Democrats swept the House, the Senate and the Texas governorship, and the market liked the outcome. The Dow jumped 1,569 points, its best day since April 9, 2025, and closed above 53,000 for the first time since Sept. 8, per CNBC’s live market blog. The VIX fell 20% to 16.61. Trump told the New York Times he was “absolutely willing” to accept the results, and futures rebounded on those headlines from overnight lows. Nasdaq-100 futures had touched their lowest level since July 30. Freedom Capital Markets’ Jay Woods said “there will be gridlock and historically this is good for the market.” Generali’s Thomas Hempell credited Trump’s acceptance of the results and his openness to working with Democrats with “hopes that contestation of the results and more adverse polarization can be avoided,” per CNBC’s rally explainer. The rally split the AI trade in two. Apple and the hyperscalers rose, while chips, neoclouds and data-center power names fell. SOXX lost 3.1% on a day the Dow gained 3%.

Breaking News & Macro Events

Every stock that moved because of the election — CNBC

The rotation was clean. Hospitals and insurers rallied on hopes that healthcare cuts slow and ACA subsidies are extended: Centene +12.6%, HCA +10.3% and Molina +8.9%. Clean energy rose, with NextEra up 4.9% and First Solar 4.6%. A consumer-relief trade lifted homebuilders, airlines, cruise lines and staples: Booking +9.8%, Dollar Tree +9.6% and D.R. Horton +8.1%. Consumer staples hit a record, per the live blog. Losers were defense (Lockheed -6.9%, Kratos -12.3%), the Musk complex (SpaceX -3.8%, Tesla -3.3%) and data-center infrastructure (Comfort Systems -15.1%, Vistra -13.8%, Micron -7%). Trump Media plunged 24.5% to a 52-week low. “Democratic control could slow the push for deregulation in financials, energy and digital assets,” Wells Fargo Investment Institute wrote.

Voters rebuff data centers in every ballot measure except one — CNBC

There were 41 local ballot measures in 10 states, and voters sided against data centers in 40 of them, per Ballotpedia and CNBC. In a CNBC Voter Poll, 56% of voters called data centers a crucial or major factor in their vote. The biggest result was in Texas, where Gina Hinojosa unseated Gov. Greg Abbott after pledging an immediate moratorium. Wells Fargo estimates the state holds 27% of planned U.S. data-center gigawatts, and its strategist Ohsung Kwon had called a Democratic win a potential “left-tail event to the AI trade,” per CNBC. Ohio’s governorship also flipped to Amy Acton, who backs a “conditional moratorium.” That puts OpenAI’s 8-gigawatt PORTS-Pike campus, which Nvidia is backstopping, in a newly hostile state. The market read the results as a tax on new entrants, not on incumbents. Needham’s Laura Martin wrote that “higher regulatory barriers entrench incumbents.” “Hyperscalers are AI incumbents.” CoreWeave fell about 10%, while Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet rallied, per CNBC.

Crude oil falls below $90 as Vance blames GOP election defeat on Iran war — CNBC

WTI settled down 8.3% at $88.12 and Brent fell 8.7% to $94.62. Oil is now down more than 14% this week. “The reason we lost is the war,” Vance posted. “The president himself said so last night.” Lipow Oil’s Andy Lipow said the market now concludes that “Trump might now be inclined to make a deal.” Some traders think the move went too far. CIBC’s Rebecca Babin called the sell-off “a bit overdone,” and Rapidan’s Bob McNally still sees the odds favoring escalation: “Iran is hardened in its uncompromising position.” Falling oil extended the equity rally through the afternoon, per the live blog.

Gold and silver jump, dollar dips as Democrats take Congress — CNBC

Gold futures settled up 3.4% at $4,073 and silver rose 5.1% to $52.28. The dollar index fell about 0.3%. Gold is still down more than 6% this year. The 10-year yield fell about 6 bp to 4.88%, and JPMorgan traders flagged “reduced deficit spending” as a post-midterm theme, per CNBC. The next fiscal fight cuts the other way. CNBC’s Matt Peterson argues that the debt limit, which the Treasury likely hits by midsummer, is the one must-pass bill that hands Democrats leverage. Because they hold it, any deal is “more likely to increase government spending than lower it.” “I don’t think they realize how aggressively Democrats plan to take 2027,” said Jefferies’ Aniket Shah.

Notable Voices

Fundstrat’s Tom Lee: Many reasons why a blue wave is positive for stocks — Tom Lee, CNBC Closing Bell (2026-11-04)

Lee came on Closing Bell to discuss the market’s reaction to the midterms. The clip’s title states his view that a blue wave is positive for stocks. CNBC published only that one-line summary with the video, so this entry claims no more than the title does.

AI data center stocks decline as Texas governor result raises risks of a slowdown — Dan Ives, Yorkville Ives & Co., via CNBC (2026-11-04)

Ives wrote that the midterms will slow the pace of U.S. data-center buildouts: “There is no way to sugarcoat that Democrats taking control especially over the Senate will create some major hurdles for AI and tech legislation in the Beltway over the next 2 years.” He called Texas the “biggest worry” of the night for the AI trade, because roughly 25%–30% of data-center gigawatts and capacity will come from there.

Jim Cramer says this bank stock is a buy after its post-election pullback — Jim Cramer, CNBC Investing Club (2026-11-04)

Per the Club’s recap, Cramer framed a slower data-center build as terrible for the neoclouds but potentially good for the hyperscalers, which would be forced to let cash flow catch up with capex. He also called Capital One’s nearly 3% drop on rate-cap fears an opportunity: “I’m not saying go in right now. I am saying that COF is to be bought if you don’t own any.” He dismissed the cap’s odds of becoming law, since past attempts went nowhere.

Market Outlook

A decisive Democratic sweep and Trump’s quick acceptance of it turned a feared left-tail event into a relief rally. The Dow rose 3.03% and the VIX fell 20% to 16.61, and an 8% drop in crude to $88 added fuel. Under the headline, the market is re-pricing the AI trade rather than abandoning it. Apple closed at a record and Amazon rose 6% as investors bet that slower data-center construction rewards cash-rich incumbents. Nvidia, SOXX, Super Micro and the nuclear names fell 3–6%, and Oklo and NuScale hit new lows. Falling oil, lower yields (10-year at 4.89%) and a softer dollar make a friendlier macro backdrop. ISM services prices at 73.0 and a looming debt-limit fight say the inflation and fiscal risks have been deferred, not resolved. Friday’s payrolls (consensus +59,000) and the Nov. 10 CPI will test whether this rally can last, and Nvidia’s Nov. 17 report now warrants attention as the first hard read on how much the election changes AI demand.
