Alphabet’s free-cash-flow miss set the tone. GOOG fell 12.3% in its worst day ever, erasing roughly $500 billion of market value. That pulled the Nasdaq down 1.38% and ended the S&P 500’s three-day winning streak, per CNBC’s live market blog. Caterpillar slid more than 9%, and ServiceNow fell 27% for its worst day on record. Underneath, money rotated rather than left. Seven of 11 sectors rose, led by real estate (+2.1%) and healthcare (+1.9%), and the Russell 2000 gained 1% for a third straight session. Communication services fell more than 6%. After the bell, Amazon and Intel both sold off on their reports (see Breaking News).
Breaking News & Macro Events
Q3 GDP grows a better-than-expected 3.4% as September inflation accelerates — CNBC
The economy grew at a 3.4% annualized pace in Q3, against a 3.1% estimate and 2.2% in Q2. Gross private domestic investment jumped 19.4%, led by a 20.9% surge in equipment spending, which is the AI build-out showing up in GDP. September PCE rose 0.5% on the month, the largest increase since March and in line with the Dow Jones consensus. That put headline inflation at 3.6% year on year. Core PCE was 0.3% and 3.1%, both in line. Energy drove the jump: gasoline and other energy goods rose 9.2% in the month. Nothing in the report argues against the December hike that markets priced after Wednesday’s hawkish hold.
Alphabet tanks nearly 13% for worst day ever, losing $500 billion in value — CNBC
The drop beat the previous record of 11.63%, set in March 2020. The trigger was -$9.07 billion of free cash flow against the -$2.7 billion analysts expected, with 2026 capex guidance held at $195–205 billion. Search advertising grew 12% to $63.35 billion but missed estimates. Google business chief Philipp Schindler said the “strong growth in AI mode queries had an impact because of the lower monetization we are seeing in AI mode,” per CNBC. Microsoft opened higher and then closed marginally lower (-0.2%). Both hyperscalers reported capex below estimates, and Microsoft CFO Amy Hood said delays from third-party AI capacity providers push some capacity into the first half of 2027. Neoclouds fell again: CoreWeave about 5% and Nebius more than 5%.
Amazon misses and holds capex steady; Intel plunges on weak guidance — CNBC
Amazon reported EPS of $1.89 against $1.96 expected and revenue of $201.94 billion against $202.31 billion, per LSEG. It held its 2026 capex forecast at $220 billion. AMZN had already fallen 4.3% in the session and printed $231.08 at 4:32 p.m. ET, another 5.2% lower. Intel beat on Q3, with adjusted EPS of 52 cents against 40 cents and revenue of $16.51 billion. But it guided Q4 below estimates on PC softness. CFO David Zinsner said, “We see the PC slowdown continuing at least through the first half of next year.” INTC printed $77.20 after hours, 16% below its $92.07 close.
ECB holds at 2.5% on the day Lagarde announces her early exit — CNBC
The deposit rate stayed at 2.5% after September’s hike, even though euro-zone inflation is at 3.8%, a three-year high. Money markets priced a 67% chance of a December hike. UBS’s Dean Turner called it “a hawkish pause rather than the end of the tightening cycle.” Lagarde, who announced earlier Thursday that she will step down Feb. 7, blamed rising long-end yields worldwide partly on “debt issuance by some of the hyperscalers.” EUR/USD rose 0.5%.
Oil edges lower as renewed U.S.-Iran peace efforts ease supply fears — CNBC
WTI settled down 78 cents at $102.00 and Brent down 44 cents at $114.88. The WSJ reported that Vice President JD Vance had reached out to Iranian Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei to restart talks. That came a day after reports that Washington told Gulf states to prepare for strikes after the midterms, so the oil premium is swinging on headlines in both directions.
DoorDash to acquire Instacart for $17 billion — CNBC
DoorDash will pay $65 a share in cash and stock, an 11% premium to Instacart’s Wednesday close. It also beat on Q3, with adjusted EPS of $1.06 against 84 cents. Wedbush analysts flagged possible antitrust scrutiny, and the deal adds pressure on Amazon’s grocery delivery push.

Oil rows are CNBC’s settles. CNBC’s Brent figure continues Wednesday’s $115.32 December settle. Yahoo’s January Brent (BZF27) closed at $111.62, flat on the day, so its continuous series (BZ=F) shows a fake 3.2% drop from the contract roll. Yields fell even as inflation accelerated: the 10-year slipped back under 5%, which fits a flight to bonds on a down day for tech. GLD fell 1.3%.
Notable Voices
Jim Cramer: Why investors are punishing Alphabet and giving Microsoft a pass — Jim Cramer, CNBC Investing Club (2026-10-29)
Cramer said the split comes down to financial discipline. He argued that Alphabet is selling its TPUs to outside customers while also renting compute from third parties, and that it has failed to properly monetize YouTube. “They got saved by the cloud,” he said. “This was a highly undisciplined call. I did not sense the kind of discipline that you got from Amy Hood.” He cautioned against giving up on Alphabet entirely; his charitable trust owns both stocks.
Steve Eisman gets more conservative with portfolio as AI trade nears ’tipping point’ — Steve Eisman, CNBC Squawk Box (2026-10-29)
The “Big Short” investor thinks the AI trade is near a “tipping point” but isn’t betting against it. “We have shorted against the box a whole bunch of our positions, so that our risk is much, much, much lower. But I’m not, like, net short any,” he said. He called parts of Anthropic’s recently filed S-1 “extremely negative” because it gave few forward metrics.
Rare Stanley Druckenmiller post sends crypto-linked stock surging — Stanley Druckenmiller, X via CNBC (2026-10-29)
Druckenmiller rarely posts on X. On Thursday he posted to announce his involvement with a new type of decentralized exchange, which moved shares of a leading crypto treasury company and its token. The post coincided with TradeXYZ, the main developer of perpetual futures on Hyperliquid, announcing a partnership with ICE to bring those perps onshore to U.S. investors. It’s not a market call, but it’s a notable endorsement of crypto derivatives from one of the most closely watched macro investors.
Market Outlook
Alphabet’s record 12.3% drop pulled the Nasdaq down 1.38%. The S&P 500 fell only 0.3% because seven of 11 sectors rose and the Russell 2000 gained 1%. That’s rotation, not panic. The market is now separating AI winners from AI spenders on free cash flow: Alphabet was hit for negative cash flow, Microsoft held near flat, and Amazon and Intel sold off after hours on a miss and weak guidance. The macro backdrop is not easing either. Q3 GDP grew 3.4% and September PCE ran at 3.6%, which keeps the December hike that markets expect firmly in play even as the 10-year eased back under 5%. Friday’s ECI and Amazon’s first full session after its report will show whether the selling stays with the hyperscalers or spreads further into AI hardware; SMCI and TSM already fell today, and that spread warrants attention.
