November opened with a rebound that didn’t hold. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were up as much as 1.1% and 1.4% early, then reversed to close lower as investors kept selling tech, per CNBC’s live market blog. The AI-financing worry came back through two deals. Marvell fell almost 13% and Lumentum 18% on Marvell’s $115 billion all-stock purchase of Lumentum, and Oracle fell 8.8% after filing to raise $20 billion. SOXX fell 3.8%. The Dow rose on old-economy names instead, led by Sherwin-Williams (almost +6%) and Home Depot (+3.6%). Oil fell more than 7% on U.S.-Iran peace-talk hopes. The rotation underneath is now a month old: the equal-weight S&P 500 rose 4.9% in October while the cap-weighted index fell 0.9%, its best relative month since April 2009, per Bespoke via CNBC.

Breaking News & Macro Events

Crude oil prices sell off more than 7% on Iran peace talk hopes — CNBC

WTI fell 7.4% to settle at $96.46, its biggest daily loss since July 27, and Brent lost 7.6% to $104.77. President Trump told reporters Iran wants to “make a deal and that could happen.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said over the weekend that Trump “hasn’t made a decision” on striking Iran again, adding, “But we would prefer to do it peacefully.” Iran’s foreign minister said a deal is possible if Washington “demonstrates goodwill.” He listed Tehran’s terms as lifting sanctions, cutting the U.S. regional military presence and ending the blockade. Oil had gained more than 10% in October, pricing in escalation after the midterms, and CNBC notes that past settlement rumors in this war have reversed. TD Securities’ Ryan McKay: “so long as there is no concrete conclusion to the war, and tanker and Houthi attacks remain prevalent, we do not anticipate a complete erosion of the risk premium via diplomacy headlines alone.” Energy majors took the hit: Exxon, Chevron and Valero fell 3% to 5%, per CNBC’s midday movers.

Oracle files to sell $20 billion in new stock and bonds — CNBC

Oracle will sell $10 billion of common stock and $10 billion of senior notes to fund its AI buildout. The raise was previewed at last week’s investor day, but the stock still fell 8.8%. “This seems to be exactly what they previewed,” said Baird’s Rob Oliver. “So I’m not sure why the market is freaking about it.” The credit market looks less relaxed. Oracle’s five-year CDS spread sits at 292, up 265% in a year, and its 2031 bond yields 7.276%, though it is still rated investment grade at BBB-. The shares are down 33% this year.

Marvell to buy Lumentum in a $115 billion AI-connectivity deal — CNBC

Lumentum holders get 4.5 Marvell shares per share, for about 33% of the combined company, and the deal is expected to close in the first half of 2028. Marvell expects more than $1 billion of annual cost synergies and an addressable market of $550 billion. Both stocks rose before the open and then fell hard. That fits a market that is now punishing AI capital commitments rather than rewarding them.

Anthropic’s amended S-1 shows $17 billion of Q3 revenue and $895.4 billion of commitments — CNBC

Third-quarter revenue rose about 1,127% year on year to roughly $17 billion. Sequential growth slowed to about 47%, from 144% in Q2. The net loss for the quarter was $23.29 billion. The number that matters for public AI stocks is the $895.4 billion of purchase commitments and leases, “substantially all of which is related to compute and infrastructure.” That is demand for hyperscalers and chipmakers, and it is also the financing chain the market is now questioning.

The midterms are here. How JPMorgan expects the market to react — CNBC

JPMorgan gives a 66% chance of a Democratic sweep of both chambers, with the S&P 500 seen moving between -0.25% and +0.5%. It gives 26% to a Democratic House with a GOP Senate (+0.5% to +1%) and 7% to a Republican hold (+1% to +1.25%). The firm says a blue wave could hit AI stocks on regulation fears, but expects bills limiting AI expansion to fail against a Trump veto, and recommends buying any tech dip. It also sees lower long-dated yields if Democrats control government finances.

Apple beats on revenue in John Ternus’ first report as CEO — CNBC

After the close, Apple reported fiscal Q4 revenue of $114.48 billion against LSEG’s $113.39 billion. iPhone revenue was $57.58 billion against $56.54 billion expected, and iPad sales fell short. The quarter includes only eight days of iPhone 18 Pro sales and none from the $2,000 iPhone Duo, which went on sale Oct. 23. The 5 p.m. call is Ternus’ first. The focus is memory-driven component costs and whether gross margin holds after a September quarter helped by tariff refunds. Apple and Nvidia ended the day neck and neck at about $4.91 trillion each. We have no reliable after-hours print yet.

Notable Voices

Still see markets ending the year strong — Tom Lee, CNBC Squawk Box (2026-11-02)

Lee still sees the S&P 500 topping 8,200 before year-end, about 8.7% above today’s close. “The markets are going to exit the year strong,” he said, arguing that “most of the market” has already corrected, per CNBC. His case rests on the equal-weight washout earlier in the year. It does not depend on the megacaps leading again.

Cramer on Apple and CrowdStrike — Jim Cramer, CNBC Investing Club (2026-11-02)

Going into Apple’s print, Cramer repeated “own it, don’t trade it” but declined to call the reaction: “Historically it would go down after this big run, but I don’t know when I could get back in.” On cybersecurity, after weak results from Check Point and Fortinet, he split the group into haves and have-nots: “CrowdStrike is a definite ‘have.’”

Market Outlook

An early rebound faded into a 1.07% Nasdaq loss as Oracle’s $20 billion raise and Marvell’s $115 billion Lumentum deal revived questions about how the AI buildout gets financed, while a 7% drop in oil helped lift the Dow 0.4%. This looks like a positioning shift more than a panic. Morgan Stanley’s prime brokerage shows global gross equity exposure down 8% from its peak, the biggest drawdown in at least a decade, and Convexitas’ Zed Francis calls it “a massive de-levering event,” per CNBC. That fits the equal-weight index beating the cap-weighted one by 5.8 points in October. The VIX still climbed to 21.15 on a modest 0.5% S&P 500 loss, which suggests hedging demand is picking up. Tonight’s reaction to Apple, Tuesday’s midterms alongside Super Micro, AMD and Pfizer, and Friday’s payrolls give the market three tests in four days, and whether the rotation keeps lifting the average stock without dragging the index lower warrants attention.
