The selling changed address. Per CNBC’s live market blog, Thursday’s tech rout rotated into the defensives on Friday: consumer staples, utilities and health care all fell, the Dow lost 1.23% while the Nasdaq slipped only 0.21%, and chip names such as Micron and AMD actually rose nearly 3% and almost 2%. American Express fell more than 3% after announcing a 5% workforce cut, and Caterpillar and Goldman Sachs added to the Dow’s drag. For the week the S&P 500 lost 0.5%, the Nasdaq 0.7%, and the Dow gained 0.4%. Jed Ellerbroek of Argent Capital put it this way: “For the last two weeks, investors have been sprinting from tech stocks and data center beneficiary stocks to safe stuff, and eventually, you run out of people willing to do that sprint, and that’s what today looks like and feels like.”
Breaking News & Macro Events
Brent crude oil tops $116, a six-month high, as tensions swell in the Middle East — CNBC
Brent settled up 3.1% at $116.72, its highest close since April 29, and WTI up 3.8% at $103.27, as investors increasingly price in renewed U.S. strikes on Iran after the Nov. 3 midterms. Brent is up 6.2% on the week, its third straight weekly gain. Iran’s army chief said the military is prepared for “asymmetric warfare,” Houthi drone strikes on the Shaybah oil field and Dammam’s airport killed four people this week, the State Department has ordered non-essential staff out of Saudi Arabia, and Reuters reported Saudi Aramco told Dhahran headquarters staff to work remotely. Crude above $100 is also the one thing the bond market agreed on today (see below).
10-year Treasury yield drops back to 5% this week as investors seek cover from AI worries — CNBC
The 10-year yield rose 5 basis points to 4.999% on Friday after breaking below 5% on Thursday for the first time in a month; the 2-year rose 5 bp to 4.686% and the 30-year 4 bp to 5.312%. The AI credit stress has not eased: CoreWeave’s 9.75% 2031 bond now yields 15.637% and its five-year CDS spread sits at 1,129 bp, a level generally considered distressed, and Morgan Stanley cut its CoreWeave target to $70 from $99 on Friday while saying a hyperscaler-backed financing is “the most reasonable path forward.” Fwdbonds’ Chris Rupkey said the only consistent story on Friday was oil, which “means more or less that more inflation is on the way.” Markets expect no change at next week’s FOMC from the current 3.75% to 4.00% range but price a roughly 71% chance of a quarter-point hike in December, per CME FedWatch.
Flash PMI: U.S. economy “continues to boom,” prices charged jump — Kitco News
S&P Global’s October flash composite PMI eased to 57.6 from 58.4, but manufacturing rose to 56.0 (consensus 55.5, prior 55.9) and services held at 57.9 (prior 58.8, in line). Chris Williamson of S&P Global: “October’s flash PMI data indicate that the US economy continues to boom at the start of the fourth quarter. The output readings from the survey are consistent with GDP growing at a 5% annualized rate after a 4% expansion was signalled for the third quarter.” The University of Michigan’s final October consumer sentiment came in at 48, essentially flat on the month and above the 46.3 consensus, with expectations up 5.4% and current conditions down 8.3%. Neither print gives the Fed a reason to soften next week.
France is flashing euro crisis signals. This time, the fault lines are different — CNBC
The French 10-year yield broke above 5% this week for the first time since 2002, and the spread over Bunds passed 170 bp on Thursday for the first time since the early-2010s debt crisis. Moody’s rating review was due late Friday, France will deploy 70,000 police for Saturday’s protests, and per Reuters via CNBC the euro fell to its lowest against the yen since October 2025 while the yen headed for its best week since early September on safe-haven flows out of the AI trade.
American Express is cutting 5% of its workforce to ‘prepare for AI’ — CNBC
Amex is taking a $336 million restructuring charge to cut roughly 5% of its nearly 77,000 staff; CFO Christophe Le Caillec said the goal is to “reduce layers and increase spans of controls, so that we can automate and take advantage of AI.” Barclays confirmed a similar 5% cut on Thursday. The stock’s 3% drop was the biggest single weight on the Dow, and the pattern, strong profits plus AI-justified layoffs, is becoming the financial sector’s template. Separately, Sen. Susan Collins said the U.S. will exempt nine categories of Canadian imports from tariffs, and Trump signed an executive order on mortgage insurance and refinancing whose consumer impact is unclear without details.

