The AI trade cracked on the last day of October. Intel fell 28.6%, its worst day since the 1970s, and dragged chips with it: SOXX fell 9.1% and closed below its 200-day moving average for the first time since June 2025, per CNBC’s live market blog. The Nasdaq had its worst day since June and finished October down 5.3%, its steepest monthly fall since March 2025. Money moved into defensives rather than out of the market. Consumer staples (XLP) hit an all-time intraday high and health care (XLV) a 52-week high, which kept the Dow’s loss to 1.1%. Crypto took a second hit from the record Binance hack, and gold fell to its lowest level in almost a year.
Breaking News & Macro Events
Intel stock has worst day since 1970s — CNBC
Intel beat on Q3 but guided Q4 to 25 cents of adjusted EPS on $15–16 billion of revenue, against LSEG estimates of 43 cents and $17.1 billion. The guide includes about $600 million of lost revenue over two quarters from an explosion at its Israel fab that killed two workers. CFO David Zinsner said, “We see the PC slowdown continuing at least through the first half of next year.” Intel still has no external foundry customers. CEO Lip-Bu Tan said, “We’re going to have a couple of customers ready to announce the next two quarters.” Bank of America downgraded the stock to neutral from buy and cut its target to $100 from $145. UBS cut to $80 and Bernstein to $75. In our data back to 1980, this was INTC’s largest one-day drop, beating -26.1% on Aug. 2, 2024. Volume was 448 million shares, 3.3x Thursday’s.
Nasdaq suffers worst day since June as investors dump tech — CNBC
The selling spread well past Intel. AMD dropped close to 11%, Qualcomm 11%, Broadcom 5% and Nvidia 4%. Sandisk fell 13% despite a beat and an 8-for-1 split. Reddit, Roblox and Twilio fell 17–29% on weak guidance, per CNBC’s midday movers. The Financial Times reported that Blackstone told investors Anthropic’s post-IPO debt may get a “high” junk rating instead of investment grade. Amazon was the outlier: it opened down 4.6% after its miss and negative free cash flow of $42.4 billion, then recovered to close down only 1.4%. Morgan Stanley’s Brian Nowak called the AWS shortfall “mostly an expectations miss.” Globalt’s Keith Buchanan summed up the mood: “Last year was hope. This year is: At the end of day, how does this all work in real world terms, like how to finance [it] and who gets the economics.”
Binance’s $6.3 billion hack is the largest crypto theft on record — CNBC
Binance said a security incident affected about $6.3 billion in client assets, with roughly $3 billion frozen on-chain, and pledged to cover losses from its SAFU fund. TRM Labs and Chainalysis both pointed to North Korea-linked hackers. Circle said it froze more than $800 million of USDC tied to the incident, and Tether more than $1.5 billion of USDT. Bitcoin fell more than 4%, to about $77,190. That’s milder than the 8.3% average first-day drop after past exchange hacks, which CNBC puts down to the bitcoin network itself not being breached. The equity side was harsher: COIN fell 12.2%, CRCL 9.9% and MSTR 7.8%.
Fed officials are already saying they’ll need to get back to hiking rates — CNBC
Two days after the Fed held, St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem said, “I judge that additional firming of monetary policy will be necessary, and soon.” Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan went further: “the FOMC needs to implement at least two more 25-basis-point rate increases.” Musalem pointed to Thursday’s 3.4% GDP print and above-3% PCE inflation. Yields still fell: the 10-year eased 6 bp to 4.93%, and the 2-year dropped below its 50-day moving average. That’s a growth-scare bid for bonds, not a dovish repricing.
Tankers defy Iranian attacks to keep crude flowing through Hormuz — CNBC
More commercial ships have been attacked in October than at any other point in the Iran war, but a shuttle system has lifted Hormuz flows more than 70% since July, per Kpler. That safety comes at a cost: supertanker day rates jumped from $249,000 in early September to more than $900,000 by early October, or about $21 a barrel in freight. WTI rose 2% to $104.05 and is up roughly 15% in October. The expiring December Brent contract traded above $117, just shy of its $118.35 wartime closing high. Chevron and Exxon hit all-time highs as diesel prices lifted refining profits.
Gold and silver hit their lowest levels in almost a year — CNBC
December gold fell 3.5% to $3,889.50. At midday CNBC put the low at $3,946, the weakest since Nov. 5, 2025, and the afternoon pushed it further, to $3,879.30. GLD and IAU confirmed the move (-3.5% each), and GLD’s intraday low was its lowest since early October 2025. Gold didn’t act as a haven in this selloff. With two Fed presidents calling for more hikes and the dollar flat, it fell alongside tech and crypto, which fits a liquidation read better than a flight to safety. Tom Lee’s read of the day was “someone’s getting liquidated” (see Notable Voices).
Overseas: BoJ holds, euro zone slows
The Bank of Japan held at 1.25% in an 8-1 vote, and for the first time since adopting its 2% target in 2013 it called inflation “generally consistent” with it. All 16 economists in a CNBC survey expect it to set up a hike in December or January. Euro zone GDP slowed to 0.4% in Q3, beating the 0.2% forecast, while France unexpectedly contracted 0.1%. The Nikkei fell 2.1% and the Kospi 3.5%.

Notable Voices
Howard Marks: AI is the ’least predictable thing I’ve ever witnessed in my career’ — Howard Marks, CNBC The Exchange (2026-10-30)
On a day when the market sold AI hardest, Oaktree’s co-chairman told CNBC it is hard to judge the economic viability of the AI boom. In a second clip he argued “we shouldn’t take our signals from the market,” which is a caution against reading one ugly session as a verdict either way. We have the clip headlines only, not a transcript.
Fundstrat’s Tom Lee: Today looks like someone’s getting liquidated — Tom Lee, CNBC Power Lunch (2026-10-30)
Lee read the session as forced selling rather than a change in fundamentals. Tech, crypto and gold all fell together, which fits that read. We have the clip headline and description only, not a transcript.
Market Outlook
The AI selloff moved from the hyperscalers into the chips on Friday. Intel’s 28.6% collapse and a 9.1% drop in SOXX took the Nasdaq down 2.86%, capping a 5.3% October loss, while staples hit records and the Dow fell only 1.1%. The cross-asset picture looks more like de-risking than a growth panic: the 10-year eased to 4.93% and gold fell 3.5% on the same day two Fed presidents called for more hikes, so equities can’t count on a dovish Fed to cushion the fall. Next week brings Apple on Monday, the midterms plus Super Micro, AMD and Pfizer on Tuesday, and the October jobs report on Friday. With VIX back at 19.4 and BTIG flagging a test of the S&P 500’s 200-day average near 7,306, about 3.6% below Friday’s close, whether chips find a floor into Tuesday’s AI-hardware reports warrants attention.
