then UPS and SoFi on Monday, the FOMC decision Wednesday, and Alphabet, Amazon, Intel and Strategy reporting into Thursday’s GDP and PCE prints.