Commodities & FX
| Asset | Price | Change | % Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold (Dec) | $4,009.60 | -$50.80 | -1.3% |
| WTI Oil (Dec, settle) | $103.27 | +$3.80 | +3.8% |
| Brent Oil (Dec, settle) | $116.72 | +$3.55 | +3.1% |
| EUR/USD | 1.1196 | -0.0014 | -0.1% |

| 10Y Yield | 5.00% | +0.05 | +5 bp |
| US Dollar (DXY) | 101.81 | +0.20 | +0.2% |
Oil settles are from CNBC and compare December to December. Gold is the December contract’s full-session bar; yesterday’s digest captured a pre-settle print, so Thursday’s reference close is $4,060.40, not $4,039.20. FX percentage changes are from Reuters’ session report (euro -0.12%, yen +0.18%, DXY +0.13%); yfinance’s FX daily bars were unusable today. Bitcoin was flat near $81,300. Gold holding $4,000 while the dollar and yields both rose is a better outcome than Thursday’s liquidation, but the PMI’s strength removes the recession bid.
Notable Voices
Meta shares are down 9% this week. Here’s why Mike Khouw is buying now — Mike Khouw, CNBC Pro (2026-10-23)
Khouw frames Meta’s $135 billion four-session loss against the Muse opportunity: at $120 a year reaching 1% of 3.6 billion daily actives that is $4.3 billion, and at half that price reaching 20% it is $43.2 billion. He lists the New Mexico penalty, the Zuckerberg tax deal and on- and off-balance-sheet AI debt as the real headwinds, but argues that at 20 times this year’s earnings and under 17 times 2027 “the company is now pricing a lot of that in,” and sells the December 580/745 strangle for about $21.30.
CrowdStrike CEO’s alarming prediction — plus, the sell-off spreads beyond tech — Jim Cramer’s Investing Club, CNBC (2026-10-23)
The Club’s Homestretch note reads the Dow’s 1%-plus drop as the week’s selling moving past the AI trade into the defensives that had been absorbing it, with cybersecurity and chip stocks the day’s bright spots keeping tech modestly green. The full note is behind the Club paywall; the headline and lead are all we can attribute.
Why investors are moving back into Treasurys — Byron Anderson, Laffer Tengler, via CNBC (2026-10-23)
Anderson doubts the Treasury rally lasts: “With a Federal Reserve that is focused on inflation and largely out of the bond market as a buyer, it is hard to see a sustained rally without the market narrative flipping to recession. We are far from the recession narrative, with two Fed rate hikes still built into expectations and a good economic backdrop.”
Market Outlook
Friday was the day the safety trade ran out of buyers: the Dow fell 653 points on staples, utilities, health care and an AI-justified layoff at American Express, while the Nasdaq barely moved and the chip stocks that were crushed on Thursday bounced. That is not a resolution of the AI financing question, which CoreWeave’s 1,129 bp CDS and Morgan Stanley’s target cut say is still open; it is a market with nowhere left to hide, and the one asset that did catch a bid, crude at $103 WTI and $116.72 Brent on Iran strike expectations, is itself an inflation problem. The macro tape leans hawkish: flash PMIs that S&P Global says are consistent with 5% annualized growth, the fastest price-charged readings since 2022, and a 71% December-hike probability mean the 10-year’s trip below 5% was a flight to safety, not a growth scare, and it reversed within a day. Our watchlist’s nuclear names printed new 52-week lows while Apple printed a new high and is about to pass Nvidia in market value, which is the whole rotation in one line. Next week is the test: UPS and SoFi on Monday, Alphabet and the FOMC decision on Wednesday, then Amazon, Intel and Strategy into Thursday’s first-look Q3 GDP and September PCE.
